Perhaps it just affects ME, Sandra?  Mine has been updated too, with no side effects.

Good point Joudi, it could possibly be a problem with that particular USB port as USB ADSL modems draw close to the maximum power available at a port.

Tony, I dont think that Lona will ever trust you again after you reccommended a no smoking hotel for her in your area  :o

Anyway that said, because I have a helpful disposition and I cannot help myself ::) Look at this link, it is the end page of a five page thread on the issue.

PS. OF course I did recommend to Lona an ISP with a helpfull support team    :-X

Tony  "You've got mail"  :-*

Ok read that thread and how do I check to see if it's a USB problem?

You could start by plugging your modem into a different USB port, Lona.  It might need to re-install, in which case you may need your modem installation CD.

You got mail Lona  :-*

Just plugging it into another port, and your PC will auto recognise it, no need to reinstall the drivers. If that does not cure it, and considering every option had been tried in that 5 page support forum exersize I linked too, I personally would get BT out to it.

Problem solved folks. It was Norton Firewall that was the culprit. I uninstalled it and re-installed it and everything worked again. Don't ask me why cause I am not techie minded. It was just trial and error but got there in the end. Thanks for all everybodys help. :D

Glad it sorted at last Lona.

I've told you earlier that I don't like the firewalls.   :)

But it's still better to have one than not.   ;)

Hi
Read your problem which solved mine, except that Norton live update has downloaded the same file which caused the problem in the first place. This time around it was no internet access at at all, just blank pages as if you are offline. I think the file
name is something to do with a redirection. Does anyone know the
correct mail address for Symantec to send a complaint to.
Also I have noted that my Norton anti virus programme shows
no virus defintions. I still have a few months of the update subscription to go, should I go elseware for my anti virus and firewall software, is the Panda product any good? Norton have
a major problem with an update that screws up windows ME users.

Hi JK

I found that it was mainly the firewall that caused the problem. I have uninstalled the firewall and installed zonealarm and things are back to normal. Norton antivirus is still installed with updates and working fine for now. If I find it acting up again I will let you know.

You have a couple of PMs, JK, but as Lona suggested, one solution might be to use a different firewall.  A lot of people like Zone Alarm, but personally, I prefer Sygate, which you can get from the link below.

Let me know if you can't get your subscriptions back for the anti-virus, and I'll try to help.

Hi Lona and Simon
Thank you both for your very kind comments.
I think this problem is a very major one as I looked at other IT
help sites inculding one for so called PC and IT experts.
Exactly the same problem, except they have not found the answer yet. Could not answer them as I would have to log on as a PC professional, which I am not. Simon the anti virus problem
occured after my last removal and reload of Norton firewall.
The part on the Norton program showing the date of the last
update instead now shows no virus definitions.
It looks likes Lona no longer uses Norton firewall is that correct? That may be why she has not had the problem come back again. Can you use another firewall with Norton anti virus?
Did try another one once Tiny, if think, did not work had to be removed. Then again why should we all change as Norton has a problem with an upgade file?
