BT announced on Monday that a further 20 local exchanges have been added to its broadband rollout programme after hitting their pre-registration trigger levels.

ADSL should be available from each of the local exchanges by the end of May at the latest. In each case, sufficient local residents registered interest in getting broadband -- via BT's registration scheme -- to persuade the telco that it was commercially viable to upgrade the local exchange

Three exchanges -- Brixworth, Goole, and Sleaford -- have been given an activation date of 7 May.

Newtown, New Mills, Halstead, Thirsk, Alresford, Liphook, Horsely Fields and Galashiels should all be activated by 14 May.

North Shore, Totnes, Wargrave, Oakham, Headley Down, Southwell, Tavistock and Irvine Oldtown are all pencilled in for 21 May, with the Loose exchange of Kent bringing up the rear with an activation date of 28 May.

The highest trigger level achieved was Newtown's 450 broadband pre-registrations.

These latest 20 exchanges takes to 158 the number that have hit their trigger levels since the broadband registration scheme was launched -- of which 23 are already upgraded and offering ADSL.

According to a BT Wholesale spokesman, a further 25 exchanges are within 10 percent of their trigger level and are expected to reach it "in the near future".

Long-range broadband 'will not be slower'
13:42 Monday 24th February 2003
Graeme Wearden

BT believes it can increase ADSL's range without slashing its bandwidth, meaning that another 600,000 homes should be able to get a 512Kbps service after all
A longer-range broadband product being developed by BT will be just as fast as its existing consumer ADSL service, contrary to earlier suggestions from the telco.

This 'extended reach' ADSL is being trialled by just 10 people, but a larger trial is expected to begin in late March.

By increasing the distance over which ADSL will work, BT hopes to reduce the number of households that cannot get broadband -- even though their local exchange has been upgraded -- because they live too far away from the exchange.

Up to 6 percent of households in ADSL-enabled areas suffer from this problem. Technical limitations mean that today's 512Kbps ADSL won't work properly if the line loss on a telephone line is greater than 55dB -- equivalent to a line length of about 5.5km.

According to BT, this 'extended reach' broadband will halve the number of households whose line quality is too poor for ADSL to work.

"We are conducting internal trials, looking to extend the maximum line loss permitted from 55dB to 60dB. The impact of this would be to increase ADSL coverage in enabled areas from today's 94 percent to 97 percent," a BT Wholesale spokesman told ZDNet UK News on Monday.

Before BT launched rate-adaptive DSL, the maximum line loss allowed was 41dB, a maximum line length of just 3.5km.

BT had said last week that this forthcoming extended reach ADSL would run at 256Kbps rather than 512Kbps, a statement reported by ZDNet UK.

However, BT has now said that this is not the case, and that it hopes to raise the maximum line loss without dropping the bandwidth.

This confusion within BT seems to have arisen because BT Wholesale is also developing a 256Kbps ADSL product. This, though, is at a very early stage. According to BT, some Internet service providers would like to be able to offer a cheaper and slower broadband product, so it is investigating whether such a service is commercially and technically feasible.

So perhaps a glimpse ahead could even see the enlightning prospect of 56Kbps ADSL for all!!   ;)  ::)

BT expands broadband-trigger scheme
13:42 Monday 31st March 2003
Graeme Wearden

Good news for more than one hundred areas trapped on the wrong side of Britain's broadband divide as BT's latest ADSL triggers are set lower than expected.

BT announced details of a further swathe of broadband trigger levels on Monday, giving hope to 102 communities that currently aren't served by its ADSL network.

These trigger levels are a measure of how many area residents need to register an interest in broadband before BT will upgrade the local exchange. Over half of the triggers are between 300 and 400 registrations, lower than generally expected, and just one local exchange -- Hollinswood in Shropshire -- was unlucky enough to receive a trigger of 750.

BT had not set trigger levels for these 102 exchanges earlier because it either hadn't completed calculating the cost of installing ADSL, or had carried out an assessment and decided that the cost would be too great to make it financially viable.

The list includes Essex's Chafford Hundred, which had achieved nearly 500 registrations despite not having been set a trigger level at all. Having been given a trigger level of 450, Chafford has now passed the test and been added to BT's ADSL rollout programme.

A BT spokesman explained that as some of the costs associated with upgrading to ADSL are falling, exchanges that once were uneconomic to upgrade are now becoming more viable.

The total cost of upgrading an exchange is still formidable, and according to BT it will range from £200,000 to £500,000 for each of the 102 exchanges on the list.

Some BT critics have claimed that its trigger levels are simply too high and don't accurately represent the raw cost of upgrading an exchange, but the telco is keen to sink these suggestions -- including one argument that just 50 broadband users are needed per exchange.

"If their numbers added up then we'd have done it (upgraded more exchanges)," insisted the BT Wholesale spokesman. He also pointed out that local-loop unbundling means that any company can install ADSL kit in an exchange and offer broadband services.

The primary cost is usually the expense of installing the bandwidth needed to connect the exchange to BT's main network and the Internet.

"Backhaul is the pretty much always the largest single cost of upgrading an exchange. In addition, there is the cost of the DSL kit, and the expense of accommodation and infrastructure -- building new rooms where required and installing air conditioning and cooling systems," the spokesman explained.

Well, it's got to happen hasn't it?  To have a PC still on 56K in a few years will be like having a black and white TV, or a Betamax video.

Even if BT don't get their act together, someone's bound to come with an alternative, so that even people in the most remote areas can get broadband.

And then perhaps even in Carmarthenshire, Sean!   ;) ;D ;D

BT enlists broadband supporters with 'campaign in a box'
11:07 Tuesday 15th April 2003
Graeme Wearden

An online toolkit will let activists order leaflets and posters, and gives advice on how to drive local interest in broadband
BT is giving a boost to local groups who are campaigning for broadband by giving them advice and practical assistance on how to persuade more of their neighbours to sign up for ADSL.

The telco announced on Tuesday that it has developed an online toolkit that aims to help broadband campaigners to drive awareness and interest in high-speed Internet services.

Described as a "campaign in a box" Web site, www.bt.com/broadband now lets people order promotional leaflets and posters. It also allows potential campaigners to check whether there is already any promotional activity already running in their area, and gives advice on how to get a campaign up and running.

BT's ADSL network currently reaches around two-thirds of the UK population, covering the local exchanges that were commercially viable to upgrade.

For many of the remaining exchanges trapped on the wrong side of the broadband divide, BT has calculated the number of people that would need to pay for broadband to make an upgrade financially viable.

These trigger levels typically vary from 200 to 750 registrations, and hundreds of campaign groups have already sprung up as broadband-hungry people try to hit their local exchange's trigger level.

BT hopes that its new campaign toolkit will help grassroots activists to increase interest in broadband -- which will then allow the telco to cost-effectively roll out ADSL in more parts of the UK.

"The key to successful local broadband awareness campaigns has been the energy and drive of the individuals who can see what broadband will mean for them and their communities," said Philippa Winterburn, BT Wholesale's head of broadband marketing, in a statement.

"Their enthusiasm is infectious and highly effective at a local level. This Web site provides them with an online 'campaign in a box' toolkit to build a strong campaign, which will help speed up the arrival of broadband in their area," Winterburn added.

BT's broadband site is already attracting interest. In March the site was visited by 233,000 unique users and delivered over 46 million page impressions, BT said.

BT also announced on Tuesday that it is setting another 200 trigger levels. Two of these exchanges -- Shillington in Hertfordshire and Limpley Stoke near Bath -- will immediately be added to BT's ADSL rollout programme as enough local people have already registered their interest.

Details of these 200 trigger levels should be available on the BT broadband site from Tuesday.

Several other Web sites also help broadband campaigners to hit their trigger levels, including www.wewantbroadband.co.uk, which is run by Eclipse Internet. It contains details about the availability of ADSL, SDSL, satellite and wireless broadband.

The silly thing is that if they enabled the exchange more people would probably see the advantage of ADSL at their friends or relatives houses and may decide to get it themselves whereas if they havent seen how much an improvement it is over 56K they may never even think of pre registring  ::)

we now have 194 registrations out of 300, so we are getting there. Trouble is we have cable covering our exchange area hence it is taking some achieving, and before you ask, nope no cable near my abode  >:(

I hate BT they are prejudece against peeps that have weird accents who ain't English. Should be called English Telecom. They are making the SE pay up for enabling exchanges cause we will never get them because we are spread out across our Beutiful country. Shame Nessy can't lay cable  :D

Currently my exchange has 134 registrations with no trigger  >:(. I live closer to Big_Boss's exchange than my own and I still can't get it GRRRRRRRRRRR

I take it you hail from Bonny Scotland Robotochan?

Alas there is always a price tp pay when you live in a low population place of beauty. Oh and then theres the lack of a decent national football team to put up with as well, but compensated for by your fans being welcome anywhere.  ;)

I'm of to watch the footy now  ;D

You were saying  ;D

Not to bad considering ten first team picks were unavaliable. If ten first team Scotland picks were unavaliable, I reckon Lona would have a good chance of getting a game  ;D ;D ;D

Lol Tony....And i'm sure she would....Have you seen her dribble.. ;)...it's second to none.. ;D

But you must admit it was a p*ss poor performance...and it was never a penalty.. ::)

I did enjoy the fluke ehh thrashing you gave Germany the other year... :)

Never the less...Me thinks that Scotland's performance this week was better than England's.. :P...even if lona was only on the bench.. ;) ;D ;D

You won't go far wrong with Pipex, Sean.  They usually do a good deal, either a free modem, or no set up costs, and at £23.44 per month, they are not one of the dearest either.  I would strongly recommend them.

I dont really mind if you dream of me naked darling  :-*

There are now under 400 exchanges left with an actual trigger level, so unless BT Wholesale release more triggers soon, the demand tracker scheme may start to tail off interest wise. Another 400 more triggers are expected this summer, though no precise date is available for when.

Exchanges ready for service on 24th September 2003:
Balby Bearsden Boston Spa Bridport
Flint Haddenham Holmewood Martock
Metheringham Middleton On Sea Milford Haven Oatlands Okehampton Royston Shaftesbury Smallfield Stoke Bishop

Exchanges ready for service on 1st October 2003:
Clowne Enniskillen Swanage Windermere
