An Excellent High Spec HD
« on: January 09, 2010, 00:42 »
The Western Digital high-end 'Caviar Black' range of hard drives have excellent specs, a 5-year warranty and are very desirable indeed.

Right now Novatech are doing this 1TB beauty for a mere £74.99, which is little more than the price of an economy HD.  Delivery is free if you opt for the 3-4 day service that seldom takes more than a couple of days.

Fill yer boots.  I did - twice!   :)

The only thing that worries me slightly with large hard drives is, it's a hell of a lot of data to lose if the drive fails.

In just a couple of years time 1TB will be considered a piffling amount of space, Simon.  Why not buy two, then clone the boot drive.  RAID1 also represents a good belt-and-braces method of keeping your bits intact.  Above all, backup regularly!

I've never really embraced the regimental backups mindset.  Yeah, I have My Documents on a separate partition, and have this also backed up on a separate drive, but I only update it when I think about it, probably once every three months or so.  I know one or two people who shudder at the thought of missing an hourly backup!  ;D

backup backup backup. Though I tend to once a day for work and once a week for home.

I'm a bit concerned about the 1TB drives, I've seen quite a few crap out.

Yeah, the five year warranty doesn't cover the data.

They're here!

Ordered on Saturday, delivered Tuesday a.m.  Not bad for free P&P, eh?  This evening will therefore be spent using Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2009 Suite to clone my bits.  Whereupon, I shall become the gloatiest gloater this side of Gloatsville.

Note that I've already been using two WD 1TB 'Green' drives for well over a year without any kind of data loss.  Those will now go into an external enclosure linked to the WD Media Player and serve films I can never get to watch because there's invariably some interminable bleedin' soap on the box.

Stay chooned...

You can never have too many bits, Rik.
