i am on freeserve broadband which i am getting problems with
and i am thinking of changing to another broadband supplier
but i been told by people that some suppliers put a box by your computer to plug the modem into and that is no good for me as i got a laptop i need to transfer from one to the other one and of course i can't move the box around please can someone:help:me out :-\
-
Not too sure what you mean GSS.
Do you have an internal broadband modem in your laptop? How are you connected at the moment?
Let us know and I'm sure a few people will be here to try and 'sell' the best service ;)

I'm Sure Sandra will delight in explaining the merits of a Broadband Router, GSS, and why every home should have one! ;) It basically means you can connect two PCs (or a PC and a laptop) to the same phone line, as far as I understand it. That's as far as my knowledge goes, as I only have one PC, so I don't need a router.
As for Freeserve, are you not tied into a minimum term contract with them? Changing your broadband supplier is not as simple as changing a 56K Dial Up ISP, as there are usually set up costs to consider. Would it not be better to sort out the problems you are having with Freeserve, rather than changing?

i am looking in to term contract part at this time Simon

yes you got a good point there
i got a [speed touch usb modem]56k hope that help you DJ1UK
-
Sorry, GSS, I'm getting confused. ??? You said you're on Freeserve Broadband, but now you've just said you have a " [speed touch usb modem] 56k", so which is it? I'm no expert, but as far as I know, you can't get Broadband with a 56k Modem! ::) :-\

Nar ignore em Gott, and Get Plusnet ADSL via the banner ad link on This Page (http://www.tonysugrue.co.uk/) ............ ::)

Well, if you can get out of the Freeserve contract, which is what I think you said you're looking at, you could consider Pipex Xtreme (http://www.xtreme.pipex.net/adsl/sales/), which is what Sandra, Bat69 and myself use. There are no set up fees, if you already have your own equipment and it's £23.44 per month.
-
not bad i have to look into it thanks could you give me the phone number for them if you can for future reference if i decied to try them can you get a free trail and this the help line free
the one Tony put in i have to look into to but i think the one you got will do me
-
Everything is usually done online, GSS, but the contact details are here:
http://www.pipex.net/contact/

This could also be useful, GSS:

thank you Simon

RJ45 Cat 5 Patch Cable Green moulded snagless 1MTR
RJ45 Cat 5 Patch Cable Booted Blue 25MTR
I hope thats all i need, + my already trusty BB connection 8)
If anyone has any experience of installing a network with NTL broadband i would be glad for any help ;D
-
Well Gott, don't let me try to influence you with name dropping ;)
I'd just say to you ...PIPEX WHO !!!!!! look never mind what I say or Simons say's we could/do have vested interests ;D
Best go to a site dedicated to sussing out the best ISP's in the business, ADSL in your case. And let customer reviews be your guide http://www.ispreview.co.uk/review/ (http://www.ispreview.co.uk/review/)
Not a mention of Pipex ......but PlusNet on the other hand.... ;D
PS. when you go to that link, click on PlusNET to read pages of customer reviews. It's a good Yorkshire based value for money service...because they are tight buggers up North and demand good service ;D
-
That because we Pipex users dont want everyone to know how good it is in case it gets swamped Tony,so we never submitted our reviews ;)
-
Is that it..is that the best you can do Sandra ;D....I'm suprised a Northern Lass like yourself is supporting a Southern Softy Setup like Pipex ::) ;) ;D
-
ok i can't find my contract at this time but i got more time tomorrow i will look then
simon when i said i am looking in to term contract part
i meant i was looking for my contract
-
OK GSS. Yeah, the reason Pipex is not mentioned much on ISPr, is because people generally only comment on their ISPs if they have something to complain about. Human nature, I'm afraid. Look, how many times in your life have you gone for weeks with nobody commenting on your work, or whatever you do, but as soon as you make a mistake, they are down on you like a ton of bricks!
I rest my case. :P :)
-
I'd tuck that case under your arm Simon......as it looks like it has a very weak handle on it ;D
-
Well, you know what I'm like with cases Tony! ;D ;D
-
Here's an interesting site GSS that might help you choose.
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/isps/compare.asp
-
thank you ;D
-
ok ntl and BTOpenworld this no good

i am looking in to term contract part at this time Simon

-
That's OK then. :)

:help:
can someone tell me how i can get my CBUK number as i need it to do a link migration and my ISP [freeserve] wont give it to me
-
I have heard of some ISPs refusing to give this out,I am not sure of the legalities as to whether they can do this or not.
Can BT provide it or is it purely an ISPs own code ???
-
purely an ISPs own code
-
I had a quick look around and found this that may help GSS :
If your ISP is being difficult raise a complaint :
http://www.oftel.gov.uk
and you can talk to them on the phone takes 5 minutes,.
2 days later tiscali call me back as a result of the oftel complaint and as if by magic are now able to give me the CBUK number associated with my line,.
You could try that GSS,have you had your account longer than the minimum contract period as they may be allowed to withold the number until then or until you have paid the cancellation fee for early cancellation
For anyone who doesnt know what we are talking about ;)
What is a CBUK number?
All ADSL accounts are assigned a unique CBUK number that can be referenced by BT. When you open an account,BT will give this number to your provider. You will need to know your CBUK number before you can migrate an account to another provider.
Hope that this helps :doggie:

Only joking, GSS. A friend has just had Pipex installed, and it took less than a week to get online. However, he was not migrating from another provider, so maybe that will make a difference to you. Hope to see you soon, anyway. ;)
-
yes i don't have to see you for 1 to 3 week
