sat infront of the biggest bag of sh...
« on: June 16, 2003, 20:21 »
Hi playmates,

I'm spending a few days at a friends house up in the Northen lakes near Ullswater. Anyway they have a Patriot PC with a Cyrix 6x86MX chip with 28MB of ram, running on Win 98, yes you read it right. Anyway they do not know alot about PC's and use the internet infrequently, well they would with that PC.

They have a 'pay as you go' account with Supanet.com. But I convinced them to subscribe to a free months trial with AOL as they had no security on their PC and were clueless about critical updates.

So after a defrag, it's first naturally, downloading 18 Windows critical updates, and AVG Anti-Virus, Spybot, SpyBlaster, and ZoneAlarm. They have gone from owning a 'bag of crap' to owning a 'secure bag of crap'  ;D

The connection speeds are usless, they have a 56Kbps modem but AOL connects at 28Kbps and Supanet at 31Kbs, do you think it is a BT line problem. The phone line also has a fax machine connected to it, on a first to grab the line gets connected basis.

Any ideas folks?

PS. the Mailwasher site link from PC-Pals don't work :-X

Thanks for pointing out the dodgy MailWasher link Tony.  You are right.  It doesn't work despite the fact that it is kosher.  If I copy and paste it into the address bar it works fine.  So what is happening here?   ???

What Mailwasher link?  It should be www.mailwasher.net.  That works.   ;)

Cheers Adept, I'll tell him about that and it's up to him to chase BT up.

I actually wrote and posted this half an hour ago but it's a naff connection as you know  ;D

Trust Clive to cock it up!   ;D ;D

Sean will have to amend that.  I think it's the / after .net that needs removing.   ;)

I'm always connected at 28Kbps due to a DAC'd line.

BT promised to replace it when they come to install broadband - but we'll wait and see.  If they do, broadband speeds will be a hell of a shock to me  :o

I bet it will be DJ1UK  ;D ;D ;D of course my probs are compounded by only having 28MB free memory..... that disappears at start up, and I have disabled 15 programs from starting up via msconfig. I downloaded 'Freemem' and it reads 'Zero' after boot up, well I have set it to grab 14MB back after start up but that don't go far  ;)
