Ian Holm
« on: June 19, 2020, 21:11 »
Actor Sir Ian Holm has died.  Whilst he was never a superstar, he was one of my favourite actors and I have both the BBC 'Lord of the Rings' radio CDs (in which he played Frodo Baggins) and the extended 'Lord of the Rings' DVDs (in which he played Bilbo Baggins).  He was super in both.  Yet I shall always have the fondest memory of him playing the part of a goose farmer, alongside his then-wife Penelope Wilton, who took it upon himself to walk his geese from Norfolk to Smithfield Market in London one Christmas in the early 1980s, exercising his ancient rights after an industrial dispute left him without mechanised transport.  I recorded the film on a VHS tape and it's been copied into digital format although as you can imagine the quality of the tape deteriorated markedly over the years.  Nevertheless, it's a firm family favourite which we watch every Christmas.

There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is readily adopted.

I will always remember him as the treacherous robot, Ash, in the Alien films.
