Title: Cannot access websites
Post by: Clive on November 09, 2002, 13:09
For some reason I can no longer access certain Yahoo websites which are on my favourites list.  Most of Yahoo is readily available, but I am getting "Page not Found" on the ones I really need.

I always give in to temptation to start fiddling with things if I can't get a web page, but 99% of the time, it's just a temporary fault with the website, so I'm slowly learning to leave well alone and try again later.

Perhaps the pages have moved, Clive?  Maybe you could find them via the Yahoo menus?

I know that the websites are there as I just went up to my local library. I came back and I can't access them via the Yahoo menus either.  It's the same with both machines on my network.  Weird or what?

Clive do you want to post the URL of the site/s you are trying to access (unless theyre porn ones of course)  ;)
So we can see if we can get them ok  :-*

This long URL (http://rd.yahoo.com/search/diy/fc/astronomy/*http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/Science/Astronomy_and_Space_News)

or: http://dir.yahoo.com/Science/Astronomy/     then the link Astronomy and Space News at the top

/me fixed the URL so that it doesn't break the page formatting ;)

It looks like the site is down Clive as it doesnt work for me either  :-*

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

Just as I was hoping for some juicy stuff too  ;)

Second one works but not the link from it Clive  :-*

I am getting closer to the problem.    I just tried it using a 56K modem and it works perfectly ok.  It just wont work with ADSL.  How can that be?

Maybe a routing problem Clive but I would have thought whether on ADSL or on dial up it would tie up with the same servers at some point  ???
Maybe the plebs on 56K have found a way to put a spanner in the works for the lucky few of us on BB  ;)

Yes, I forgot you are on broadband too.   ;D  This is becoming very curious isn't it?

To quote alice in wonderland " Curiouser and curiouser "
 ;D

Can you access them ok Simon?

The second one, yes, and the link to the Newsey bit, but the first one I just get "The requested URL /search/diy/fc/astronomy/ was not found on this server."  That would indicate to me that it's been removed.

Maybe the first url was just the result of a "not found" page so we should ignore that one.  I wonder if it's anything to do with the firewall built into the router?

I couldn't access Yahoo Messemger either until I changed the preferences to "Firewall No proxies"

I think The Saint is the one to call on here, Clive!   ;D

Yes, it must be a setting needs changing although even that doesn't make any sense to me!  ;D

Any chance of editing that post above, Clive, to get this page back to it's normal size?   :)

It IS normal size to me Simon!   ;D  I haven't done anything Guv.   ;D

For what it's worth, I get a 'Page Not Found' for the first of Clive's links, but the second one works just fine.

Thanks for trying Rodders.  I've been trying to access a lot of other Yahoo links as well but a lot of them are the same in that they don't appear to work.  I'm not sure why my system has chosen to single out Yahoo.   ;D

Page 1 is wide for me too.  Link 1 doesn't work, link 2 does. I'm on adsl through a usb modem, not a router

Solved!!  The problem was that the router has a built in firewall and I was also running Zone Alarm.  I shut Zone Alarm down and I can now access that website.   ;D  Why it just picked on certain websites I don't know.

Probably talking out of my hat here, but is Zone Alarm sensitive to cookies?

I've found that ZA can sometimes err on the side of caution.  I recommend uninstalling and then reinstalling without saving your previous settings to put ZA's hat back on straight.  Your Router's FW may be sufficient on its own, without needing ZA anymore, of course.  I would seek expert opinion in that regard.

grc.com said it was fully stealthed Rodders. I couldn't remember the addresses of the other checking sites at the time.

Could someone remind me?  ;D

I've just run Shields Up with ZA disabled and I'm in full stealth mode.  Obviously the router's firewall is sufficient by itself so I'll remove ZA from my system altogether.

Another stealth test can be found at http://www.dslreports.com/tools

GRC's LeakTest (http://grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm) is the biggie, Adept, but just I'm wondering what I did with the other two bookmarks.  Wait.  Out.

Added:  Back again and Simon's got one of them, but I think I may have zapped the other one during a recent tidy-up.  I'm fairly sure it originally came via a link on Emeric Miszty's immensely valuable site, here (http://www.uksecurityonline.com/index5.php).

(LeakTest link now fixed, *duh!*)

DSL Reports came back with:

Conclusion: Healthy Setup! We could detect nothing interesting on any of the default ports on your IP address. Your computer appears to be a hard target. Well done!
ALL TCP
FILTERED No response (open or closed) to an open request was received.
ALL UDP
FILTERED No response (open or closed) to an open request was received.

However, it was a different story with GRC's leaktest.  It just barged through my firewall shouting "out of my way!"

Maybe I will have to keep ZA and just turn it off when I want to access that website.

ZA stops it dead in its tracks.   ;D  ;D  ;D

I'm not sure, but I think the Vigor Firewall is incoming rather than outgoing.

In that case it's best to run ZA as well just in case you get infected with a trojan.
