It wasn't a card for me, it was a set of 'cheques' which you placed in a drawer in the machine. It then read the cheque and, if all was well, handed you a tenner in return.

Simon:
I had a card, and with each use, the machine punched a little 'dot' in the card.  When you reached so many dots, the card was retained.

Rik:
Obviously later technology. :)

Oh yes, very advanced.  ;D

Yet amazing at the time.
