Netbook
« on: June 18, 2011, 16:28 »
I'm looking for a cheap netbook, just to access the internet when on holiday.  What do you think of this one and also, what is Windows 7 starter?  :dunno:

It looks like a fairly standard spec machine, probably from a Taiwanese or Chinese factory with a badge on it, Clive. Windows 7 Starter is the 'lightest weight' version of Win 7, designed for these relatively low-powered machines. I use a Samsung netbook and have been very pleased with it. I wouldn't want to spend the day on it, but it's ideal for a quick browse or to check emails, even write the odd letter.

If you can, upgrade the RAM from the standard 1GB to 2GB, it's generally a doddle to do, not expensive, and makes a world of difference to performance. When you do anything processor and IO intensive, eg Windows updates, make sure you're running on the mains.

I bought myself an Acer Aspire one 10" (second hand) and installed Win7 home on it  a previously installed xp was so old fashioned  ::)

Added some extra ram 2gb and it is rather a pokey little thing, trouble is ..now I don't use it because of the Galaxy s2 phone which does everything the laptop does.

I've ordered it with a case (£5) and the 2Gb RAM which cost £17.60.  I hope it's easy to change the RAM.     Will I have to buy an angle grinder to open it up?

Usually, there's a small flap held by a single screw on the underside, Clive.

No, it's more a 'plug in' than a 'rest in' if you know what I mean, but you'll see when you open the flap.

It turned up today along with the RAM module.  It was very easy to swap but I'm glad I looked at a youtube clip before installing it.  Windows starter is surprisingly good and contains all I need.  It has a webcam and microphone so I can use Skype.  I comes with 2 months free Nortons which I will get rid of ASAP.  Only problem is that Windows update doesn't work and throws up an error code 8024402F. Am I bothered?  Not really, the machine will only be used for e-mailing so I'm certain it will be fine.

The error might disappear after a reboot.  Glad to hear it looks OK.  :)
