Title: Tethering
Post by: Clive on November 05, 2021, 17:00
You can see that I now have stratospheric knowledge of my new toy (not really) and I have a use for tethering my Kindle to the phone.  The phone says I can do it and gives me the password to join up but the hot spot doesn't appear on the Kindle WiFi list.

Also, what is the USB-C to lightning cable for?  It doesn't seem to fit anything at all.   :dunno:

Never done tethering.  The USB-C to lightning cable has lots of uses.  Er...  maybe for a USB-C charger?  :dunno:

It may be that I have to turn WiFi off in order to force the phone to run off O2.  I'll try it on the iPad if I can extract it from Mrs Clive's grip.  .

Unfortunately I have nothing to plug it into.  It won't fit the iPad charger, an Android or anything.  The USB-C is a little bigger than other USB connectors.

Yes the usb-c to lightning cable is to plug the usb end in to the usb-c charging plug they don't provide. If you haven't had a relatively new iphone recently you probably won't have one that takes the smaller connector  ':|   if you want to upload pics to a laptop you will also need a lightning to conventional USB cable.

I think you're right about turning off wifi, phones and other devices are awkward like that and will not look for a 4/5 g signal until there are no known wifi hotspots.

What a swizz!   All that money and they can't even provide a freaking plug for the charger!  :(

Now you know why Apple is worth $2.08 trillion!   :D

I saw that on the Apple website and thought they were taking the proverbial at that price.  The point is that I don't really need one because I have a wireless charger for the phone.  I'm just bemused that they included a cable that won't even plug into my iPad charger.

I believe other phone manufacturers are also following suit.  I think perhaps it's not just to do with with costs, but also to try to stop people from disposing of old chargers when they can still be used.

They claim it's "greener" as there is less packaging and production required. Not so if you then have to order a new one separately as the old one is incompatible with the new cable.

I believe it is a big push everywhere  - better for the planet

But definitely not for my pocket.  In the quest for tidiness, I bought a 6" lightning cable to fit into my 3xUSB wall plug.  Too short.  Now I have send for a 12" cable which should arrive tomorrow.  I still haven't managed tethering although it should be very easy.  Most probably the devices I'm trying are not compatible.

Although I've failed to tether the Kindle, I have managed to tether Mrs Clive's iPad to the iPhone and it was quite straightforward.  Both devices required codes to be swapped but it took no time at all.  It means that I won't have to pay for WiFi on the ship which is ridiculously expensive and barely works at all.

Does that mean we won't be getting a holiday after all?

The important clue was "Mrs Clive's iPad".  I'm not allowed to use it.
