Liverpool FC confirmed this afternoon that Newcastle United had accepted a Club record offer for the transfer of Andy Carroll.

The Club have been given permission by Newcastle to discuss personal terms with the player, who will now travel to Liverpool for a medical.

There's too much money in football for its own good, Sam. If the financial hard times hit sponsorship, they will struggle to pay the wages bill.

It's rather obscene that so much money can be thrown around in football, when the disabled, among others, are facing financial cutbacks.

oh indeed! salary caps are the way forward.

Torres is supposed to be leaving liverpool for 50m....

Oh and the budget deficit that UK physics had was 80m...

Distorted priorities, eh Sam. The problem with the salary cap is, of course, that unless it's internationally agreed, you end up losing the best players to overseas sides. It's an issue which is really impacting rugby teams at the moment, we have a salary cap, the French do not.

oh indeed, but does that really matter in some respects? though i guess it changes European competition but not at home. Anyway, UEFA are taking steps to try and make things more even.
