Scientific Picture of the Week

The International Space Station Transits the Sun

The Sun is an awesome sight. Especially when you use the right equipment to look at it in detail (remember good old sun safety and never look directly at the Sun, unless you have very specialised equipment). When I want to look at the Sun I normally get out my trust binoculars and project the image onto a piece of card. You will be very surprised what you can see that way. You can see sunspots quite nicely, however, at the the moment we are going through a bit of a low period. In this case we have something completely different transiting in front of the solar disk - the International Space Station. Transiting the Sun is not very unusual for the ISS, which orbits the Earth about every 90 minutes, but it does on occasion.

Love the space pics, but that first one?  Come on, it's just a ping pong ball, surely?  ;D

The first one is ET cycling off into the sunset.
There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is readily adopted.

   I was wondering what that was, as it didn't come off when I cleaned my monitor.
