Title: Edge (New version)
Post by: Den on July 28, 2019, 16:27
I decided to try the New version of Edge today and downloaded it from the Microsoft site.

First impressions are , very very fast indeed. It will take a bit to get used to the new layout but very impressed so far.

Will report back as I get used to it.

I have a nervous disposition so I try to avoid Microsoft products.   :o:

So far so good. It's really nice to use and very fast indeed.

I like the layout far more than Edge, IE or Chrome and so far I can not find anything to dislike.   ;D

Today Microsoft released the Beta version of Edge which they say is even more stable than the versions released up to now.

I downloaded it and it seems really nice indeed.  :D

You are definitely a brave pioneer Den.

I've been using the New Edge for a month now and can not find anything to dislike.  8-)

Edge is now in it's final stages and on the next update is the finished version.

I still can't find anything to dislike and would urge everyone to start using it over the next few weeks. If you like Chrome you will love Edge.  :D

"Love" and "Microsoft" don't sit happily in the same sentence Den.  The word "Fear" fits better.

Micro$oft never do a 'finished' version of anything!  If they finally get Edge working, they'll let you have it for a while, then you'll be involuntarily testing the next version.   ::)

Have you tried the new version of Edge yet Simon or are you just assuming it's not very good?

I have been using since July and have had no problems at all. The version out now is more or less the finished product and it's so fast and clean with no glitches.  ;D

I have tried it, Den, but admittedly not for any length of time. Occasionally a website won't open in my usual browser so I use Edge as an alternative.  However, I often find that Edge doesn't display websites correctly, so I've yet to be convinced that it's worth switching to, and I have no real desire to change from my current browser.

I am not asking you to try Edge I want you to try the New Version which is based on Chrome. It's in the final beta stage and will replace Edge on January 15th 2020. :D

It's a huge coincidence that both Edge users subscribe to this forum.   ;D

The new Edge is completely different to the one released. I have been using the Beta version for ages and it just keeps getting better and better.

Either download the Beta version now or wait until January 15th 2020 and it will be offered by Microsoft to all.  8-)

Only another 11 days to go then you will all be able to try it out.

Or is this going to be the same as Windows 10, don't try it because it's not going to be as good as XP or even Windows 10 so therefore it's no good.  :)x

I have used every browser known to man and The new Edge browser is the best and fastest ever. Don't knock it until you have tried it over a period of time.  ;D

I tried it on my phone and it was useless as it doesn't automatically zoom in on the text.

Try it on a computer but leave it until 15th January now, I've been using the beta version and it's so much better than the normal Edge.  8-)

The new Edge is released this week. Before you slag it off read the review in Web User magazine or try it yourself, it's amazing.  ;D

Yes it is and I think that it is the best browser I have ever used and Microsoft have finally got it right. It is released this week as part of the monthly update.

I buy Web User and Computer Active every month, great magazines.  ;D

I very nearly upgraded my Windows 7 PC to Windows 10 last night, having seen that this can still ("unofficially") be done for free, if you take the option to keep all files and apps.  The reason I didn't go through with it is because it took about an hour to download, and then another half an hour to to sort itself out, by which time it was getting late and I didn't want it to happen and then not have the time to put things right afterwards.

You need to do this. For a security reason.

I doubt Windows 7 is going to crumble into pieces immediately.  Mine is fully patched up to date, so I'm not too worried in the short term.

Doesn't take long for a hack...

Well, I've upgraded to Windows 10.  Took 2½ hours to complete.  It finally booted up to my usual Desktop, albeit with different fonts, and I even managed to reset it to my old Theme, but that's as far as I've got for the moment.  Looks at first glance like everything is as it should be.

Hopefully it will look and run like windows 7...well until the compulsory, seemingly untested but unavoidable updates begin  :o:

Linux Mint is very good  :D

I was up till 1:00 this morning tweaking, but I think I've got it as I want it now.  I've checked all my programs and apart from Adobe Audition which seems to be having a bit of a hissy fit, everything seems to be working.

It is very good indeed.  The problem from my point of view is that none of its graphics software holds a candle to software being produced commercially for Windows OS.

I have an old 32 bit laptop that I use very little but which was supplied with Vista.  I replaced that with Mint a couple of years ago when Vista became obsolete; it is still a very capable little machine so long as I stick to the Gimp, Inkscape and Shotcut.

One thing I like about Mint is it allows you to install it as an option in a dual boot system (which is what I initially did, also on a Vista pc), so you can get best (or worst) of both worlds.

You can't do that so easily now with UEFI and secure systems....  I just run a VM inside
