Title: High TV stand
Post by: Simon on August 24, 2008, 18:35
I'm looking for a higher than usual TV stand.  It's got to be 60cm tall, with enough shelf space for five boxes, including a large AV amp, and be able to hold a 37" flat screen TV.  All the stands I have come across have been too low to fit everything into, or have been Hi-Fi stands, which are not suitable for the TV.  I also don't want it to cost more than, say, £100.  Any help appreciated!

:)

Seems like a good DIY project Simon, especially of you can't get what you want.  DIY has never been so easy thanks to B&Q, Homebase and Wickes.

It would be a great DIY project - that was my first thought when I read this thread.  With a good straight edge, a router and a few cutters, an accurate square and a saw (to make life easier :) ) it should be well within the capabilities of most people.

I'm not 'most people' Gill, and can barely put up a coat hook without taking half the plaster off the wall.  ;D

David, thanks for those suggestions.  This is the sort of thing I've got now, and it needs to be much the same.  The only reason I want to replace it is, it's starting to look a bit tatty.

It's a pity you don't live nearer to me, or I'd make one for you.  I'm sure I could do it for less than £100.  If you like, I could try to put you in touch with some other woodworkers in your area who will be able make one.

Has it got to be wood Simon, have found the same sort of shape, but only in glass (black) and chrome seem to have found that  corner shape does it have to be wood or cabinet type for cables etc ?
Title: Re: High TV stand
Post by: Simon on August 24, 2008, 23:18
No, it doesn't have to be wood, but I'd prefer it to be black.

Thanks Gill, may come back to you on that,  :)

If you have one of those crappy LCD or Plasma TVs Simon, cant you just fasten it to the wall  ???

I am so pleased that I bought my HD CRT TV, especially after recently watching SD TV on my nieces very expensive, new LCD one  :)
Title: Re: High TV stand
Post by: Simon on August 26, 2008, 08:49
No, I can't fasten it to the wall, Sandra, because it's in a corner, and it's also under a sloping ceiling, not to mention that the walls in new properties these days will barely hold a picture up, let alone a TV.

No, not really, David.  Wouldn't be enough room as far as I can see.

Anyway, I'm off for a couple of days now, so will catch up when I get back on Thursday evening.
Title: Re: High TV stand
Post by: Sandra on August 26, 2008, 12:37
No, I can't fasten it to the wall, Sandra, because it's in a corner,.

I always laugh when people go on about how thin Plasma and LCD TVs are as they take up so little room compared to a CRT, then they stick them in the same corner that their old TV went in. They take up the same amount of space that way as they angle them across the corner so you do have more space but as its all behind the TV its of no benefit at all  ;D
Title: Re: High TV stand
Post by: David on August 26, 2008, 12:49
True Sandra,I have resisted putting mine on the wall,as far as I can see I will need to chanel out for all the cables for Sky,Home Cinema etc, aand its easier to bundle the cables behind the set.
I plan to buy a slightly larger TV before Christmas and also wll redeorate the room so thats the time when the TV will go on the wall. One problem i have never solved is the Home cinema speakers no room seems to be the right shape ?unless you wish to sit right in the centre of a room which is daft...this one will remain the same until a fortune spent on a suround system which doesnt require the square area needed for iptimum sound....but I rarely use it so academic really
Title: Re: High TV stand
Post by: Rik on August 26, 2008, 12:56
I've always felt that surround sound is a waste of time unless you're prepared to dedicate a room to it, David. Better yet, build a cinema. :)
Title: Re: High TV stand
Post by: David on August 26, 2008, 13:07
I have tried for years to get it right and now I dont like it that loud so admitted defeat...I do know  someone who did that when they bought a house which needed a major refurb she spent (this is true) around 20 K for the cinema room alone a specialist company came in,floorboards up etc,(part of the rebuild)there is no cable showing and speakers in ceiling, walls and god knows where   everything in that house is controlled by a remote control,I have never seen it but it sounds very high tech and very expensive  ...way way out of  most peoples price range I think the whole project including the house was just under that magic figure of 1 million pounds.......so no trip to Argos of Comets for her,and she lives with her cats........ ???
Title: Re: High TV stand
Post by: Rik on August 26, 2008, 15:12
I've stayed in a house that had a cinema included in the basement when it was built, so no wires, lots of attention to the acoustics and a large projected TV/DVD image. It was certainly the way to do things.
Title: Re: High TV stand
Post by: David on August 26, 2008, 15:56
Think its the only way to really get the effect......but you need a bank account larger than the basement to achieve it  ???

Sounds right Rik,to be honest Im not sure the exact sum she paid for this place but she got nearly 4 million in a divorce,(half the company) and bought a very old counrty house in need of major work....she is lovely and the cinema thing only came up when I mentioned having one she is very nice and would you believe hates money.and this I know is true I have known her many years, she shops in Primark but isnt mean just came up the hard way in life and made something of herself, the money sounds huge and it is but she put in over 25 years work for the company and her silly hubby runs off with a secretary just out of school.....well half his age....they never learn  :o:

Still not tall enough, Cam.  I think my only option is a hi-fi stand to put some of the equipment on, and a separate regular TV stand, but then I've got to find more space.  :aarrgh:

I hav nt seen any Simon and its that corner type angle which is the hardest and most are glass which seems to narrow the choice  ???
Title: Re: High TV stand
Post by: Simon on September 15, 2008, 23:03
Yes, it does seem a difficult thing to find, David.  I can't believe I have the most equipment in the world under a TV, but it does seem as though those with more than a VCR and a DVD are rarely catered for.

I'm trying to (got to!) avoid the temptation to start replicating old DVDs, and really want to stick to new releases for BD, but I have ordered a few, such as the Spider Man trilogy, Terminator 2, and the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, but that's as far as I want to go with 'old' stuff, until such time as they become cheaper.

How about, always stand to one side when using flash? ;D

A Sky HD box would fit nicely...

:smartarse:  I just KNEW you'd pick up the flash flare (well, you could hardly miss it!  :)x ) but it was just a quick snap, and I wanted it 'head on'.

I don't want Sky, as I don't get a chance to watch the channels I've already got!  I was thinking of a dedicated CD player, as with the best will in the world, DVD players don't handle music all that wonderfully.  I've made do up to now, but I would like to be able to hear my CDs in good quality again, especially now I have the Arcam amp.

A Humax twin tuner PVR would fit nicely Simon, or the new HD Dreambox 8000 which should be out soon with 2 DVBS 2 tuners and room for 2 more which can be cable, satellite or digital terrestrial. They have optional sata hard drive, sata DVD writer and Wi Fi as well as an ethernet port and are Linux based. Hopefully mine will be here later this week or next, as part of the pre official release, beta tester programme  :)
Title: Re: High TV stand
Post by: Simon on October 08, 2008, 09:53
I don't need any more PVRs, San, as the two Sony's both have 160Gb hard discs as well as the DVDR function, and as I said, I hardly get time to watch what I've recorded now.  However, the Dreambox does look rather cool, and to be able to record HD would be good.  I may, however, be limited by my Sky connection, which is only a single, basic something or other (sorry to be vague, I've never looked into Sky), plumbed through internally, as we are not allowed to have dishes in this area.
