Hi Clive, yes I know I should do it. Tomoorow sounds like a good idea as zi'm off to bed.

Just got another email from Michael, he's in Kreta and then heading back to Amsterdam. The UK on the 1st July.

I know that you should change the password on your modem to stop people hacking it, but is that really important?

It's important, but only to protect your network. It sounds like you interrupted a major update and left Windows in limbo, Kate, but it's hard to say without more information. rstrui.exe is the system restore executable, so that appears to have been busy trying to put things right.

The problem with me supplying information Rik, is that I don't know what the hell is happening.  :stars:

I have had some problems in the past with slow loading of pages, and when I accessed the modem and disconnected the wifi, it improved.
What that means, I have no idea.

I did ask Michael if our internet could be compromised, and he said that as long as the public wifi was disconnected we should be fine.

I only turned the wifi on, so I could use the laptop in bed.

I tried changing the password on the router this afternoon, and managed to stuff that up as well. Now when I try to access it, it won't accept the default one, and the new one gets an error message. 401 unauthorized.  :dunno:

Thanks TR, I'm assuming that means restarting it.

I think Terry meant a hard reset (pin in the back), which would also wipe out the ISP login and wireless settings, wouldn't it?

Oh, damn it Simon. Now you really are asking too much.

I have voip settings through this as well, and without Michael here to crawl under the computer desk and redo all of this, bugger!

Can you please explain in basic english what I need to do, without the possibility of me really f*cking it up.

What router do you have, Kate, and can you access it at all?

Dynalink RTA1046VW

And no it's locked me out as the default doesn't work anymore and the new password gives me the sh*ts, sorry, give me an error message of 401 unauthorized.

This is on a network, being Michael's computer and my PC, which is still not functioning, and this laptop.

It's not a model I know. Do you know your ISP login details, usually username and password?

Yes, I have the ISP details. Why does that have anything to do with it. Sorry, I have no idea what has to do with what.
I think that is obvious though.

If you reset the router, Kate, you'll need to re-enter the ISP details, also the modulation information, though hopefully the router would auto-detect them.

Is there a small hole on the rear to do a hard reset do you know?
