Computer abreviations
« on: September 01, 2003, 14:50 »
Hi all,

Sometimes I feel lost when seeing the computer abreviations in the forum or somewhere else. Is there any interesting site which gives us the full meaning of those abreviations and if possible to explain to us what is that exactly and what is the function of that thing?

                            Thanks.

Hi Sandra,

Well, there are many. But especially the pieces inside the PC. Some of them I know but some others not. My memoy is not good, but if I search in the forum I can tell many examples.

But anyway, it'll be good not to know the abreviations of the names of hardware, it'll be even better if there is a site which explains every abreviation and it's function.

                       Thank you.

Just a fast look on the forum I found some, although I know some of them.

    Take some examples:

    ATA
    EIDE
    CPU
    ISP
                   ETC...

Thanks DJ1UK,

That's not bad at all. It's even good.

But it seems to me that it misses many abreviations.

If we can find more than that, and (if possoble) the role of everyone of them (for those which have certain function), that will be ideal.

                       Thanks a lot again.

    Thanks again DJ1UK,

I think that the link in your first post is much better than those of second post.

If you can find better, it's great.

                                       Thank you.

Just a fast look on the forum I found some, although I know some of them.

        Take some examples:

        ATA
        EIDE
        CPU
        ISP

Sometimes its not necessary to know the full names as they are often just as meaningless to me Joudi, usually as long as you know for example that the EIDE is the type of drive that connects to the IDE channel on the motherboard (E,I think is just enhanced IDE although I stand to be corrected).
ATA is the soon to be standard replacement for IDE.
I know that CPU is Central Processing Unit and that ISP is Internet Service Provider but the rest often just become a name in itself to me,such as DMA and UDMA.
I would have thought that the abbreviations are fairly universal as english seems to be the main PC language similar to the way that it is now accepted as the "norm" for nautical and aeronautical communications.
This will probably make the abbreviations and acronyms easier for a non native english speaker to learn what that thing is rather than its full name  :-*

I know what you mean Joudi  :)

Its when they start to get technical and say connect the IPJ to the CFP and get a new RTO for the TPW (for example) - its like a different language to me.

I just ask what does that mean? If I don't know, which is most of the time

    That's exactly so Michelle.

And of course, we don't wan't those professionals to continue using that language for themselves alone. We can join them and tell:  Hey....We too can understand that! So don't continue feeling upon us!

        Right Michelle?

And if we can learn more, why not?    ;)

         Sandra,

That's what I need. Like the way you are explaining these things. So, if there is a dictionary or site on internet who can do that it's very good.

I agree it is better to know than not to know but in the same way that some people dont know what R.S.V.P and Q.E.D. etc. are in full they know what they mean,I think that PC terminology is much the same  :)

Yes Michelle, one day we must become "Techies" like them.

You see....You've started today to be on the correct way. You had a correct suggestion. Go on, and soon you'll be beyond Adept   ;)

Me, poor man, it'll take me a little while more. But anyway, I'll join that group (I hope).   :D

        Go on Michelle   :gofor:
