Title: BT upgrades speed for Infinity fibre broadband
Post by: Clive on April 12, 2012, 20:42
BT Retail has turned up the speeds on its Infinity fibre broadband packages, with some customers in line for a free upgrade that will double their bandwidth.

The move follows a network upgrade to take advantage of VDSL2 technology to deliver broadband signals from fibre cabinets used in BT's fibre-to-the-cabinet infrastructure to customers' homes.
According to the company, subscribers to the Infinity 2 package will see speeds doubled to 76Mbits/sec from up to 38Mbits/sec - formerly described as 40Mbits/sec, before the recent advertising clampdown.
Many providers have forgotten about the importance of fast upload speeds.

BT is locked in a speeds battle with fibre rival Virgin Media, which also recently announced a network upgrade to double its speeds. However, BT claimed it now offers faster upload speeds than Virgin.
Infinity 1 customers will see upload speeds increased from 1.9Mbits/sec to 9.5Mbits/sec, while Option users will get a boost to 19Mbits/sec, which BT said was the fastest upload rate available in the UK.
The company said its lowest Infinity option now compared favourably with Virgin's 30Mbits/sec offering because it boasted significantly faster uploads than the cable provider's 2-3Mbits/sec.
“Many providers have forgotten about the importance of fast upload speeds,” said John Petter, managing director for BT Consumer. “BT believes that fast upstream speeds are vital given how people now use the internet and so we are providing the UK’s fastest upload speed.”

According to BT, new customers and people switching to Infinity from other BT packages will automatically get the new speeds from tomorrow, while current Infinity subscribers will qualify for a free upgrade by starting a new contract.

The technology boost was driven by an upgrade to BT's wholesale network, and will also be available to other ISPs, with TalkTalk, among others, already accepting pre-orders for the faster services.

A friend of mine is being upgraded tomorrow for an extra £2.50 a month.  BT promised him 40 Meg and a full rewire.
