When I bought my DVD recorder I purchased a quantity of Arista 2X DVD-RW's. Whilst I have not experienced any problems with the vast majority of the discs, several of them have refused to initialize on the first attempt. They have always "given in" eventually but there have been problems when playing those particular ones back. The first half of the DVD is fine, but the second half keeps freezing up, making the recording unwatchable. Are there different quality DVD RW discs available as I am beginning to think that I have bought cheap and nasty ones.

Always hit and miss Clive on some cheap disks, have found a very good site for Disks below ;)
Disks R Us (http://www.ukdvdr.co.uk/acatalog/index.html)

You do seem to get what you pay for Clive :(
-
Thanks Hook, I'll order a pack of the Datasafe ones as they are the most expensive on that site.
-
Clive, try CDR Media (http://www.cd-rmedia.co.uk/index.mhtml). I have been using TDK RWs without any problems, but you do have to make sure the discs are spotlessly clean, or you may get write errors, regardless of which brand you use.
On the subject of discs, my PC DVD Writer doesn't like Datawrite discs, but the Zero Defex discs from CDR Media have performed perfectly every time.

It's a real minefield out there isn't it? At least TDK is a name I'm familiar with. ;D
-
That site is also the cheapest I've found, Clive. :)

:aarrgh: I don't like that word "cheap" Simon! I've found that polishing a rogue DVD with a "Selvyt" lens cleaning cloth can sometimes get it to play, but I don't remember having to do that with my VCR tapes. ;D
-
I've ordered from them three times, Clive. Trust me, they are good. ;)
If a DVD hasn't recorded properly, no amount of cleaning will get it to play. :(

Give www.ukdvdr.co.uk a try. I have been using them for about 2 years now and have nothing but fantastic service from them.
They will respond to complaints very quickly and profesionally.
Ya, cheap RW will give odd results, I personally use Datasafe and Datawrite and out of nearly 300 R and 50 odd RW have only 1 RW that missed behaved.
Had a couple of coaster using R media, but it's been my fault most of the time.
Let me know how you get on.
What make and mod of player do you use?
Cheers

Have posted some ideas to the first link you gave. The second one I will have to ponder for a while, but I think some of the replies regarding UDF and FAT32 partition may be on the right track.

Thanks digitalfife,
The second which you've not answered yet is mine.
I'm waiting with impatience.
Thanks in advance....

Well, going back to my post in this thread nearly a year ago, I recommended TDK -RWs from CDR Media (http://www.cd-rmedia.co.uk/index.mhtml). I am still using the same disks nearly 12 months on, and have re-recorded on them hundereds of times, without a single glitch, which wasn't my own fault, so again I can highly recommend TDK.
