Paul Scofield Dies

(1/3) > >>

David:
It was reported today that one of our finest actors has died today aged 86,its only my opinion but he was one of this country's finest actors,I had the great pleasure of meeting him one night on the last train home to Brighton many years ago,He struck up a conversation and I chatted away, knowing who he was but not acknowledging that I was aware,on our journey we just passed the time by idle chatter,if my memory serves me correctly at the time he was in a man for all seasons and I was reading a book on Thomas Moore  what struck me about him was how unaffected he was, didnt act the big star or anything like that,he came across as just a kind and very amiable man.

About 6 months later I got a job as a milkman and who was one of my customers in the Sussex area yes the same man,and although I never knew him personally he left a genuine impression on me and his passing will leave a gap never to be filled again, both as an actor and a fine human being

Lona:
What a great actor he was.  I saw him in A man for all Seasons also, and thought he should have got an oscar for his role.  Perhaps he did.

David:
Yes Lon he was awarded an Oscar for this portrayal,as I say we are better for having had his like and the worse for losing such a man

Simon:
He's been all over the local radio today.  Apparently, he turned down a CBE.  Twice!  Preferred to remain a man of the people.  He came from Hurstpierpoint, which is in my neck of the woods.  I have to be honest, though, I wouldn't have recognised him if I'd met him.

David:
I'm not one who lauds people because they die Simon he was just so down to earth, this was my neck of the woods for many years too.I l;lived in a small village called Ardingly near Hayward's Heath is Sussex and without giving away the location if you know this part of the world it was around 3 miles away on the road to EG

Had the pleasure of his terrier nipping me,and I was just his milkman but I have met many from the theater and TV and he was just himself and in my opinion (for what its worth) I think he had no time for all the showbiz stuff he was just expert at his craft.

I don't profess to know that much about the theater,in fact only ever been once but do know a good man when I meet one.

sad day for his family and all his friends wish some of todays  so called stars would take a leaf out of his book,
