A clever virus
« on: July 23, 2010, 18:28 »
Hello all,

I require your help. I assume I have a virus but it eluding all of my attempts to remove it. The symptoms are as follow:

1. Services such as 'windows audio', 'DHCP client' and 'wireless zero config' fail to start despite being on 'automatic'.  They will however start manually.
2. Google on IE, firefox and opera all redirect to random sites; some well-known others malicious.
3. Windows appearance settings, although set to standard, sometimes display properly but sometimes do not. If you go in and re-apply the settings they work fine. Not sure if this one is related to point 1.

My initial thought was the google redirect virus but the online removal guides do not help as the (and I forget the name specifically) TD*.sys doesn't exist in my device manager even with the hidden items shown.

I have scanned the system with NAV, AVG, Spyhunter, Avast and Super Antispyware.  Although they all found bits and pieces none of them cured the problem.

Your help is appreciated.

Might be worth running HijackThis as well.

Wow, that was difficult. One line of the report kept making the connection to pc-pals timeout. I assume some form of firewall was triggered.  I have put the line below and inserted @ signs randomly. Hopefully it will get through (there were not @ signs in the line to start with).

I'm no expert on these, but I can't see anything glaringly obvious.  I do note, however, that AVG, Avast, and Norton, as well as Spyware Hunter, all appear in the results.  Do you have all of these installed and running?  It's not a good idea to have too many security, particularly anti-virus programs running at once, as they can conflict with each other.

I believe you can upload the HijackThis file to the TrendMicro site for analysis.  That might be worth a go, but if none of the spyware removers you have tried have found anything (even in safe mode?), I'm wondering if the simplest solution might be to backup your data, format, and do a fresh installation of Windows, then at least you will know that your system is clean.

They are running in unison, yes.

Unfortunately I have reached the same conclusion with regards a fresh install. It's just the potch of it all that has made me persevere for the last couple of months.  I will upload the file to the forum and see what comes out, but like you, I can see nothing obviously wrong.
