Do a spyware scan, Michelle, with something like Super Anti Spyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispyware.html) and / or Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php).  It sounds like you might have inherited something which is hogging your processing power.  Have you tried Ctrl+Alt+Del to look in Task Manager, to see if anything is running at 90% or above?

Check Task Manager.  Something must be hogging resources.  Have you looked in Add / Remove Programs for anything new or suspicious?  Try Safe Mode, and see if that helps.

did a scan and cleaner in safe mode ........... task manager brings up nothing..

Reinstall IE8?  Or, better still, try Firefox.  Is this only happening when you use your browser?

I'm off to bed now, but maybe Sandra will have some ideas later?

I don't know if this is possible, as I haven't used IE for years, but can you uninstall IE8 and reinstall IE7?  Sorry, with the lack of other ideas, I'm stabbing in the dark a bit, Michelle.

I had a chat with Michelle on mesenger last night and we tried running sfc /scannow and then reinstalling IE8 using the ie.inf inside the windows folder that copied it over from her XP CD.
Neither of those worked.   :dunno:

She does have 75 processes running according to Task Manager  :o

Ouch. Anything that you could identify as a miscreant, Sandra?
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Sandra on February 21, 2009, 13:25
Her pc was running so slow and it was getting late so we didnt have time to analyse which processes they were, it would have been nice to have had a screenshot if you can manage to do one and post it here Michelle  :)

She did say that none of them seemed to be using much of the cpu/ram though.

I wonder if a posted log from a HijackThis (http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html) scan would reveal anything?
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Sandra on February 21, 2009, 13:34
Its worth a try as I think theres something definately running that shouldnt be.
The processes would be a good start though and possibly easier to interpret.

I note HJT now seems to be stabled with Trend Micro, but it's still free, and you can submit a log for analysis.

Yes thanks for all of your help last night sandra........... hey i can type, this is a test - i ran a few more scans and nothing, then i updated (?) the ATI driver although when I restarted the computer it said, The Catalyst control centre isn't support by this driver please update it?  so thats odd. I'm not sure if that matters. Do I need the control centre.  Here we go its getting unresponsive again - pfff

I wouldn't like to guess any further, Michelle, as it may do more harm than good.  :(
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Rik on February 21, 2009, 17:08
You don't really need it, Michelle. It would be worth running MSConfig, and trying the diagnostic startup, if that helps, then go to the selective startup option and disable everything which isn't MS, restoring stuff one at a time until you have problems.
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Michelle on February 21, 2009, 17:08
Well thanks for your suggestions simon, its not as bad now, which is weird? It maybe go again lets see ...........

oh i just saw some more posts there............ missed them just now.

I'd started in diagnostic start up when i was talking, or trying to talk with sandra, :(
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Rik on February 21, 2009, 17:19
If that didn't help, then I'd be thinking along the lines of an OS re-install, Michelle, it might be quicker than trying to track the problem.

Look at the additional option at the bottom of the reply box - it won't work if you're using quick reply though.
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Simon on February 21, 2009, 17:21
In the normal reply screen (not the Quick Reply box) click Additional Options, and you can attach an image, Michelle.

I assume you've tried a System Restore, to before this started happening?

(And what Rik said).  ;)

In which case, if it were me, I would probably restore back again, then reinstall IE8.

it wouldn't let me reinstall either at that date, but maybe i could use another date.......... mind you its still working.
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Rik on February 21, 2009, 17:56
That number of processes is still very high, Michelle, and you need to examine the system to see what they all belong to. The quickest way would probably be by disabling them using MSConfig, then seeing what won't work.

Michelle, TeaTimer is part of Spybot Search & Destroy.  Go into the Spybot options, and try turning TeaTimer off.  It may be conflicting with Super Anti Spyware, or your other security.

alot of them are on there 2 or 3 times?? is that normal? like scvhost.eve.......

Post by: Simon on February 21, 2009, 17:58
By the way, in case there's any confusion, the 250Kb attachment limit is the file size, not the actual size of the image, yes?

That's usually OK, but 'iexplore.exe' (IE) shouldn't be running twice, as far as I am aware.

lol oh yes thanks simon, although that wouldn't be this problem but if i don't need it, it can go.. I'm thinking its the 2 iexplores ppl saying its trojan.. typingbad :(

whooooooooooops!!!!!!!!!

I thought i'd try end process on one of them and see what happened ........ ie closed they both went from task mgr and when i opened ie again it put 4 in there!
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Rik on February 21, 2009, 18:30
I think you really need to clean out the machine by using the selective startup option in MSConfig, Michelle. Stop everything which isn't MS, and see what happens then.
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Simon on February 21, 2009, 18:34
Having done some Googling, it seems 'iexplore.exe' could be a trojan.  Prevx (http://www.prevx.com/) has been recommended to remove it, but I can't understand how the others you've tried have failed to.
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Michelle on February 21, 2009, 18:41
yes i saw that too simon, I've done them all but not in safemode, oh i did do one in safemode
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Simon on February 21, 2009, 18:59
Some malware can only be removed if it's not running, hence the need to run the scanners in safe mode.  I would try that first, Michelle, and / or Rik's suggestion, but if it's a 'hidden' trojan, it may not appear in MSConfig.
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Rik on February 21, 2009, 19:06
I suspect a re-install may be the fastest way to fix this. :(
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Michelle on February 21, 2009, 19:20
nooooooooooooo there must be another way lol

i tired that diagnostic one - i'd not done that one i'd done selective start up - anyway i didn't know what i needed to get the internet working so i had to come out again, but the 2 iexplores were still there.

taskmgr looks better though ! lol

oh something else happens sometimes too - when i start pc a tab pops up at the bottom "led hotkey keyboard" it seems to have been doing it since i got this problem.
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Simon on February 21, 2009, 19:39
Well, again, nothing conclusive from Googling, but it could be a keylogger, so unless you've recently installed some new keyboard software, it needs to be got rid of.

Are you using AVG, by any chance?
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Michelle on February 21, 2009, 19:42
yes i am....... is it no good, i was gonna get rid of it cos they suggest you use virgins free stuff......... its ok now so ive still not scanned lol
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Michelle on February 21, 2009, 23:27
Hi again, i did 4 scans in safemode and nothing but a few cookies - but i did find out that yontoo was enabled again in add ons........ which was where the problems started.

Also it seems that iexplore is probably ok...... I've been reading about it, and like anything a virus can pretend to be it. Anyway so far so good, it hasn't slowed yet but it does seem to take a while. I'm hoping it was yontoo.
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Michelle on February 22, 2009, 12:41
Well after 24hrs of checking, it seems it was just yontoo. All still fine !     Yontoo shows in control panel in safe mode but not in normal so i didn't see it here.

So any idea's what things i can get rid of running in the task manager please?
Title: Re: yontoo or java or ie8 ? heelp
Post by: Rik on February 22, 2009, 12:54
It depends on what you want to work, Michelle. I tend to stop help apps loading at startup (they often just serve to load the main app faster), I then go to the services tab in MSConfig and hide all MS services. Then I scroll through killing off what I don't want or need, eg the ATI hot key poller, Bonjour service, Isposure agent and so on. If something stops working, it's a moment to just turn that service on again.
