Oct Windows update is now.
Pick a spare 2 hours for this one, but it's well worth it. ;D
-
Thanks Den. I think I can delay it for a few months since I have Windows Pro.
-
It actually improves lots of things including Edge so it well worth doing.
-
Edge is already a pretty good browser - this sounds promising :)
-
Having just seen this video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZNOE4qSaDc ) I won't be seeking to update Windows 10 any time soon!
-
What a bunch of Muppets! This is the reason I prefer to wait for 6 months before accepting the updates.
-
In my experience if you don't update there is a small chance of some malware knacking your computer. If you do update there's a big chance of the update knacking your computer. These days I try avoid them at all costs which is why I still use win 7 to make the avoidance a lot easier
-
Sounds a wise plan to me Dave.
-
It must be me :D On both my desktop and laptop I have had no problems with the update at all. Edge now runs better than ever and I don't seem to have lost any files.
-
Apparently Microsoft has pulled the update so can all sleep soundly again. Until the next time of course. ::)
-
So, when it's re-released, Den may have to get it again. ;D
-
If he can find his files.
-
My laptop was set to update automatically, so on Tuesday it automatically deleted my photos and docs. Now I just want to stab to death every **** who works for Microsoft.
-
:ouch2:
-
I wonder if they are really deleted or just hidden? Could they be found in the recycle bin? Might they reappear when the update is updated? :dunno:
-
I feel so lucky, all these problems and they seem to pass me by. :D
-
Windows 10 update has now been released fully plus other updates. ;D
-
-
It totally nuked my Asus laptop which now refuses to boot up. I only threw out the rescue disks a week or so previously. Good timing eh?
-
Honestly, they really should be facing a major litigation suit, with the amount of damage they have caused to people's computers.
-
The only thing I used it for was to let the grandchildren play games. Hence my cavalier attitude with the rescue disks.
-
I'm not going to do it. Bl00dy pooter might have a mind of its own but I'm not going to do it.
:x:
-
Be resolute Gill! I've delayed my PC Specialist machine as I don't want to lose that one too.
-
Well, my laptop appears to be playing hard to get. I switched it on at 4pm this afternoon, with the intention of leaving it on all evening in case it wanted to download anything, so that it might actually be ready to use when I wanted to, but when I checked it at 8pm, the WiFi had not connected, so it had just sat there doing nothing but consume electricity for 4 hours.
That said, I think I've delayed the updates, so it probably wouldn't have gone on a suicide mission to download the latest Windows 10 anyway.
-
I've switched off automatic updates and, since the last feature update was 26 May 2018, I'm feeling smug. Now all I have to do is remember to update it manually after the guinea pigs have tested it out for me. That'll probably be when Micro$soft announces the next update.
-
Another method is to tell your machine you are using a metered connection. ;)

W10 tends to ignore that setting when it really wants to update stuff, i 've tried it to no avail ':|

W10 tends to ignore the user at any other time as well!

Very true. :-X
I've started using Linux Mint in preparation for my windows 7 pc packing in. It looks a bit dated and I haven't really got my head around it yet, but it's up and running and doesn't update when it wants to
-
That seems a good result! :D I foresee someone inventing a new OS and MS disappearing. It can't go on screwing up people's computers.

I've heard there's lots of holes in it. :)x

But like a donut they are very easy to fill

Linux Mint is smashing. If it wasn't for the fact that my favourite programs only operate on Windoze I'd use it regularly.

This might help you in that regard
What I have found other than adobe flash which doesn't do well in Mint most other programs have alternatives
https://linuxappfinder.com/alternatives (https://linuxappfinder.com/alternatives)

For help using commands in a terminal
I use this program it has most of the most used commands in it

That's useful Davy, thanks
-
Both desktop and laptop still running well after update. ;D
-
That alternatives page is very helpful, Davy. Thanks. Although many Linux programs are now also compatible with Windoze I'm still attracted to commercial Windows programs for work with graphics and video. They have a real edge over Open Source programs.

You must spend all your time doing updates Davy. ;D
-
I only update as I user them Doesn't take very long only a few minutes
My windows 7 and XP pro only do security updates now
-
Having fought it off as long as possible, the Oct update has finally landed on my W10 laptop. The upgrade seems to have gone OK (I went out for the day and left it to it), but why does it have to reset all the fonts? Very annoying!
-
:omg: That's going to give me nightmares.
-
Oh, so that's why I've had to reset the fonts in all my document templates.
Thank you, Microsh*t. >:(
-
The other free gift is that it always disables System Restore. :woot:
