Title: Anyone with IC24.net ?
Post by: DJ on May 05, 2003, 15:57
Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone is with IC24.net  There mail servers have been down since yesterday morning and I can't get access to my emails.

Does anyone else use IC24 for email and have you had access to your emails?

Tried phoneing they're 50p a min support but no answer as yet - doesn't look too good.  :-\

Cheers

I just checked on ISPr for you and was about to post your own message back to you!   ;D  I don't use that ISP sorry.

I know it's the ultimate sin (multi posting) but I'm getting a bit fed up of waiting for my emails.  ISPreview seems to be a bit quiet at the moment.

I have my own domain now so I've just upgraded it to include its own pop3 box - so i don't need to use IC24.

Just need to change over all my newsletters etc to the correct email address - could be a slow process!!

Phoned support again and they don't know when it'll be fixed - though the technicians are working on it!!   :-[

Cheers Anyway Clive.

Not at all DJ1UK.  No point in putting all your eggs in one basket is there?   ;D  The IC24 forum on ISPr was empty apart from your post so I can only presume there can't have been many problems with it to date.  I hope they get it sorted out for you as soon as possible.

My dad uses IC24 and he couldn't log in for most of yesterday. It did come back later on in the afternoon though.

Cheers Adept.

The website was down as well yesterday and the dial-up number was always engaged or producing errors.

I don't use their dial up, just the email - and it still ain't working.  Support says its a major fault and can't say if it'll get fixed today or not.

I have changed my email address in the profile on pc-pals and getting topic reply emails through OK from you lot - so everything isn't so bad  :P

ISPs are notoriously poor at providing basic services like mail and news. I use Demon Internet; their mail servers are so unreliable that they are nearly inusable >:( IMO it is better to let your ISP provide your Internet connection and buy your email elsewhere.

The cheapest way to do this is to buy a web hosting package (for as little as £20 per year and usually includes a domain name). You can then send and receive mail using this domain name, without having to worry about changing your address every time you change ISP :)

Good advice Adept.

I use force9 as a unmetered dial up and use there webspace too.  But have kept ic24 as my email address.

I have bought a domain from oneandone.co.uk and have just set up a pop3 mailbox on it today.  I know I should have done it earlier but it was one of those things that I just forgot  ;D

Hopefully all will be well by tomorrow and I can start advising people to use my new email address.

I used to use IC24 when it was completely free of any charges (subscription or call charges) between 8pm to midnight, seven  days a week.  I never used their e-mail, as Adept says it is better to have your own domain.

A really useful Pop3 service can be found through Yahoo.  Sign up for a webmail account through the UK site (yahoo.co.uk) and look for the link for pop3 access.  You are expected to sign up for Yahoo UK's sponsor's newsletters, but all you need to do is remove ALL ticks from the boxes, hit the button, and you have a pop3 account that stays with you.  I use mine all the time, for non friends and family.

Cheers.

Is the Yahoo POP3 still free Dave?

Hi again.

No good news yet - its been 48 hours now and still no sign of it being fixed.

I have set up my main email as a pop3 box on oneandones hosting account that i have.  But anyone emailing me at my ic24 email address will have to wait until they fix the server.

Lycos also offer free pop3 accounts and you don't need to sign up for any newsletters.

Another option for free POP3 accounts is www.talk21.com, which is run by BT.

Is the Yahoo POP3 still free Dave?

Hi, Simon.

I currently have four @yahoo.co.uk accounts set up on my machine.  In addition to the one I mentioned earlier, my two sons and a female friend (who does not have her own internet access) have accounts.  They are still working and free.  I read that Yahoo had started charging for pop3, but it seems that so long as you sign up on the UK site for a .co.uk address and follow the links, it is still free.

Thanks, Dave - worth knowing.   ;)

At long last the servers seem to be up and running again.  Must have bought new hamsters to keep the generator wheel going  :D

Only 60 odd emails to sort through now.

Not going to complain too much - been with IC24 for about 10 years and its the first major fault i've had with them.  :-\

And they didn't even lose your e-mails??  That's pretty impressive.  BTO are notorious for losing mail when their servers go down.

I think one minor screw-up every six months is about right for a "reliable" ISP DJ. One in 10 years is nothing short of miraculous :o

Fully agree Adept.

Nope Clive they didn't loose any emails - I kept sending myself test messages to my address every day - and they were all there when the mail downloaded.

Out of the 60 odd I had only about 5 were useful (one was a credit card bill another a mobile bill and 3 from family)  ::)
