Thirty per cent of mobile phone owners, about 19 million Britons, are unable to remember any mobile phone numbers, including their own, according to research.
According to 118 800, a newly launched directory enquiry service for mobile phone numbers, out of the 45 million mobile phone owners in the UK 82 per cent are only able to recall three numbers.
A partner's or parent's number is most likely to be recalled, followed by the number of a best friend (17 per cent) and a child's number (11 per cent).
The failure to recall mobile phone numbers is further compounded by the failure to back up contacts and numbers; 70 per cent of people do not store their address books either on a separate SIM card or on an online storage service.
118 800 lists millions of mobile phone numbers, however it does not give them out directly.
Instead, when a mobile phone number is requested, 118 800 will phone or text the person you are seeking and notify them. It is then their choice whether to get in touch with the requester.
The service has attracted criticism from privacy campaigners as it is an opt-out rather than opt-in service.
You can opt out of 118 800's directory on the company's website.
Simply enter your number and a 'captcha' code, and you will be sent a five-digit number via text message. Enter this number on the site and you will be taken out of the directory.

I haven't a clue what mine is without checking.
-
Has anyone tried entering the 'captcha' code to de-register? I had 8 attempts before getting it right. They certainly don't make it easy, and you shouldn't have to opt out anyway, as the option should have been to opt in. >:(
I know my number, because I've had the same one for about 12 years. :)
-
And I've waited 5 minutes, and still no 5 digit code by text. What a bunch of cowboys! :grrr:
-
It's illogical to expect people to know their own phone number. How often do you phone yourself?
-
;D
-
Only when I need company. :)x
-
... hmm mine definitely starts with an 07...
-
I have no idea what my number is ???
-
I always get flummoxed when my call is met by an answerphone with a message to 'leave your name and telephone number after the tone'. At least I can remember by own name, but trying to recall the phone number turns me into a stuttering wreck. Strange.
-
I used to have it stuck on the back of the phone with Dymo tape. :)
-
Dymo tape? How '80's. ;D
-
I used to love Dymo, and had everything in the house labelled! :)x
-
Yes, me too!
-
My parents got me a Dymo labeller one Christmas, then refused to let me use it because the replacement tape was so expensive. They wouldn't even let me use the tape supplied with the labeller "in case I needed it".

Ah, the logic of good parenting! ;D
-
That was just one example of many...
"If you use those paints, you won't have any more"
"I'm not baking any more cakes. You'll only eat them"
"No, you can't go swimming. Your costume's still wet from last night"
::)

If you dont stop crying I will give you such a whack ;D
-
Do you want a smack? Err... not really, but thanks anyway. :)x
Come here, and I'll give you something to cry about!
Wait till your father gets home!
Don't come running to me if you fall and break your leg!!
;D
