Has anyone heard of a credit card into which you can pay money upfront?  It's not actually a credit card because you can only spend up to the amount you have paid in.  I quite like the idea of taking such a card abroad on holiday because it wouldn't be so much of a worry should it get stolen. 

the post office offer cards like that.

There are quite a few of the pre-paid visa cards around the place. I'm sure you'll be able to find one. Here I can walk into a supermarket and buy one.
