God I hope so. Since I've had BB in work, ISDN seems soooo slow :(

I read that BT are going to offer a 128K ISDN wholesale package to everybody.  The only problem is that it will be charged at BB rates.

And what a complete waste of time BT Midband is going to be :(

128K access for the same price as Broadband. Always on - at 2400bps >:( and capped bandwidth.

I think I'll stay with ISDN thanks ::)

More Midband details here.

BT expands broadband-trigger scheme
13:42 Monday 31st March 2003
Graeme Wearden

Good news for more than one hundred areas trapped on the wrong side of Britain's broadband divide as BT's latest ADSL triggers are set lower than expected.

BT announced details of a further swathe of broadband trigger levels on Monday, giving hope to 102 communities that currently aren't served by its ADSL network.

These trigger levels are a measure of how many area residents need to register an interest in broadband before BT will upgrade the local exchange. Over half of the triggers are between 300 and 400 registrations, lower than generally expected, and just one local exchange -- Hollinswood in Shropshire -- was unlucky enough to receive a trigger of 750.

BT had not set trigger levels for these 102 exchanges earlier because it either hadn't completed calculating the cost of installing ADSL, or had carried out an assessment and decided that the cost would be too great to make it financially viable.

The list includes Essex's Chafford Hundred, which had achieved nearly 500 registrations despite not having been set a trigger level at all. Having been given a trigger level of 450, Chafford has now passed the test and been added to BT's ADSL rollout programme.

A BT spokesman explained that as some of the costs associated with upgrading to ADSL are falling, exchanges that once were uneconomic to upgrade are now becoming more viable.

The total cost of upgrading an exchange is still formidable, and according to BT it will range from £200,000 to £500,000 for each of the 102 exchanges on the list.

Some BT critics have claimed that its trigger levels are simply too high and don't accurately represent the raw cost of upgrading an exchange, but the telco is keen to sink these suggestions -- including one argument that just 50 broadband users are needed per exchange.

"If their numbers added up then we'd have done it (upgraded more exchanges)," insisted the BT Wholesale spokesman. He also pointed out that local-loop unbundling means that any company can install ADSL kit in an exchange and offer broadband services.

The primary cost is usually the expense of installing the bandwidth needed to connect the exchange to BT's main network and the Internet.

"Backhaul is the pretty much always the largest single cost of upgrading an exchange. In addition, there is the cost of the DSL kit, and the expense of accommodation and infrastructure -- building new rooms where required and installing air conditioning and cooling systems," the spokesman explained.

Well, it's got to happen hasn't it?  To have a PC still on 56K in a few years will be like having a black and white TV, or a Betamax video.

Even if BT don't get their act together, someone's bound to come with an alternative, so that even people in the most remote areas can get broadband.

And then perhaps even in Carmarthenshire, Sean!   ;) ;D ;D
Many thanks to all our members, who have made PC Pals such an outstanding success!   :thumb:

Oh it's in Carmarthenshire Simon, just not my particular bit :(

Just checked www.bt.com/broadband and my exchange is on 154/300 - over half way there :)

BT enlists broadband supporters with 'campaign in a box'
11:07 Tuesday 15th April 2003
Graeme Wearden

An online toolkit will let activists order leaflets and posters, and gives advice on how to drive local interest in broadband
BT is giving a boost to local groups who are campaigning for broadband by giving them advice and practical assistance on how to persuade more of their neighbours to sign up for ADSL.

The telco announced on Tuesday that it has developed an online toolkit that aims to help broadband campaigners to drive awareness and interest in high-speed Internet services.

Described as a "campaign in a box" Web site, www.bt.com/broadband now lets people order promotional leaflets and posters. It also allows potential campaigners to check whether there is already any promotional activity already running in their area, and gives advice on how to get a campaign up and running.

BT's ADSL network currently reaches around two-thirds of the UK population, covering the local exchanges that were commercially viable to upgrade.

For many of the remaining exchanges trapped on the wrong side of the broadband divide, BT has calculated the number of people that would need to pay for broadband to make an upgrade financially viable.

These trigger levels typically vary from 200 to 750 registrations, and hundreds of campaign groups have already sprung up as broadband-hungry people try to hit their local exchange's trigger level.

BT hopes that its new campaign toolkit will help grassroots activists to increase interest in broadband -- which will then allow the telco to cost-effectively roll out ADSL in more parts of the UK.

"The key to successful local broadband awareness campaigns has been the energy and drive of the individuals who can see what broadband will mean for them and their communities," said Philippa Winterburn, BT Wholesale's head of broadband marketing, in a statement.

"Their enthusiasm is infectious and highly effective at a local level. This Web site provides them with an online 'campaign in a box' toolkit to build a strong campaign, which will help speed up the arrival of broadband in their area," Winterburn added.

BT's broadband site is already attracting interest. In March the site was visited by 233,000 unique users and delivered over 46 million page impressions, BT said.

BT also announced on Tuesday that it is setting another 200 trigger levels. Two of these exchanges -- Shillington in Hertfordshire and Limpley Stoke near Bath -- will immediately be added to BT's ADSL rollout programme as enough local people have already registered their interest.

Details of these 200 trigger levels should be available on the BT broadband site from Tuesday.

Several other Web sites also help broadband campaigners to hit their trigger levels, including www.wewantbroadband.co.uk, which is run by Eclipse Internet. It contains details about the availability of ADSL, SDSL, satellite and wireless broadband.
