Title: Cannot now get any Ebay page up
Post by: axus on August 28, 2003, 19:42
Help please
I have two PC's, the first one is connected to broadband and the second networked to the first via a crossover cable.
For no apparent reason, my wife suddenly, after weeks of no problems, cannot get on to " Ebay " on the second computer though she can bring up every other page easily. The first PC loads Ebay straight away every time.
Nothing has been done to either computer. ????????????????
I am totally non technical
Regards
Keith

Hi and :welcome:, One of the 'Techies' will be here shortly to help you.

Before that which operating system (i.e. Windows) version are you running and have you got any more info on how the PCs are networked?

Hi
Both machines are on XP Pro using the built in networking programme
I am using an internal broadband modem on the first machine with a crossover cable to the second which cannot raise Ebay.  It raised it fine upto a few days ago.  I have tried clearing out cookies and files.  I have looked under connections and Lan settings for auto-detect but it isn't there.
I need help at dummy level please

Hi Keith, this sounds like a puzzler, youre not trying to get onto "My ebay" on both PCs at the same time by any chance are you ?
Wondering if it wont accept the same log in details on both at once.
Are there any error message on second PC or is it just the page not displayed ?

I take it you can still access other web pages on the second PC? It's just ebay that won't load.

If you have made ebay to automatically sign you in, it might not let two PCs access the site at the same time with the same user ID - just like Sandra said  :P

Erm... I'm still thinking!

It has to be a security setting on no 2 PC then Keith.
Can you open IE in both and compare them at the same time on both PCs so that you can see if there is anything set differently on no 2 to no 1 ?
Check everything in TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS security, privacy and advanced :doggie:

I have checked both machines and they are set the same.   I have "reset" security, restored defaults and the privacy is identical, both machines, no change.
My better half thinks I have done it on purpose to stop her bidding !!!!!!!!!!!  as though (I wouldn't dare)

Try clearing your cache and cookies, Keith.  Often works wonders!   :)

Have you tried logging off on the first machine, then logging on on the second machine?
Title: Re:Cannot now get any Ebay page up
Post by: Sandra on August 28, 2003, 21:49
Cant do that Lona as hes networked via no 1 so that has to be connected to the net before no 2 can connect.
Thats the advantage of having a router so that either pc can connect independantly of the other or both at the same time :doggie:

Hi Keith :welcome:

I wonder, can you ping the Ebay address from the second PC?

I'll talk you though it if you need help.

Edit: BTW which ISP are you using?

Ok, Sandra, I see what you mean. If he connects on one goes into ebay and loggs off.  The go back in again on two and logs on that should work.

I have tried logging off on first machine then tried second but still no go.
How do I ping it please

Go to START,RUN then type CMD and then click OK and a DOS window appears.
At the prompt type ping xx.xx.xx.xx and then hit the enter key on your keyboard.
X equals the IP of your no 1 PC Keith.
If you are not sure what no 1 PCs IP is,if you go to network connections and clcik on LAN it should show you an IP address at the bottom left side of the window :doggie:

Sorry, I'm network connections.  There is "area connection 16"  and  "local area connection 18" but cannot find Lan.
Some one asked earlier, I am on ISP  Plus.net

Not sure which version of Windows you have Keith, but here goes:-

Click your Start button
Choose Run
If you have Win95,98 or ME
In the open box type command and press ENTER
If you have Win2000 or XP
In the open box type cmd and press ENTER

A DOS prompt window should open.

At the prompt type ping www.ebay.com (or whatever Ebay address you are using) and press ENTER

You should then see four "Reply from" lines and some "Ping Statistics". Otherwise you will get something like the picture below.

Routers do Simon, the problem with Keiths is that his no. 1 PC is connected by an internal BB modem to the net and his no. 2 PC is connected via an ethernet LAN to his no. 2 PC not via a router  :P

Getting back ON TOPIC

What software is running on the second PC Keith? Do you have a firewall for instance. It may be that Ebay has been inadvertantly blocked by your firewall.

They are both on XP Pro.
I have taken the firewall off whilst trying to sort this out

Have you got ICF disabled too Keith,to check it got to NETWORK CONNECTIONS and then properties for LAN and then its under ADVANCED :doggie:

Its probably me being thick but I cannot find LAN in network connections
Title: Re:Cannot now get any Ebay page up
Post by: Sandra on August 29, 2003, 00:10
It may be my fault Keith as I have a router on mine so it shows a LAN,I thought that yours would having an ethernet cable connecting your PCs too, have you got a dial up or other connection in their?
If so right click it and go to properties then advanced and it will have the option for Internet Connection Firewall to be enabled by ticking it.
Make sure that this is unticked :doggie:

Hi
There is a firewall box on no. 1 computer that is disabled.
There isn't one on the second computer
It is on broadband which is not "allways on" but not dial up if you can follow that

Sorry Keith for some reason I thought that you were on cable BB,I just re read some posts and youre on Plusnet so thats ADSL.
I just noticed this too :
There is "area connection 16"  and  "local area connection 18" but cannot find Lan.
I havent come across those terms before but I assume that to connect to the net on no.1 PC you have a shortcut that connects you via Area Connection 16 ?
That would make your LAN the Local Area Connection 18 (LAN is an abbreviation for local area network)
Can you find properties on either of those connections by right clicking on them and then go to the ADVANCED tab and make sure that Internet Connection Firewall is unticked on both please.

I have checked them both, neither have a firewall on

Sorry Keith I cant think of anything else to suggest at the moment other than to turn off both PCs and restart them and see if it clears itself, stranger things happen at sea they say  ???
I spent a few hours getting my network set up and no matter what I did it didnt work,I rebooted the PC a few times and I rebooted the router a few times too,no success.
I turned them both off and went to bed and when I switched on in the morning everything worked straight away without altering anything,it appears that the router and the PC needed rebooting together to sort it  :)

I wouldnt format Keith if its just the one site it cant really be much thats stopping it.It could even be a glitch on E bay that will be sorted tomorrow.
Unfortunately there arent many people around at this time of night to come up with any more ideas but there should be later on this afternoon  :-*
