Title: dvd / cd roms not working
Post by: TR on March 13, 2011, 19:15
I have a weird problem  ;D  no not me.

Friend gave me her PC to look at saying that the CD / DVD players dont work?  and she was correct, took them out booted up and reinstalled again saying found new hardware etc, but still doesnt work. The PC sees them and will eject the tray but wont recognise any discs?

I have tried putting them in an old tower I have and they work ok..weird huh, friends PC has all the latest drivers etc..anybody have any ideas on what could be the problem.

This has got me baffled  :stars:

If you go to the properties of each drive, then click the Auto Play tab, there might be some settings there that could be tweaked.  Sorry to be vague, I'm not on the PC at the moment.

I was going to suggest checking cables and jumpers, but I wouldn't have thought they'd work at all if they were wrong.

Something like this came up before, and I seem to recall there's a registry entry you can either change or remove, for it to be reset.

the fact that it worked on installing suggests XP is to blame...

Damn, I was just going to do my conjuring trick. ;D

If DVD/CDs become ‘lost’, code 39 error “Windows cannot load the driver. The driver may be missing or corrupted (Code 39)”.

Go to Device Manager, uninstall CD & DVD drivers. Uninstall Primary and Secondary IDE channels under IDE/ATAPI Controllers - ignore requests to re-boot machine.

Go to Regedit, navigate to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Look for the key which refers to DVD/CD-ROM drives. Delete the subkey UpperFilters, also LowerFilters if it is present.

Re-boot the machine. All should now be well.

I know you've tried the drives on another machine, but have you tried another drive in that machine?

It does seem to be pointing at the controller, doesn't it.

In Rik's case, a fat one   but I was wondering that too, Terry.  :dunno:

I've done a few Google searches on this and haven't come up with anything you haven't already tried.  :(

So, what does Terry need to do?

If it is the controller, it's probably motherboard based, so the solution would be to disable it and fit a separate controller card. The only other thing I can think is to try a Windows repair, and if that doesn't work, a full re-install.

Nope ..that didnt work

Just put the 2 said Drivers into a spare pc running Vista ....and all ok.

It must be something to do with the mobo?

I think so, Terry. Either than or the Windows installation is badly screwed.

Catch 22 then..how do you get xp repaired without a cd player

USB drive? Use a Linux distro and see if that can pick up the CD drives, if it can, it has to be Windows, if it can't, it's the mobo.
