Title: Antivirus Software
Post by: Adept on November 17, 2002, 18:49
Go here (http://www.pc-pals.com/antivirus.htm) for a list of the currently available Antivirus software.

If you know of any other software which is not not listed here, please add to this thread with any details you have and we will update the web page. Similarly, you can let us know of a version update by adding a comment.

hi all

what anti-virus software do you recommend ?

i want something that sits quietly in the background is easy to work with.

and free  ;D ;D ;D

i cant remember what i had before the last format. when you clicked the icon you got a graph and a list of things below that were allowed or not, but it was quite good.

can any of you remind me what that may be or any other recommendations. ;) ;)

Camstop, there's a link in the first post in this thread that lists the available options.

Go here (http://www.pc-pals.com/antivirus.htm) for a list of the currently available Antivirus software.

I would personally recommend Norton, but if you want a free one, many people find AVG very good.  :)

Hi Camstop,I have only used Norton anti virus and have never had a problem so far  ::) ( Probably get a really nasty one now  ??? )
The one you describe isnt one I have seen from what I can remember.
I also use Norton personal firewall, which also seems to work well and is easy to set up and configure  :-*

Hi Camstop,

heres a really good deal, Norton System Works 2003 only £20

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2077731816

The seller is straight, I bought the 2002 from him about a month back for £12. Mine did not come in a box or with a maunal but it is a genuine Norton disk not a copy.

You get Norton Utilities, Ghost, and Anti Virus, I was using McAfee before, but I rate Norton.

But the really best bit is you get Roxia 'GoBack' as well. Great for when you cock something up with a bad download or you muck up the registary or delete something by mistake. You just 'GoBack' to a boot up or pre install time before the cock up, dead simple, all sorted in two ticks.

catch

PS. My purchase was a 'Buy it' and I have just noticed this is a 'Auction' but he has 100 copies and only 19 bidders so far, and it ends at about 6.30 pm today

Norton AV 2002 or 2003 dont get the system works it will just eat up more resouces and really does not have any benifits to your system. The Norton AV by its self is great its all I use and its all we recommend or sell to our customers at the office.

I'm using Norton Anti-Virus and Zonealarm [free] and I'm happy with them both. But when the time comes to fork out for a Norton update I will go for AVG. I downloaded it on to a friends PC and it looks a fine piece of software.

Yes, I baulked at forking out another £30 to renew Norton's when Mrs Clive's expired a few months ago.  I downloaded AVG for her and found it to be very easy to configure and use.  It was set on automatic update and it updated at around the same frequency as the Norton's installed on my own computer.  However, when Mrs Clive's machine became sick and a clean installation of XP was necessary, Norton's forgot that it had been previously installed so she can get another year out of it.   ;D

I installed it today and its running fine.

The user interface isn't as user friendly as Grisofts AVG but it seems to be doing the trick. :)

Just a quick update on antivir (http://www.free-av.com).

Only installed one day already one update of the virus definition file.

It has also renamed incoming .exe attachments as .exe.safe after it scanned them. EDIT: No it isn't, that'll be the firewall

So far so good  ;)

AVG is still updating and working fine. However, should an alternative become necessary, the fact that free-av is made in Germany (a by-word for efficiency) it now tops my list ahead of Norman AV.

I've been running avast! http://www.avast.com/ (http://www.avast.com/) anti virus for about a week now. The home version's free.
I'd been happy with AVG free version for ages but decided to play with this prog.
So far its good, it found a trojan with the initial scan - I assume AVG missed it, it was spyware, I think. ???

Compared to AVG theres a lot more settings to fiddle with. Its updated 3 times so far.
It integrates with Outlook and theres a wizard
which links it to Outlook Express.
It picked up Swen twice in emails yesterday!!!

Maybe you could add it to your list and I'd be very interested to hear if anyone else here has tried it.

Cheers

How about Trend Micro Internet Security? This is updated PC Cillin, and is available from about £19-00 to £38-00. This Anti Virus incorporates a firewall built in and frequent updates. It also scans for Spyware and includes a Spam Filter. I have used PC Cillin before, but this is far superior. The firewall passes all tests for hackers etc by Symantic and Gibson sites and is easy as it sets itself. Available from C/Net or direct-GOOD!

I could swear that I recently saw a completely free full version of this software on a cover disk.  It is probably a previous version, but as I tend to err on the side of caution and use software that is at least one version old (so as to avoid bugs, conflicts, crashes etc that are often associated with unstable new versions) I might see if I can find it later, as I'm putting together an oldish (but improved) PC for my son, and an all-in-one security package would save me from a lot of faffing about.

:thanks:  Delgado.

This is a good Antivirus. The Firewall is a version of Zone Alarm,  and the combination works well together. I dont think I would buy it, but the free years sub cant be bad. I have tried all the Anti Virus progs on the market, and still keep going back to Norton. I am now running Norton 2004 with Norton Firewall 2003. If you want a paid prog I would stick to Norton. Incidentally, dont upgrade your Zone Alarm to version 5 - stick to version 4. Zone Alarm 5 has bad conflict problems with other Anti Virus progs such as Norton or McAfee. Zone Labs admit this and are working on it.

Zone Alarm Internet Security is an all in one programme as you say, but I am talking about Zone alarm 5 Firewall. The Internet Security suite is Zone alarm 5 incorporated with E-Z Trust Anti Virus, but Zone Alarm Pro and free versions are still available as plain firewalls. Its the version 5 firewall that seems to be causing the problems. If you fancy using the suite, why not try a free trial? I still prefer Norton with Norton Firewall. Good Luck ! The E-Z Antivirus free trial for one year is basically the same as the new Zone alarm suite-it contains a version of Zone Alarm and E-Z Anti Virus. Hope all this is clear.

Have you thought about Avast (http://www.avast.com/index.html), Lona?  Not used it myself, but some people speak well of it.  The only thing with the free ones is that some of them are not self updating, so you have to remember to manually update them every day.

Lona I can back up Delgardo's comments, I'm using Norton Antivirus 2003 along side ZoneAlarm version 3.7.2002.

And I've never experianced any connection problems, nor have I ever been infected by a virus. Though I have had quite a few virus infected emails attempt to gain access.

Hello all,

I'm a brand-spanking new member. Looks like a cool community here.  In any event, I have a question regarding Norton AV.  I'm having problems getting live update to work.  I keep getting an error msg.  So, I wrote to Symantec and they said to uninstall everything, which I did.  However, when I try to reinstall, I still get an error msg on the liveupdate part, so my program won't update.  I currently have no firewall products installed on my machine, so I don't think there are any conflicts there.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Martin

PS: Following is what NAV tech support wrote to me -

Hi Martin,

Welcome back to Symantec Online Technical Support.

In your message you wrote:
>when I tried to reinstall NAV 2004, an error msg appeared saying the installation had failed. I tried clicking on retry to no avail. Do you think that I possibly have a corrupted CD?

Martin, this issue does not occur due to corrupt Norton AntiVirus (NAV) CD. In some cases, this issue occurs due to virus. In some cases, this issue can occur if Microsoft Windows Installer is not properly registered. Please refer to the following document from our Online Knowledge Base for the steps to resolve the issue:

Although highly recommended (and the only one I wil use) I must warn anyone considering it to avoid AVG Free Edition at the moment.  I have just finished downloading (from the AVG website) and installing only my second update since around Easter time, as every time I try to use the built-in updater it fails to connect and gives me a message and link to get it from the website.  This is unacceptable.  It is not as if I have a corrupt copy.  I did a format a few weeks ago (I format twice a year and start with a clean system) and got a new copy of the setup file, but it continued to refuse to update.  For once, I cannot blame the firewall, as I had Sygate Pro before the format and now have the Kerio original program and it continues to misbehave regardless.

I can't comment on the paid-for AVG, as I won't pay for programs if there is a free alternative.  However, I suspect that AVG is so popular that the company's server cannot cope.

Hi Martin,

Assuming you haven't any other Symantec products installed, try removing the Symantec folder from C:\Program Files, before trying to install NAV.  Not being funny, but is it a genuine copy you are trying to install?  I believe NAV 2004 has some sort of 'activation' procedure, similar to Windows XP, but I would have thought the error message would have been more specific, if that was the problem.

Hi Martin and  :welcome:

If you previously had NAV installed as an older version you have to be sure you have deleted all the old files from your system before installing newer version. :)

I've had similar problems but eventually got new version installed. :D

Here (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606) is a Symantec article on removing troublesome previous installations.  I haven't read it all, but hopefully it might help.  There is a reference to NAV 2004 at the bottom.

Found this free anti-virus:

http://www.free-av.com/ (http://www.free-av.com/)

Not sure if you want to add it to your lists.

DJ1UK

I use it and it seems to work better than AVG

I have etrust antivirus pre-installed on this new pc but it's only a 60 day trial version.

Does anybody have any opinions on this software as I was thinking of getting it when my 60 day trial is up. :)

I asked about that myself a while ago, Lona.  I'll try to find the thread for you.  I think they are a clone of Zone Alarm, if I remember correctly, or it may be something else....  :-\

It's because you are using a version which they no longer support Jaminxz.  All you have to do is download the latest version which is AVG7.5 and normal service will be restored.  see http://www.pc-pals.com/smf/index.php?topic=20681.0

Download, install, update and select Full Scan.
Remove all infections that it finds after scan.

Spybot S&D:

Download, install, update and Immunize, then click 'Check for problems' then when complete select all and then 'Fix Checked'

Perfect Optimizer -- Registry Cleaner:

:welcome:

I think Spybot S&D is a little outdated now, and doesn't update frequently enough for my liking.  Malwarebytes appears to be a good product, and has been recommended by several forum members.  Never used Perfect Optimizer, but I am always wary of this type of program, as some registry cleaners can do more harm than good.

I had been using AVG 8.5 which I would have recommended to all. Forced to change to AVG 9.Internet and PC slowed down to crawl.
AVG 9 has a major problem, I  have deleated it and now use Avast.

I've heard better things about Avast than I have about AVG. :)
