Title: Real Pies!
Post by: Simon on September 21, 2010, 19:08
I've just had a delivery from The Real Pie Company (http://www.therealpiecompany.co.uk/), and would heartily recommend you give them a try.  The pastry on the sausage rolls is as flaky as I've ever had, and they, and the pies and pasties, are stuffed full of meat.  I had a Cornish Pasty for tea this evening, and it was delicious!  Looking forward to trying the Apple and Cherry pie for 'afters' later.

I'll second that. So far I've tried the Cornish Pasty, Meat & Potato Pie and Steak & Guinness pie. Chock full of high quality meat and flavour, I highly recommend them. The Tomato Stall's Red Tomato Relish (http://www.thetomatostall.co.uk/shop/view/red-tomato-relish-300g/) make a good accompaniment.

I'm a big fan of pies too, although the more I eat the bigger a fan I become  .

Pie-making seems to be a skill which so many households have lost these days.  It's only since I've had my kitchen re-furbished that I've started trying to make my own, and I've got to say I need much more practice to get pie pastry right!  What I would like are some silicone pie moulds but there don't seem to be any available.

Ever tried The Blessed Delia's flaky pastry sausage rolls?  They're gorgeous!

Never used the company, but are these any good, Gill?

Thanks for looking, Simon, but perhaps I should have mentioned that I'm looking for silicone pie moulds that are suitable for cooking single portion pies.  I'm looking to cook pies the same size as those awful ones you'd buy from a chip shop.

I'm just off out, Gill, but it might be worth trying Lakeland if you haven't already.

Mrs Clive who makes exceedingly good pastry always claims the secret is having cold hands.  I suppose a warm handed cook could run their hands under the cold water tap for a few minutes.

I'm afraid Lakeland can't help, Simon.

Actually, I'm pretty good with pastry - it's just that I haven't got much experience making individual pies.  My hands are definitely on the warm side which is why I usually make pastry in a food processor.  For me, the skill is in knowing when to stop processing  ;D .  If you run the machine only a few seconds longer than it needs, the pastry becomes over-worked.

Well, it's like this, at 30, you're no longer young, but you don't really notice, at 40, you begin to realise your arms are too short when you try to read a newspaper, at 50, you begin to notice that your body doesn't quite function as it used to and you get up to pee a lot at night. Come 60, and bits start dropping off or failing completely. I'll continue in 8 years.  ;)

Well, I've still got an on / off problem with my shoulder, and last week, I was almost inert with lower back pain.  I did some exercises to try to relieve that, and managed to do something to my right knee, which now aches like hell, and I can't kneel flat on it.  Sitting in the car all day, hasn't made it any better, hence my taking this morning off, so I can keep walking around.

Simon-I had a sample pack from QVC a few months ago, but found the samples not as good as were shown on TV. They were a lot smaller, and didnt seem to contain as much filling as was shown.
Although the taste was good, I felt cheated. What size pies did you order?

 ;D
Title: Re: Real Pies!
Post by: Simon on September 27, 2010, 13:54
The large ones, of course!  ;D  I've tried the steak and kidney, and the chicken and ham, as well as the apple and cherry dessert pies, and they were all packed full of filling.  I'd suggest ordering a sample from the website, DG, unless you have a local outlet that sells them.

The excitement of waiting for the pies has all come to nothing. Just had an e-mail telling me my payment has been refunded, as I am not in their delivery area. Im on the Isle of Wight. Oh well off to Tesco for some more mass produced crap!!

Funny thing was when they were on QVC I had a delivery!

Be adventurous, Delgado - make your own pies instead of buying them!  At least you'll know what goes into them, instead of all the mechanically recovered mush that so many manufacturers put into their pies.  You can't even trust so-called 'premium' products nowadays.

Had the pies delivered on Tuesday. Tried the first one which was medium size Lamb in Mint gravy, followed by Apple and Blackberry for afters.

Very good pies worth a try; the meat was in abundance and the pastry was homemade and flaky. The medium size would do me for two meals, although you could eat one if you were greedy!
