External Hard Drive?

(1/3) > >>

Den:
Any thoughts on the best external hard drive to buy? I have a WD 1tB hard drive but would like a 3 0r 4tB one. I have looked on line and Samsung or WD seem the most popular  but the prices seem a long way apart. I will most likely use a USB 3 and plug it into my desktop. The other thought is a Ethernet one but all 4 ports are in use on my BT Homehub 5. Will a port extender work for that?

Simon:
Not had it long, but I've just bought one of these for backups:

Den:
I bought a WD MyCloud but for some reason I can't get my head around it. Has anyone any experience with one of these as I feel so stupid at the moment.

Simon:
I looked at them before I bought the one I did, but I couldn't fathom them out either, Den.  I'm sure it's probably fairly straightforward once you get to grips with it, but I've never used all this 'Cloud' malarkey, and don't intend to start if I can help it.

I tend to find WD are the most reliable tho' a bit more expensive. I also use seagate which are also OK but i've had one (internal) seagate fail on me in the past.
Never had a Samsung so can't comment on them. I reckon if the stuff is important use WD, if less important use Seagate to get a bit more TB for your money.
I don't get the cloud malarkey either, but it's bound to be slow and perhaps an extra charge somewhere along the line.
You can get 8 TB drives now for around £200 or less, but it's an awful lot to lose if it goes t1ts up  :bawl:
