Title: iPod
Post by: Clive on June 08, 2011, 06:51
I know I'm light years behind the curve but does anyone use an iPod?  I like listening to 60's music and quite fancy having a dabble at downloading.

Hi Clive, I have an Ipod....easy to use IMHO

Have a look at  albums called the Boat that rocks and 101 pirate radio hits  ;) for 60s music.

I use the iPod integrated into my iPhone.  Once you've got iTunes up and running, it's very straightforward, Clive.

My iPod is the best gadget I've ever owned.  I rarely use it for listening to music but it's great for listening to downloaded radio broadcasts and the Harry Potter audiobooks.  The video quality is acceptable to me too, and I often convert videos to watch on it.  Treat yourself, Clive; you won't regret it :) .

Me neither. The Bose in-ear are very good, the on-ear noise cancelling ones are even better. :)

I don't like things in my ear, so could never get on with the 'bud' type earphones.  You're tempting me with those Bose ones again.  ;D

I own a 120GB one-pod, but seldom use it for playing music - I have a rather nice sound system for that kind of thing.  Where the one-pod really has proved indispensable is during my stays in hospital, when I've finally got around to watching a lot of the films that have somehow found their way onto my hard drive recently.

The only problem came during my last stay, when the ward nazi wouldn't let me charge it up because it hadn't got a little green sticker on the charger.  It was probably the medication to blame, but I may possibly have said something uncharitable to the ugly, fat, lesbian bitch as a result.

as you can guess, I used to live on my ipod. All difference now with my phone does everything in one. Still I love being able to listen to music on the go.

I was gonna say don't get a nano  - I have one but the touch screen is a little small and fiddly for me... but works like a dream.

Downloading music, I hate itunes - I much prefer play.com - as I find it cheaper and easier. But iTunes is click and go.

Post by: sam on June 08, 2011, 21:31
Oh and the audio quality is nicely improved by using proper headphones and not the s**t that apple give by default.

So, I've found the iPod in a seemingly unopened box.  It's a 30GB 7500 songs variety if that is meaningful.  The box contains the iPod, a USB cable and a pair of naff earphones but no CD.  Is there supposed to be one?   :dunno:  It says I must attach it to my computer which I did several hours ago and it displays the message "Do not disconnect".  What happens next?   :D

I'm surprised there isn't a disk in that type. I'm guessing its the one that isn't touch screen? Windows media player should have connected to it but I guess first use probably does mean using itunes

I have a Nano and tried and didnt like itunes so had a bit googling and found there is other software available to manage your music stc.

I found this (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/the-unofficial-guide-to-installing-itunes-10-without-bloatware/2390) site that tells you how to install itunes with out the bloat, then you can use which ever software you like.I use mediamonkey (http://www.mediamonkey.com/)  its good enough for what I need and its a decent player too.I cant put photos on my nano from mediamonkey but I didnt want it for that, just music so thats ok

OK, new questions:

How do I delete tunes which I recorded by mistake?  Fifty Cent isn't really my scene.

I would like a pair of small speakers to plug in.  Quality is essential but I don't want to pay too much.  I'm prepared to splash out a fiver.

What about a mains charger?
Title: Re: iPod
Post by: Rik on June 13, 2011, 11:29
Right click it and select delete, Clive.

What do you want to use the speakers for, serious listening or background noise?

The easiest charger is a USB charger, which you can pick up quite cheaply. Failing that, you can buy an Apple branded one. I can't remember the price offhand, but you'll pay for the name.
Title: Re: iPod
Post by: Clive on June 13, 2011, 11:33
Background noise Rik.  :D  I already have a USB charger but there will be times when I won't have access to a computer so a mains charger will be good.
Title: Re: iPod
Post by: Simon on June 13, 2011, 11:34
How on earth did you manage to download Fifty Cents?   To delete, delete in iTunes, then resync, and it will disappear from the iPod.

You'll be able to find a mains charger on Amazon, but I'd advise not to go for the very cheapest.  You probably also find some headphones on Amazon.

I already have a USB charger but there will be times when I won't have access to a computer so a mains charger will be good.

?? I'm talking about a mains charge which provides a 5V rail via a USB socket, Clive.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Genuine-Apple-A1299-MB706B-Adapter/dp/B002FDGJNM/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1307961462&sr=8-18

£4.84 for the Apple one.

Most speakers sound pretty poor, they're worth spending a bit of money on. If you have a John Lewis or similar nearby, get them to demonstrate.
Title: Re: iPod
Post by: Clive on June 13, 2011, 11:42
Well I was hoping to get small "cube type" speakers as headphone aren't always convenient.  I lied about the Fifty Cents, but I do want to delete a song which was mistitled in the listings.
Title: Re: iPod
Post by: Simon on June 13, 2011, 11:48
If you want to treat yourself a little, I'd highly recommend this iPod speaker dock, which would also act as a charger:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00422U0E8/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1307961874&sr=8-1

Unfortunately, it was a lot cheaper when I bought it, but you can get similar for less.  The sound is very warm, rather than tinny, which you can get from some smaller speakers.
Title: Re: iPod
Post by: Clive on June 13, 2011, 11:48
Not sure that that power adaptor would be suitable Rik as it still relies on the availability of USB which I won't have if I'm away on holiday.  My £2 speakers from Maplin are not at all bad.  I'm not saying they are good either.   ;D

I got a really good iPod docking station from Aldi for £15 which incorporates a MW/FM radio too.  Cheap doesn't necessarily mean poor quality.  Mind, I wouldn't trust the stuff that Lidl sells; I've been caught out by them too many times, witness my bicycle computer which can't detect when the wheels are turning and my camera mini-tripod which wobbles and tries to give your fingers a blood-wheel when you extend or retract the legs.

I thought sixties music didn't travel well.  At least, that's my recollection of listening to Radio Caroline with its dodgy broadcasting technology.  Don't be surprised if the iPod starts playing you up on the voyage, Clive - it might be channeling the ghosts of those long-departed pirates (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv637%2FGillD%2FSmilies%2Fpirate.gif&hash=a30521b0769c005c5d8b359be2340cd649f1dcdc) .

It must be reassuring to know that they failed.

Mind, the South Atlantic isn't particularly renowned for pirates.  There's not a lot of business for them unless they want to hijack sheep/cattle transports.

Yes, the ship used water cannon and searchlights to dazzle them.  Then they put their foot on the accelerator pedal and outrun them.
All the passengers were told to leave their cabins and sit in the corridors in the middle of the ship to be safe from bullets and missiles.
