Hi danlan02 :welcome:
Have a look at this Microsoft Knowledgebase article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312348&Product=oex).
I hope it helps :)
Edit: Typos corrected ;)

I have a another problem with Outlook Express. Whenever I open it to download mail it imports all my contacts from MSN. I keep deleting them but when I open outlook again they are back and I can't shut down msn when I am in Outlook Express.
-
I thought I knew this one, but I've been going through all the settings in Outlook Express, and can't find anything to connect it with Messenger. Perhaps I was thinking of Outlook? Sorry Lona, not much help to you. :-\
You could always try Mozilla Mail! ;) ;D ;D

Sandra told me a few days ago that there is a setting under tools/options in OE which will prevent Messinger from doing that, but it's not on my version. I am totally unable to wield any control over mine despite trying every trick in the book. It's disconnected at present but can turn itself on without warning at any time. My OE is on at the moment too. Oh, and of course it downloads all my contacts into my address book as well. I would love to find a solution to these problems. One which doesn't contain the letter "M" would be nice. ;D

I can't find it in my OE either. As you may remember, Clive, I had the same problem with Windows Messenger 4.7 taking on a life of it's own. I have since updated to Windows Messenger 5.0 (download here) (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/default.asp), and the automatic signing on problem no longer occurs, but you have to make sure in both MSN, and Windows Messengers, that the boxes are un-ticked under Options > General to stop then starting automatically (see shot below). Not sure if that will help Lona though. There is definitely a setting in Outlook, but not OE, as far as I can see.

Thanks Simon. I'll try that. I notice that it's connected itself again without asking permission.
-
These are the options that I have in my Outlook Express 6 ???
It only mentions Windows Messenger as I told you before Clive so it wont be applicable to Lona for MSN Messenger :doggie:
-
I found this. I know how to get into regedit but don't know what a Dword is. Could be a Dinah word for all I know. ???
To prevent MS Messenger from loading with OE you must do BOTH of these
things:
In Tools | Options uncheck the option to automatically logon to
Messenger.
AND
In View | Layout uncheck the Contacts Pane.
To just stop it from running follow this advice from Kelly:
"Only 3 Registry edits are required to stop Messenger and get rid of the
delay in OE. Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client
Add the following values as New, DWord Values:
PreventRun
PreventAutoRun
Set the value of each of these to 1
Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Add a New, DWord value called Hide Messenger and set the value to 2.
(This step is required to prevent a long delay when opening OE with the
Contacts pane enabled)

I've cracked it guys. All you need to do is go into view and untick Contacts. :D. Does that make me an apprentice techie ;)
-
Unfortunately you wont have any contacts showing then will you Lona ???
-
I haven't got that option in mine Sandra. I did run a 'remove messenger' program at some point, when I was having trouble with 4.7 automatically logging on, so maybe it removed that option from OE as well? As I said to Clive, I now have Windows Messenger 5.0, as well as MSN6, and don't have the problem.
You could always try Trillian, Lona! ;) ;D ;D

Unfortunately you wont have any contacts showing then will you Lona ???
Removing contacts in Outlook Express does not remove them from MSN,Sandra, I have done it and it's ok, I still have all my contacts when I log on to MSN
-
I'm going to take Simon's advice and download Windows Messenger 5 tomorrow. I will report back. ;D
-
I was meaning your ordinary address book contacts too Lona, the ones you really want in your list not, just the MSN ones :doggie:
-
I never have my contacts showing in Outlook Express. It's a stupid feature. Why would you want to know which of your messenger contacts are online, while you are checking your e-mail?
If you might occasionally want to know, right-click the main toolbar, choose Customise, and add the contacts button. That way you can easily switch it on and off, without having to go through View > Layout.
-
Well said, Dave! My thoughts exactly. ::)
-
I dont have it for that Dave, I have it so I can send an e mail by clicking on them instead of opening the addy book or new mail and browsing through the list.
I dont however like having the messenger addys listed along with the people that I normally e mail ???
