Title: mouse starts running around and windows open
Post by: think_a_lot on October 01, 2003, 07:29
hello every body.
I've been looking for a forum like this one for ages! I'm so glad i hav found it because my computer is giving me a hard time. I've tried to find help and information about my problem on the site of symantec and mcafee but nowhere i found what i need. My problem is this: for more then ten days, every minute or so, when i'm using my mouse, my cursor starts to become uncontrollable. I mean, it starts running around to te left, the right, up and down, and screens, windows and menus (like "start", "software",...) open and close. Windows who were already open become small, or close or what ever. Even when i'm just typing things starts to get crazy. What is the problem. Is it my mouse,  my desktop, or what. I've scanned with mcafee end norton anti virus but nothing found. I've formatted my hard drive and reinstalled the programmes I needed, but almost immediately, problems arose again. Please help me because i'm out of inspiration and patience. Thanks in advance.
Good day to all of you. (sorry if i made some mistakes in my writing, i'm not used to wright in english)

Hi think_a_lot :welcome:

Don't worry, your English is fine. It's probably a lot better than many people on this forum ::)

I have seen similar mouse problems to yours with Logitech and Trust mice. It has always been solved by re-installing the software provided with the mouse.

Hope this helps :)

Hi think_a_lot and welcome

<<<<Don't worry, your English is fine. It's probably a lot better than many people on this forum >>>
You talking about me adept ?

You know I had a disc with my new 5 button mouse, but I just plugged it in and it worked right away, how is that? Is that my clever ME ?

Another thing worth asking is:
Is the mouse cordless? (optical or radio if so).

The reason I ask is because I've got a cordless mouse that uses an optical reciever and very strange things started happening with it. I traced it down to the energy saving lightbulbs in my computer room interfering with the signal.

To add to Dacks reply, mobile phones near PCs can do strange things even if they are not receiving or making a call at the time  :o

Michelle you may find that some of the extra features that your mouse has arent being used fully, unless you have installed the software that came with it especially if its not a Microsoft one  :)

My five button mouse works fine without the installation disc as well.  Can't see the point of loading software on if it does the job without.   ;)

hello every body , thanks for your answers. I've tried to respond earlier but i was unable to log in;
My problem has not found its end yet. It continues to make my pc-life a living hell.
I've tried to uninstall my mouse drivers but i'm, unable to do so! Nothing works. Its a simple, old fashioned mouse. I believe its called a ps/2 mouse or something like it. Its not serial. The head at the end of the cable is round. I have no clue what to do now. And to make things worse, my computer has become extremely slow. It takes for ever to open a program or even a simple window. Please help me you guys (and girls of course).

Ton anglais est meilleur que ma francaise  :)

Can you tell us what kind of PC you are using, motherboard and operating system etc please.

Have you tried running your antivirus program when your PC is in SAFE MODE ?

Hi think_a Lot,

Sometimes simple ideas might be effective. I didn't see any answer here above telling about cleaning the mouse, Did you open it taking the ball out cleaning everything in direct cotact with that ball?

Second question, Did you try another mouse to see if it works?

(I'm surprised that this matter is not replaced to "Hardware problems")

And it shouldn't be ::)

Here's the clue:-

Doesn't sound like a dirty mouse to me :P Sorry Joudi :-\

I've moved this back again for no other reason than to make it easier for think-a -lot to find it again.  If he has problems opening windows then he doesn't want to be wasting valuable time hunting for it.  It can always be moved somewhere else when it's resolved.

I'm not a techie but I quite liked Joudi's suggestions as I have always found that if I have similar problems, it's usually caused by dirt or fluff in the mouse ball.  Can you try a different mouse to see if that works?

What worries me is that your computer has started to run slow and I wonder if you have run an AdAware scan for trojans which are not detected by antivirus software?

Hello and thanks again for all you answers. I will try to respond to your questions. I've got Windows XP (pentium II) an 196 ram i think; May be I have an idea what the reason could be: i think my problem started shortly after i had downloaded a cursor who looks like a dog instead of a little arrow. But i've changed that afterwards. Maybe the site where i got that lttle doggy gave me a virus or so? I've run mcafee with the latest updates (but not yet in safe mode, so i will try this now)and have found two virusses: teekids and msblast. But the problem remains. So maybe this information can help you help me. I certainly hope so. Goodbye and have a nice day all of you. Thanks again.

Have you downloaded the Microsoft patch?  If not, you can solve your problem by visiting the following site:

I don't get how it could be anything to do with the mouse being dirty if it is opening and closing windows and whizzing all over the place though ? Still thats an easy thing to try I guess.

A couple of things, Think_a_lot.  Firstly, is it advisable to always keep your anti virus software updated, which, correct me if I'm wrong, it doesn't sound like you have done until just now.   :)  You can download a removal tool for the Blaster worm from the link below:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html

Teekids is a variant of the Blaster worm, so the tool should remove that for you as well.

Good luck!

Yes michelle, sometimes the dirt or a "HAIR" may be rolled around the ball or the small cylinders which are on direct contact with the ball. So it's really not hard to clean them all well, especially because Think_a_Lot is telling:

Its a simple, old fashioned mouse.

Quote
I've formatted my hard drive

So, may be it wasn't cleaned since ages or not at all before.

That's happened to me several times Joudi, especially when our cat was a kitten and used to walk all over my computer desk.  Cats hairs get everywhere and I often had to remove the mouse ball and clean them out.  The symptoms were a completely uncontrollable mouse pointer, not dissimilar to the description given by Think-a-lot.

Of course Clive, We all know the eternal ennemity between cats and mice.   ;D  ;)

Its very unlikely to be the mouse or a hardware problem.
A dirty or dodgy mouse would cause jerky actions it wouldnt open and close windows at random  :(
I would definately be thinking along the lines of a virus or other software problem.
The thing that puzzles me is that he has formatted and reinstalled XP so that should have sorted it unless he was reinfected on connecting to the net or from another drive or partition.
Hopefully a scan in safe mode may find it if it is.
Prior to scanning in safe mode dont forget to turn off SYSTEM RESTORE in XP as apparently it can hide in there and be reactivated when its re enabled  :doggie:

hello again. I've just cleaned my mouse. I found  like a pound of dust. Now my mouse  works great. But my problem of opening windows and such reamin. I've just ran an anti-adware-spyware  program and found 567 infected files (most of them are gator).  I've restarted my pc and the problem resurfaced again. I always keep mcafee updated. And I automatically  get updates from microsoft.  I've just read what sandra wrote, i will try it now.

Ah so that clears up the dirty mouse problem  ;)  ;D

It was the windows opening up and closing that I didn't understand, didn't realise there was two problems, or several.

That turning off restore thing worked with mine, I think it was adept told me to do that and it found one hiding in there. Little blighters

Good luck with that then think_a_lot

Don't forget who supported you in your theory Joudi.  And against formidable opponents too.  We can do without Adept and Sandra now.   ;D  Oh!  My mouse just fell apart.   ;D :(  Probably laughing.   :heehee:
Title: Re:mouse starts running around and windows open

What you forget is that a dirty mouse is merely an inconvenience as it makes its action jerky and difficult to control, the main problem here is that something is operating things that it isnt supposed to  ::)

Discounting supernatural forces like poltergeists and things like that, then my money is still on a virus or a software problem  :)

Sure ...Sure Clive, I don't forget you. If you have not supported me I would have stopped after my first post. So you have a big part of the credit.

Let's see now for his second problem (which I admit clearly that it must be to the techies), do you feel like me that what is causing it might be the mouse cable, if one tinny wire inside the principal one is a little broken in certain area to touch another tinny wire.

I know Adept and Sandra that probably I'm going too fare in my imagination. Doing that to leave for you you legal place as real techies. But I'm still thinking, why not starting with simple things first by using another mouse?

I couldn't agree with you more Joudi.  But I suspect that the remaining problems are virus related, and of course we are now on first name terms with the culprits.  The next step is to apply the patch as described in the website I quoted earlier.

I have to agree with Clive and Joudi, sometimes the simplest things are the answer to many problems. Techies, are sometimes inclined not to see the Forest for the Trees. I am not for a moment thinking of our esteemed techies.  ;)

Yes I agree with you Lona, some of them are :P

I still think the OP has a problem with the mouse drivers ::)
