Suffolk's remaining Non League side in this years FA Cup will be in tomorrow's televised First Round draw after holding Blue Square South Dartford to a stalemate at Victory Road. There was little to seperate the two sides and they must now do it all again on Tuesday at Princes Park. Leiston were without the injured Shane Wardley, suspended Angelo Harrop and cup tied Luke Hammond but had Matt Stace on the bench following his return from Brantham Athletic.

The visitors started strongly with the stiff breeze on their backs with the home side a little tentative in their play. Dartford, three Leagues higher up the pyramid, bossed the opening quarter and Charlie Sheringham appealed for a twelfth minute penalty following David Head's challenge but Referee Porter was unimpressed. Three minutes later home custodian Jamie Stannard made a fine stop to deny Charlie Sheringham (under the watchful eye of his Dad Teddy in the stand) after Ollie Berquez had flicked on John Whitehouses goal kick with Charlie Sheringham getting goal side of the home defence but Jamie Stannard was equal to his effort. Leiston were defending stoutly and Mark Goldfinch did well to deny Lee Burns a shot at goal while Gareth Heath blocked Charlie Sheringham's goalbound strike inside the box. Leiston finally gained a foothold into the game and Michael Brothers tormented Tom Bonner before forcing John Whitehouse into a low save to his right. Danny Cunningham's attempted lob was held by John Whitehouse under his bar and on the stroke of half time the home side created their best chance. Leon Ottley-Gooch's left wing cross was not dealt with by Paul Goodacre but Danny Cunningham's well controlled volley was straight at John Whitehouse.

With the wind on their backs Leiston gained the upper hand in the second half. Michael Brothers fine diagonal pass released Leon Ottley-Gooch but his first touch was heavy inside the box and John Whitehouse was grateful to gather. Leiston's approach play belittled their League status offering more creativity against Dartford's direct style. With the game entering the final twenty minutes, Dartford made a trio of substitutions in an attempt to win the tie. On 70 minutes Lee Burns cut in from the right and forced Jamie Stannard into conceding a corner while moments later the home side missed their best chance of the game. Gareth Heath went marauding from his own half and with the visiting defenders retreating, supplied Danny Smy with the perfect pass. The Leiston striker managed to beat the onrushing John Whitehouse but then watched agonisingly as his shot rolled the wrong side of the visitors right hand post. As the game closed Substitute Carl Rook tested Jamie Stannard while Michael Brothers blazed over further good work by Gareth Heath. In the end a draw was the right result.

Leiston deservedly take their place in tomorrow's televised First Round draw and will give Dartford a stiff challenge in Tuesday's replay. As the game progressed it became clear that a single goal would be enough but neither side could muster it. You couldn't see three League's between the sides which was to Leiston's credit.

Leiston: Stannard, Saker, Boardley, D Head, Goldfinch, S Head, Cunningham (Calver 82 mins), Heath, Smy, Ottley-Gooch, Brothers. Subs not used: Norfolk, Stace, Kerslake and Block.

Dartford: Whitehouse, Burgess, Bonner, Champion, Goodacre, White (Harris 65 mins), Noble, Berquez (Haynes 69 mins), Sheringham (Rook 67 mins), Burns, Bradbrook. Subs not used: Shinn, Bruce, Burchell and Young.

Winning the league is more important at our level.  I know the prize money is useful, but getting up the leagues has got to come first.  Let's face it, Leiston were never going to win the FA Cup,  but they progressed through the stages and picked up a nice packet.

Well done for getting so far, Leiston.
