Title: Web Browser THE BEST ?
Post by: Tony on September 18, 2003, 15:24
Ah ah, now I have got your attention,

I keep hearing Simon going on [ in the best possible taste, might I add ;)] about Mozilla, and Adept mentions Opera web browsers.

So I thought, how about a thread for those who use other browsers other than IE:6 or earlier versions, to put the case for their favourite.

Because I'm just thinking, maybe having another brower on your PC as well as IE:6, aint a bad idea. I mean if for instance your having a prob with IE:6, or at least you put it down to IE:6, you can use the other browser. And if you like it, make it your default browser.

Come on lads, get posting ::)

Come on lads, get posting ::)

Is this a male only thread then Tony ::)

In case it isnt I will just add that I use IE6 and as it seems to do all that I want without the extra clutter I have seen on the other browsers then I will stick with it for now :P

Yes, there are a lot of browsers out there, the cream of the crop seem to have multiple page browsing and built in popup blockers etc etc...

I personally prefer to have the minimal amount of rubbish on my machine, and since IE is integrated, I stick with that. There isn't anything I haven't been able to do ... yet, and until it happens, I'm not bothering about it.

I'd be interested in seeing the 'votes' tho'.

Well, I would recommend Mozilla 1.4 (http://www.mozilla.org/) for the following reasons:

1. It's free, with no ads (unlike Opera).

2. It is faster than IE (in my opinion), and suffers less crashes. Also, it doesn't suffer from MS Updates!

3. It has a built in Pop Up Stopper, Cookie Manager, Download Manager, Mail Client, HTML Editor, Form Filler, and may other features, which you have to use third party programs for in IE.

4. You can use Tabbed Browsing, and (with the relevant plug-in), Mouse Gestures, if you wish to.

5. You can have fun trying out the hundreds of add-ons / extensions / plug-ins available, if you like tinkering.

6. If you c**k it up, you can easily re-install it without losing any of your settings.

7. There is no index.dat file to worry about, if you value your surfing privacy. Wiping of cache / cookies can be done easily.

8. The layout is much simpler, and less cluttered than IE, although you have the choice of using an extremely competant sidebar, if that's your thing.

9. You can use Google as your default search engine.

10. Mozilla is much more configurable than IE. You can choose from a selection of different skins, and icon packs, to make the browser as personal as you like. All the features, such as Tabbed Browsing, Sidebar, Site Navigation Bar, plus other toolbars and featuers are easily turn on and offable. If you like tinkering, this is the browser for you, but it can also be as simple as you like.

That concludes my case for Mozilla 1.4. Go on, try it... I dare you! ;D ;D

There's even a forum (http://forums.mozillazine.org/index.php) for Mozilla users, if you can't find your answers here, of course! ;)

Also in development is the Firebird browser and Thunderbird mail clients, which are basically stripped down, stand alone versions of Mozilla.

Oh, and one more thing - if you create a long post on here, and the forum freezes as you post it, when you refresh, you don't lose all your text!!

Ads? What ads? I never see any ads. :baad:

My preferred browser is Opera, but recently I downloaded Mozilla. Although Mozilla is very unlikely to take over from Opera as my favourite browser, I can recommend both of them. It's just a shame that Internet Explorer cannot be uninstalled/removed without risking problems with the operating system, because I would have got rid of it long ago.

There isn't anything that I don't like about Mozilla, Simon. It's just that I've been using Opera since version 3 and am so comfortable with it I can't see any point in changing. :)

I would install and try both browsers, if you can spare the download time. You could also purchase the latest PC-Pro magazine which has both browsers on its cover-disk.

A browser is a very personal thing. I have really tried to like Mozilla because technically (and financially), it is superior browser. But try as I might, I just don't get on with it. Opera suits me perfectly.

So my advice is try them both. You'll like one or the other because they are both way better than IE6 :)

Just a word of advice for prospective Mozilla users - make sure you get version 1.4, as anything later is still in beta testing. Also, the default skin is horrible. Go to View > Apply Theme and tick Modern, for a much nicer skin. ;)

One other thing - when you install, you get options as to which components to install. You can choose Browser Only, or Full Installation, or Custom. I choose Custom, and just install the Browser and Mail Client. Not the other bits.
Title: Re:Web Browser THE BEST ?

It may be 13MB, Lona, but how many megabytes of patches do you think you will have to apply to Internet Explorer between now and Christmas? I chose browser only, because if there is one thing I could praise Microsoft for it is the Outlook Express mail client. I have tried the full-blown Outlook 2000, Pegasus and Eudora, but I always return to Outlook Express. It's simple and does everything I want it to do.

Anyone thinking of trying Opera, I would start with version 6.06 without Java. It's only around 3.5MB and I have found it to be the most stable version Opera has released. In fact, I can't remember when it last crashed. :)

OK I found out how to do that OK, hey I like the save password option, handy for logging in here for instance.

I guess the more you use it the better you like it, I like how you can collapse the toolbars. As I have three monitors I can have IE:6 and Mozzila on different screens. Not that you would want too normally, but they do not conflict with each other whilst running at the same time. And unlike since I went onto IE:6, it does not show the icons on the lefthand side of Pal home page, Mozzila shows em OK. I had to down load Macromedia Flash player to be able to see and hear :-\ sigs, maybe that was a mistake ;D

Have you changed skins, Tony, or have you still got the horrible traffic lights?

View > Apply Theme > Modern, or if you want to be adventurous, Get More Themes. ;)

When you go through Edit > Preferences, you'll be able to set your Home Page, and Default Search Engine. Have fun - I know you'll like it! ;) ;D

P.S If you go to View > Show / Hide, you can get rid of the Toolbars all together.

Yes, you can set Moz to zap cookies at the end of each session. I set mine to one day, otherwise you keep having to log into Pals. :)

Told you it was good, Tony! Have you tried the pop up stopper? Better than any of the ones you can use with IE. :D :D

Must set mine, pity you cannot select cookies to ignore getting zapped.

Not tried the pop up stopper yet.

Skin, gone for Lo-Fi, nice and crisp and clear

Well guys I have Mozilla set up and still looking at all the features. I had a little problem logging into outlook express as it kept asking for all my email passwords where before I didn't need to. I couldn't get my hotmail acccount to download and had to do it via web. Outlook express wouldn't accept hotmail password yet I got in no bother through web but only with IE6. I had absolutely no problem signing in to msn chat. Apart from that I like it and it is much faster. Thanks Simon for suggesting it. :D

Good for you Lona Lass, I had no problem my email program, I use Outlook and think I'll keep it that way, although Mozzila has it's own email program. What has it not got is more like, and yes it does appear to load faster. Either way we have the choice of two browsers, I was planning on trying another, hence I started this thread. ;D

Tony,

In the Cookie Manager, you can choose which sites to allow cookies from, and which not to. Obviously it would take some time to set up, and I admit is not an ideal solution, but I suppose you could build a list of cookies to block, then you would not have to delete the ones you want to keep, if you see what I mean. It would be nice to be able to save certain cookies from being zapped, I have to admit, but that's a minor gripe in my opinion.

Yes I do use the Mail Client, simply because it's not quite so vulnerable to all these bugs and holes that Outlook seems to get. Not having a central Inbox does take some getting used to, particularly if you have multiple mail accounts, but it's perfectly workable. Here's a little tweak - if you want to set the background colour of your e-mails, you can do this in about:config (type that in address bar), but putting in the HTML colour code, under msgcompose.background_color. A list of HTML colour codes can be found here (http://users.rcn.com/giant.interport/COLOR/1ColorSpecifier.html).

The pop up stopper is the best I have come across, which doesn't seem to stop the ones you actually want, unlike most of the third party ones used with IE. If you come to a site where you want pop ups to get through, just click Tools > Pop Up Manager > Allow Pop Ups From This Site, and job done. It also blocks those pesky pop unders.

Lona, I can't understand why it would have affected your OE log in details. I think that may have been down to the other thing you changed, as it may now think you are someone different! Anyway, if you use the password manager in Mozilla, you'll only have to put your passwords in once, and it will remember them. Can't see why your Hotmail shouldn't work, but I've always found that downloading Hotmail in Outlook / OE is not always that reliable.

Anyway, keep at it guys! There's loads of features to discover! I must get to work now - catch you later! :D :D

Cheers Simon,

but it looks like I'll be sticking with IE:6, well forced to really >:( Because the encrypted site I use to log onto my 'tradeing platform' will not work with Mozzila. But I can and proburbly will use it on an evening when the Markets are closed.

But my needs are not the norm, and would certainly recommend Mozzila to others.

Title: Re:Web Browser THE BEST ?
Post by: Simon on September 19, 2003, 09:56
That's a shame, Tony. There are a small handful of website which are not compatible with Mozilla. This is not a fault in Mozilla, it's just that the websites concerned have been designed to only work on one platform, that being IE, but these are few in number. The online facility for my Marbles card doesn't work with Moz either, but, apart from Windows Updates, that is the only site where I am forced to use IE. All my other credit card sites, and my Halifax home banking services work fine.

I hope you do continue to use Moz when you are not trading, Tony. Just a point, but could you not set Moz as your default browser, and just use IE for your trading, or is it not that simple?
Title: Re:Web Browser THE BEST ?
Post by: Tony on September 19, 2003, 10:53
Great Minds Simon........ ::) Thats just what I have deceided to do.

Because if I only use IE:6 for my Trading Platform, I cannot crash IE:6, if I'm not using it for any other applications.

A question regarding Mozilla.........

When I load my pictures from my digi camera on to the hard drive they open up in the mozilla brouser instead of my picture software. I have to right click and open with my picture software.
Is it something that I should have configured with Mozilla.?? :-\
Title: Re:Web Browser THE BEST ?

Lona, if you right click the picture file and select 'Open With...', then 'Choose Program', you can then choose which program you want to open the file, and tick the box at the bottom to get it to always open those file types with your chosen software.

How are you finding Mozilla generally?

i downloaded and installed both Mozilla and Opera last night and trialed them for an hour each. After that, Mozilla was on top, but both were uninstalled and i reverted back to my trusty IE. I dont know why i prefer it, its just the best browser for me...

However, when i get Mandrake up and running (dunno when that will be) i think it will be my browser of choice ;)

To be honest at first I did not rate it as good as IE:6 The only reason being, I did not know my way around it, but it is now my default browser.

When I first imported my 'Favourites ' they were all over the place. Then I found 'Manage Bookmarks' anyway all sorted now, and I have even popped my six most visited websites on my Personal Tool Bar. And I've never had a pop up advert since I started using it, plus I have set it to dump all cookies when I close the Mozzila. I could go on but I wont.......

That's not really long enough to make a fair assessment, WD. You could hardly have found your way around in just an hour, let alone giving Moz or Opera a work out. I have to admit, I installed and uninstalled Moz a number of times, because I felt so at home with IE. It was difficult to break away but now that I have, I don't think I would ever go back to having IE as my default browser. I only use it now when forced to. It's just a question of getting used to something a little different. :)

Glad you like it Tony - with Lona, that's two of you giving it a good fair trial. :D

It should have automatically imported your IE favorites when you installed it, WD. Did it not? If not, Export them from IE to your desktop, then go into Moz, click Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks > Tools > Import, then locate the file you just put on your desktop. That should do it. You can then arrange your Bookmarks using the Bookmark Manager, which Tony referred to above. Hint: to sort a folder alphabetically, highlight it and press Ctrl + N.

Well done for giving it another try! ;D ;D

Psst... Sean, that's 3 for Moz now! ;)

If you want to go back to the previous page, you hold down the right mouse button and move the mouse to the left. Similarly to go forward, you hold the rmb and move the mouse to right.

Since getting used to it in Opera, I find myself doing it when I'm forced to use IE.

Opera has loads of gestures (as does Moz with Optimoz) but I only really use back and forward.

It is a plugin called Optimoz (http://optimoz.mozdev.org/) WD.

It's a plugin, WD. You can get it here (http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/#mousegest), as well as lots of others. :)

Can I just remind everyone that if you intend to use the Mail Client, you'll need the Spellchecker (http://spellchecker.mozdev.org/) plug in.

P.S. Sean's Optimoz link gives more info than mine. ;)

Hi Guys, I've been using Mozilla for a while now and find it much faster, only drawback and I'm sure I should be able to solve it is that in hotmail I don't get the text editor and on msn communities same problem so I can't alter font, use smilies etc, any ideas?

Hi Gem, nice to see you again. :)

Don't use Hotmail or MSN communities myself, so I'm not really sure what you mean by 'text editor'. Moz is brillant, but there are a few websites which are designed rigidly for IE - could this be the problem?

Well, seeing as Hotmail and MSN were probably designed by Micro$oft, I have a strong suspicion that they may have been bearing IE in mind. ;)

Whether Opera or Mozilla, :welldone: everyone who has come out of the dark and into the light and dumped the verminous Microsoft browser. :)

Next step:

Early next year, I plan to trial the "Lindows" operating system. Hopefully, if I can give a positive report others may follow and free themselves from the verminous Microsoft company once and for all.

Has anyone used the Mozilla e-mail client yet? What do you think of it? I have to admit, it took a while for me to get used to it, being that you have no central 'Inbox'.

If you have multiple e-mail accounts, all your mail for each account is sent to individual mailboxes (see below). Once you get used to this, it actually makes things very easy to organise, and when you get an e-mail, you will automatically reply to it from the correct address. There's a nice pop up notification of incoming mail too. You can create folders, as per usual, and the Compose screen is pretty standard, although don't be too tempted to use the built in smilies, as, for some reason, these only seem to display to the recipient if they are also using MozMail.

One thing I have found is that, compared to Outlook, sending mail is about 5 times faster, especially if it is being virus scanned on the way out, and disabling of cookies and scripts is available, which is a good security feature, as is switching off the Preview Pane, which most security conscious people would do anyway. MozMail is also not as likely to be attacked, as most of these scum tend to target Outlook / OE, as they are the most common clients.

The best feature, however, has to be the Junk Mail Filter system. It does take a while to get it trained, as it tends to treat everything even slightly suspicious as spam, at first, but you can soon get things working satisfactorily. You can train it to move Junk to a specific folder, to be deleted after a specific time, or to be immediately zapped, and I know many of you would find this a useful feature.

Another nice little toy is the 'Get Map' button in the Address Book. If you have a postal address on your contact's 'card', you can click the 'Get Map' button, to get a road map of where they live!

All in all, MozMail is a competant mail client, and has all the features you would expect, and more. It just behaves a little differently to most other mail clients, but once you get to know it, you'll have no problems with it. Importing of Mail / Accounts / Addresses from OE / Outlook is easy too.

Go on! There's no reason not to try it!!

Sounds good Simon,

Must say having to look in three different accounts for incoming mail is a bit of a bind though. But I set it up with my two email accounts and one fo the Wife. Unfortunatley it kept asking for my password for the email accounts, which is the same for all accounts [after thirty five years, if you cannot trust each other ::)] Anyway it said the server was not accepting that password or was not accepting mail right now. The password is correct and it was inputed correctly, might have ago later if I can be bothered ::)

Hmmm, sounds like the server might be down, Tony. It's amazing how often this sort of thing happens, just when you're trying something new, so you automatically blame the new program for the problem, when it may lie elsewhere. You did get the Password Manager to remember your e-mail passwords, yes?

If you continue to have problems with an account, I would suggest you go into (in MozMail) Edit > Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings, and delete the offending account. Then press Add Account, to set it up again manually, assuming you know the POP3 settings. You don't need to put in SMTP server settings, as Moz will send all mail through your default SMTP server, unless you tell it otherwise.

The server was working because I tested it via outlook, I could recieve but not send using Mozilla. I know it is the setting up that was at fault, but even if I dumped the account and started again, it faulted. So I have dumped that account folder, anyway what about this a stand alone Mozilla email client http://texturizer.net/thunderbird/download.html (http://texturizer.net/thunderbird/download.html) you can download different skins, and I belive there is alot more functionality than with the built in email client.

To keep yourself up their as the Mozzi expert, you had better download it and try it Simon ;D ::)«

1 General Questions

    *
      1.1 What is Thunderbird?

Thunderbird is a free, open-source and cross-platform mail client for most operating systems including, but not limited to, Windows, Linux and Macintosh. It is based on the Mozilla codebase. It is a robust and easy to use client, similar to competing products like Outlook Express, but with some major advantages such as junk mail classification. Read more about the mail client at the Thunderbird Project Page.
      1.2 What is Mozilla?

Mozilla is an open-source web browser, mail client and toolkit, designed for standards compliance, performance and portability. Mozilla.org provides binaries for testing and feedback. For more about mozilla.org, read Mozilla at a Glance.
1.3 What's the difference between Thunderbird and the Mozilla Mail client?

Mozilla is a complete suite of web related applications, such as a browser, a mail/news client, a chat client and much more. Thunderbird is just a mail client, which makes it a better choice if you already have a browser like Mozilla Firebird for example.

Note, though, that Thunderbird is not just the standalone Mozilla mail client. The user interface in Thunderbird differs from Mozilla in a few ways, such as the customizable toolbars. Also, since Thunderbird is smaller than the whole Mozilla suite, it's also faster and easier to use. At least it's going to be soon...
1.4 Where can I download Thunderbird?

There is an experimental build available at ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird. Note that this is not even the 0.1 release.
1.5 How do I install Mozilla Thunderbird?

For Windows, unzip the file into a folder of your choosing. Launch thunderbird.exe.
1.6 How do I uninstall Mozilla Thunderbird?

If you installed Mozilla Thunderbird using the unofficial installer for Windows, just uninstall it using the Add or Remove Programs applet in the Windows Control Panel.

If you installed Mozilla Thunderbird using the official compressed archives, just remove the folder you installed Mozilla Thunderbird in. You may also want to remove the profile folder. Note that that will also remove all your e-mail messages stored in that profile folder.
1.7 What's the difference between releases and nightlies?

Releases are generally more stable versions of Mozilla Thunderbird that should probably be downloaded by the first-time user. Nightly builds are released every night and contain the very latest changes, including new features and bugs. Don't expect everything to work in the nightly builds. (Well, don't expect everything to work in the releases either!)
1.8 Is Mozilla Thunderbird available in my language?

Possibly. Since Mozilla Thunderbird is an open-source project, contributors are constantly translating Mozilla Thunderbird into other languages. You can check if Mozilla Thunderbird is available in your language in the localized builds list, available from the download page.
1.9 How do I start the Profile Manager?

Thunderbird stores your personal settings and mail in a profile folder. The Profile Manager is used to manage multiple profiles. To start the Profile Manager, run Thunderbird with the -p switch. On Windows, follow these steps:
         1. Close Thunderbird completely (select File | Exit from the menu).
         2. Select Start | Run... from the Windows Start menu.
         3. Enter the full path to Thunderbird, enclosed with quotation marks, then add the -p switch, e.g.:
            "C:\Program Files\Thunderbird\Thunderbird.exe" -p

Once started, you are able to add, remove or rename profiles. Note that if you have more than one profile, you will be asked which profile to use each time you start Thunderbird.

      « Back to Contents

2 Usage

    *
2.1 How do I make Thunderbird my default mail program?

The first time you run Thunderbird, it should ask you if you want to make it your default mail client. If you answered "No" and later decide you would like it to act as your default mail client:
o Windows, Mac: go to Edit | Preferences | General and check "Use Thunderbird Mail as the default mail application".

If you still have problems with mailto: links under Windows, go to Start | Settings | Control Panel and open Internet Options. Under the "Programs" tab, select "Thunderbird" from the drop-down list next to "E-mail:".
o GNOME (Unix/Linux): Open the Control Panel. Go to Document Handlers | URL Handlers. Put mailto in the left text field, and gnome-moz-remote "%s" in the right one. Then put the following text in ~/.gnome/gnome-moz-remote (create the file if it does not exist):
o [Mozilla] filename=absolute path of Thunderbird install directory/mozilla KDE 3 (Unix/Linux): Open the Control Center and go to Network | Email. Under Preferred Email Client, enter:
absolute path of Thunderbird install directory/mozilla --mail
2.2 How do I migrate my Mozilla mail and settings to Thunderbird?

Thunderbird is now using separate profiles to not interfere with Mozilla. In order to migrate your mail and settings from Mozilla to Thunderbird, follow these steps:
         1. Start up the new version of Thunderbird and let it create a default Thunderbird profile for you. When the Account Manager comes up click cancel and exit the application.
         2. Find the Mozilla profile you are interested in migrating (...\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\\XXXXXXXX.slt). Find the location of your new default Thunderbird profile folder. Now copy all the contents of the first directory into the second including subfolders.
         3. You aren't done yet because Mozilla uses absolute directory paths in prefs.js. Open up the Thunderbird prefs.js file in a text editor. Search and replace all strings containing: ...\Mozilla\Profiles\XXXX.slt with ...\Thunderbird\Profiles\XXXX.slt. Save the file and start up Thunderbird.

Note: This method brings over your mail and account settings, your junk mail training data, and filters. Make sure your POP account in Thunderbird is configured to leave all mail on the server in case you want to go back and read pop mail from Mozilla Mail. Also, copying the Mozilla profile results in a lot of preferences and files no longer needed, since Thunderbird is a mail client only. Remove redundant files at your own risk.

2.3 Can I access my Netscape WebMail or Hotmail accounts through Thunderbird?

No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. There is also freeware applications available that will let you do the same thing, such as Hotmail Popper.

Another example is Gotmail, which is a utility to non-interactively download email from a Hotmail account. It can download messages from all folders, messages from certain folders, or new messages only. There are options to delete downloaded messages or mark them as read. Gotmail can forward messages to other email addresses or save them as local mbox-style mailboxes.

Of course, you can access your WebMail account on the Web at http://webmail.netscape.com/, or Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com/. If you use Microsoft Messenger, clicking on the appropriate link will open your default browser and take you to your inbox.
2.4 How do I use the spam filters?

Mozilla Thunderbird comes with build-in spam filters, effectively moving (or removing) unwanted e-mail messages from your mail folders. There is a great article at Netscape DevEdge explaining how to fight junk mail with Netscape 7.1. This article applies to Mozilla Thunderbird too.
2.5 Does Thunderbird come with a spell checker?

      Yes!
2.6 Can I use different themes for Thunderbird?

Yes! Please visit the Themes section on this site for a list of the available themes.
2.7 What's the keyboard shortcut for feature x?

See the Keyboard Shortcuts table on this site for a list of the most common keyboard shortcuts.
2.8 Is Thunderbird susceptible to e-mail viruses?

Thunderbird will not allow a virus or worm to execute automatically. You can see what attachments have been sent to you without a virus being able to execute, and you would have to save a file to your system and deliberately run it before it could cause any harm.

JavaScript is switched off by default for mail and news, so an e-mail cannot run script code just by being opened.

As with any mail program, take proper caution before running any file that you receive in e-mail. Appropriate anti-virus software should also help keep you safer.

2.9 How do I import e-mail messages from another mail program?

Go to Tools | Import, which will bring up a dialog to guide you through the process.
2.10 How do I export e-mail messages to another mail program or computer?

Thunderbird's mail files are in the standard plain text "mbox" format, which almost all mail programs can use or import. Many proprietary mail programs have a function to import from Eudora, which also uses the "mbox" format; this function should read your Mozilla mail files properly.

Your mail files are inside your profile (see The Profile Folder), in the Mail and (if you use IMAP) ImapMail folders. Each mail folder (Inbox, Sent, etc.) is stored as two files ? one with no extension (e.g. INBOX), which is the mail file itself (in ?mbox? format), and one with an .msf extension (e.g. INBOX.msf), which is the index (Mail Summary File) to the mail file. Tell the other program to import mail from the file with no extension.

If you want to transfer a mail file to another Mozilla profile or another installation of Mozilla, simply put the mail file into the other installation?s Mail folder.
2.11 Is there a mail notifier in Thunderbird?

Yes, the Windows version of Thunderbird includes mail notification in the system tray while Thunderbird is open.
2.12 How do I use S/MIME, PGP or GnuPG to send and receive signed or encrypted messages?

To use S/MIME, open Mail/News and go to Edit | Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings | account name | Security. You can set which certificates to use with each account for digital signing and/or encryption.

Hooks to PGP or GnuPG are not included in Thunderbird, but are under development at Enigmail.
2.13 I changed my IMAP password, how do I get rid of a cached password?

In your profile folder, you should see a numeric file with a .s extension, e.g. 12345678.s. Delete that file and Mozilla Thunderbird will forget your cached passwords, forcing you to reenter all your passwords again. Eventually a button under the advanced preferences panel for forgetting stored passwords may be added.

Yes, I nearly posted a link to Thunderbird myself, Tony. I looked at it briefly, but didn't like the fact that you can only choose from 4 different fonts to send mail in. :(

The part above you highlighted in bold is also a feature of MozMail. You cannot run attachments (.exe files etc) direct from the e-mail, without first saving it elsewhere, and then deliberately opening it, hopefully not before scanning it for viruses.

Thunderbird and Firebird are at the moment stand alone entities, but the global plan is for these to take over from the current Mozilla suite, following the next couple of builds to get things right.

I'll have a closer look at Thunderbird, and see how tweakable it is, but at first glance, I couldn't find much different to MozMail.

Anything's worth a try, Tony! ;) I just had another look at Thunderbird, and it doesn't really look 'complete' to me. There are a few plugins you can add to it, but from what I can see, they only bring it up to the standard of the current Mozilla mail client. I think I'll wait for them to put all the nuts and bolts on! ;D ;D

Well I've got all I want with Outlook, and I have never been infected via email, attempts yes but always blocked.

But I do like the browser and the way it works, and the Personal folder bar is neat. I have downloaded five skins to try out, and I cannot make my mind up between Lo-Fi and Nautipolis 1.4, I'm on the latter to-night. I might download the mouse comands later.

Look I'm sorry to go on about it, but the Mozilla web browser is absolutlley fabulous :D

I have downloaded and been playing with the 'Mouse Gestures' what a boon they are. And 'Tabbed Browsing'.......well what can I say......it's fantastic.

Look all those who have not tried it yet, download it NOW, and don't worry, it will not interfere with your Microsoft Internet Explorer. I still use IE:6 for just one page [my Trading Platform] whilst I use Mozilla for all my other web browsing. And I know you should never say never, but I'll never go back to IE:6 for all my other Web Browsing. ;D

And to think after trying it for an hour, I nearly jacked it in because I had not learnt all the good bits, he he ........yes I feel smug, but so will you if you give it a real good try.

My report on Mozilla is mixed. First, the good points..... It's much faster than IE, it does have a lot of fancy bits, like choosing your own search engine and different skins. Haven't tried the "Mouse Gestures" yet.
The drawbacks..........Some sites you cannot access without adding a plug-in and some sites you just can't access at all. Another annoying habit Mozilla has.....it has changed all my icons on some of my files with that annoying little red face it has.
I have tired uninstalling it and it says the uninstall file is missing. Half of it is gone and the other half is in explorer under program files. I was wondering if I should re-install it on top of itself to see if that helps.
I really don't think the benefits outweight the drawbacks for me but then the way this PC is acting up at the moment who knows. :-\

OK, some sites, such as PC Pals need a Flash plug in. It tells you where to get it, and once you've got it, you won't need to get it again. The only other plug in I can imagine you may require is Java, which you should already have, but if not, again, it's easily downloadable, and you only need to do it once.

There are a small handful of sites which will not work with Mozilla, as the developers of those sites have designed them rigidly for IE. This is not really a fault in Mozilla, but I agree it can be a little inconvenient. All it means is that when you want to access those sites, you have to use IE, but that doesn't stop you using Moz as your default browser.
Quote

This just means that by default, Mozilla will open the file. If you want to change it, just right click the file, select 'Open with...', then 'Choose Program'. You can then select the program you want to open that file with, and if you tick the box, it will open all files of that type with your chosen program in future.

If you really want to uninstall the best browser available ::) ;) and it is saying files are missing, then yes, I would re-install it on top, then uninstall it using Add / Remove Programs. It takes a couple of minutes to uninstall, and sometimes the little box which asks you to confirm you want to remove it gets hidden under other windows, for some reason, which is why you may have disrupted the uninstall process before. If you are going to uninstall it, also delete the Mozilla.org file in C:\Program Files.

I hope the above may be of some use, and may tempt you to give it another chance, Lona! :)

Well I was just about to say I've been surfing for 3 hours and I've found it lovely no problems at all. Probably not using all of its functions yet but still I like it ................

When - it all went pairshaped, first the screen only showed a small portion in the window and it repeated this all the way down the page. Then it came back and the writing all went different shapes and sizes. Then I had a look and it said it wasn't responding, and I tried to end task and everything crashed - I lost use of my mouse, then some bits came back and I managed to close it. And then it was fine, I got cut off and reconnected and here I am

Dunno if that was my puter but it seemed to start with mozilla.

I'm not giving up yet though :P

You did get version 1.4 Michelle, yes? Anything newer than that is still in testing stages, and liable to crashes. Sounds like a bit of a temporary glitch, but I have to say, that has never happened to me. Perhaps it was something else sent it haywire? No reason why not to, but did you also happen to have an IE window open at the time? What I would try is, if you can remember it, go back to the website you were on when it crashed, and see if it happens again.

Have you changed to the 'Modern' skin yet? Looks much better when you do, and try the tabbed browsing - a lot of people find that really useful.

Is that supposed to be a compliment Tony. :D ::)

Of course it was "Hen" :) and such a young thing like you worrying over an icons appeareance ::) I bet if it was a white outlined M on a grey background it would not be an issue, right ?

As for the plugins, I had to download Macromedia Flash [I think] for the PC-Pals sigs to be shown. But like Simon says, you only dwnload em once, if you uninstall Mozilla, and then reinstall it, there is no need to download the plugins again. If you do decide to uninstall it, leave the Mozilla folder, it is doing no harm, plus if you reinstall, your settings for Mozilla, like imported IE: favourites folders, and personal tool bar settings, will already be set up. How do I know, because in my ignorance I uninstalled it, but luckly went back to it.

Tell you what, you know the row of vertical P icon's on the home page, left hand side, well since I loaded EI:6 they just show as X's, if I use IE:6, but I dont, so no prob.

Download the plugins and the mouse gestures, it's not visiting the dentist you know. your starting to behave like an old person now.

I run with IE:6 open all day Simon, as well as using Mozilla , there is not conflict if you run the two together, least ways not with me.

Mich,

never mind the "Modern" skin ;D download "Nautipolis 1.4" or give "Lo-Fi" a go, mind there are loads to pick from, they are very small downloads.

Let us know how you go on with it, but I have never had a moments bother with it, mind you I'm using a proper O/S.......W2K Pro. I bet your using that "Bag O Sh*t" Win 98 or it's variant Millenium ::)

Yes, Tony, I occasionally run both browsers together, without any problem. I was just stabbing in the dark to try to get to the source of Michelle's crash, but I think it was probably just one of those things that can happen with any program.

That stuff is kept in a hidden Application Data folder, Tony, somewhere in My Documents. I know, because when I upgraded to Moz 1.4 from 1.3, I had to remove the Mozilla.org folder in C:\Program Files, for 1.4 to install, but it still kept all my settings. ;)

This just means that by default, Mozilla will open the file. If you want to change it, just right click the file, select 'Open with...', then 'Choose Program'. You can then select the program you want to open that file with, and if you tick the box, it will open all files of that type with your chosen program in future.

Since uninstalling mozilla my jpg files won't open anywhere but windows imaging. They no longer recognise my photo software and come up with invalid file format. :brick:

Oh well, you can't win them all! ;) Sorry your files got messed up, Lona. It's probably just a file association issue. Have you tried the method I suggested? If that doesn't work, re-installing your photo software should do the trick, as it should re-associate the files.

Lona. If you want to restore your file associations (and "Open With" isn't doing it) try the longer route.

Open My Computer

From View menu choose "Folder Options"

Click the "File Types" tab and from the list choose the type you want to resore ie jpeg by highlighting it

Click the Edit button and then choose "Open" (or "Play" for a sound file) by clicking it

Browse to the application you want to open the file with and then OK and Close

I don't really want to put the spanner in the works, but as I am only five weeks from my six-monthly format I'm currently being adventurous and trying out various programs. Already a first-choice Opera user with Mozilla also installed, I am currently downloading the Mozilla "Firebird" browser. I'll report back when I've had a good fiddle with it.

Ah well, that was a total waste of time. Downloaded it and found it comes packaged as a zip file. When unzipped weighs in at 17.5MB, five times the size of Opera, and does nothing that Opera can't do.

Bloatware is software that requires considerable disk space, but does nothing more than the alternatives, or is full of "features" which are useless gimmicks. The classic example is Windows ME. It does nothing that Windows 98SE isn't able to do and yet the full install is around 500MB compared to 98SE's 275MB.

Can't understand why you're having problems, Michelle. The only thing I can suggest is try uninstalling Moz (with Add / Remove Programs), then re-install it. Maybe something didn't go quite right the first time?

Dave, believe it or not, Firebird is supposed to be the slimmed down version of Mozilla! I have tried it, and have to admit, I didn't like it all that much. It seems too unfinished (which it is), and didn't inspire confidence, like Mozilla does. Maybe I'll try it again, when they've put all the nuts and bolts on. The same goes for Thunderbird, the stand alone mail client companion to Firebird.

Just one thing to say to you Sen...nice arse ::)

cammy,

whats up with 'bookmarks' being on the your 'Personal Toolbar' do you like running with 20% of your screen taken up with the IE: Favourites being open !!!!!!

I put my ten most popular visited sites on the 'Personal Toolbar' it will take more than ten, but number eleven onwards will be accessed on a drop down list icon extreme left of the toolbar.

To set that up, go to top toolbar, boomarks, manage bookmarks, then just drag and drop sites into Personal folder from your IE: favourites folder.

Then if you want, open up tabbed browsing, and you can have these sites already loaded and open. To open tabbed browsing, just hold down right click and move your mouse upwards on your mouse mat by quater inch. Every time you do that, you will open another tab on the tabbed browser toolbar, neat eh ;D

Waddaya mean you aint downloaded 'Mouse Gestures' do it now http://optimoz.mozdev.org/ (http://optimoz.mozdev.org/) It's great, hold down right click , and move mouse to left, goes back to last page visited, go on go on go on download it ;D

Another easy way to change the red lizard icon, is to right click a file, then choose Properties. It will say Opens With... Mozilla, and there's a 'Change' button, which you can click on to change the program which opens that type of file.

You can also download icon packs (http://iconpacks.mozdev.org/) for Mozilla, but I haven't experimented with them myself yet, so I can't comment on what they're like.

Title: Re:Web Browser THE BEST ?
Post by: Simon on September 26, 2003, 23:37
Moz does not contain any spyware, Michelle. I did a quick search for "backweb lite", and what kept coming up was Logitech, then I found this:

Quote
Backweb / lite is a background downloading program , with the intention of downloading software updates, news, and other such data, computer manufacturers are installing it onto computer systems as part of a software package , although there are many other ways it can end up on your computer, with or without your knowledge, Logitech & Kodak have already included this generic background downloading program, into its own software / drivers packages, and there's a large list other companies considering using BackWeb for auto updates ect,

This software could be considered a perfectly harmless way of gathering information about users, and updating there software appropriately,

But personally, I would only trust them, as far as I could comfortably spit them and no further, I think the whole idea has a bad smell about it

I would let SpyBot remove it, but I can't understand how it got past your Spyware Blaster, if it is fully updated.

Re the Mozilla icons, you can change them with one of the methods posted earlier in this thread.

You do seem to have a persistant spyware problem on your PC, Michelle. If it's not stuff you are downloading, it must be being generated by something you have installed on your computer. :-\

I had backweb pre installed on PC Michelle, and I uninstalled it. Look in Add/remove and see if you have backweb and uninstall it. It is a waste of space. I don't think Mozilla likes WinMe, Michelle. :(
Title: Re:Web Browser THE BEST ?
Post by: Simon on September 27, 2003, 08:46
You probably had Backweb bundled in with some other software you installed, Michelle. If it's in Add / Remove, as Lona suggested, bin it from there, then update and run Ad Aware and Spybot, and remove any instances they find.

Now, this Spyware Blaster of yours. ::) I'm not sure if it would detect spyware if it has been installed within other software. I think it may only stop it being downloaded from web pages, but not certain about that. Anyway, have you definitely got the latest version (2.6.1), and have you definitely updated it? After it has loaded the new definitions, you have to press 'Select All', then 'Protect Against Checked Items' to activate the protection for the new definitions. That bit could be missed (especially if you are blonde - heehee), but if you don't do that part, you might as well not have Spyware Blaster at all. Sorry if that's stating the bleeding obvious, but somehow spyware is getting through your defences, so it needs to be established how this is happening. Suggest you have a look at the list in SB, and see if there are any unchecked items (they will be in red).

It could well be that, although Mozilla doesn't block spyware as far as I know, something is being prevented from 'phoning home' when you use Moz, which could be causing it to crash. If you have programs which rely on spyware to work properly, they are not worth having, in my opinion, and you should seek alternatives.

Here endeth this morning's lecture! ;D ;D

I have done all that you said on the spyblaster thing simon, you did tell me all that when I first got it, and I do as I'm told (mostly) ;D but do I have to click on it everytime I go on line to tell it to work?

With regard to the backweb thing its dawned on me that if it isn't to do with mozilla, the only new thing I've had on the puter is my boyfriend put his kodac camera software on it yesterday so its probably come with that. I've taken it off with spybot and I'll do that add and remove incase there's anything else there, thanks lona and simon.

eek I've got a new keyboard and mouse and its very weird, this keyboard is gonna take some getting used to its smaller than my old one, and simon, I impulse bought the 5 button mouse, it was from staples so I know much more expense than probably else where but I had to try it

Title: Re:Web Browser THE BEST ?

According to the info in the link both Dave and myself posted, Backweb does come bundled in with Kodak software. You don't actually need the software to view pictures from the camera. You should be able to use Paint Shop Pro, or whatever your existing picture viewing software is, and you just need to plug the camera into the PC by the USB. XP has it's own picture viewing software, but not sure if ME does.

If that new keyboard and mouse happens to be Logitech, apparently Backweb is bundled in with that too! ::)

do I have to click on [spyware blaster] everytime I go on line to tell it to work?

No you don't have to have it running all the time. It does it's job and that's that, until you need to update it again. Sorry Michelle, I wasn't being funny, it's just that so many people don't update their protection properly, or regularly, I tend to drum it in a bit! ;D ;D

Oh sorry did you say that it was with kodak ? doh, I didn't really pay attention to what the camera was until last night.

No I've only put them keyboard and mouse on today - and its "trust"

Whitedevil. You do realise that you could get a free @yahoo.co.uk webmail address, which can then be converted to pop3 at no cost?

If you want to know more, send me a pm and I'll post instructions here.

And here's a list of delights for the new version (1.6), which is at the alpha testing stage at this moment, but is available to download for the more adventurous:

New Features and Fixes

* One of the most requested Mozilla Mail features, optional separate Recipient and Sender columns in thread pane, has been implemented.

* Backend support for Navigator windows to be layered or anchored "always in front" or "always in back" has been added. You can get the UI extension Window Layers from mozdev.org to try the feature (not working for Linux).

* One step closer to the kitchen sink, about:about has been implemented. Typing about:about in the address field will give the user a nice list of available about:s.

* Another massively requested MailNews feature, a preference for placing the user's signature above the quoted text, has been added.

* The View Source window now has reload functionality.

* "Remove from server after x days" has been implemented for POP3 mail accounts.

* vCard support has been added to Mozilla Mail.

I have tried a load of Browsers, but have always had some problem or other with them. I.E.6 is the only one that loads all pages from all sites. You also get probs with downloading on some other browsers. Mozilla Firebird is good and fast, as is Opera, but still some probs with sites. Whats this with flashplayer? Why dont you need it with I.E.6?

    :-\ :-\
Title: Re:Web Browser THE BEST ?
Post by: Simon on February 09, 2004, 09:51
Multimedia Flash Player is probably built into IE6, whereas it isn't with other browsers, but it's a very quick and simply download to install it.

I suppose it balances out with pop up stoppers, cookie managers, etc, not being built into IE, but a standard feature in Mozilla. :)

Regarding web pages, yes there are a few which will only open in IE, as this is how they were built. There is an add-on tool for Mozilla, with which you can right click any web page, and select 'View this page in IE'. A doddle, and the many security flaws which are currently appearing in IE, far outweigh the odd problem opening a web page in Mozilla, in my opinion.

Naa, stick to what you've got, Lona. Firefox is still in it's relative infancy, and is a stand alone browser (i.e. has no e-mail client). It will eventually evolve and replace Mozilla, but not for some time yet. If you're happy with the version you have, there's no real reason to upgrade, as the later versions of Mozilla are virtually identical to the one you have. ;)
Title: Re:Web Browser THE BEST ?

Title: Re:Web Browser THE BEST ?
Post by: Simon on March 02, 2004, 23:16
Well, it is said to be slightly faster, Lona. There would be no harm in trying it - you could always uninstall it again, without damaging your original Mozilla installation. You would have to get any plugins you have for Mozilla again, for Firefox, but why not give it a go, if you're curious?

Actually, no, in the case of installing Firefox, it's not necessary to uninstall Mozilla first. In fact, my advice would be to leave Mozilla installed, at least while you give FF a try, then it's just a question of uninstalling FF if you don't like it, and going back to the Mozilla suite. ;)

Right Firefox is faster than Mozilla. Tried Mozilla yesterday, and took it out again. I found it slow and didnt like the E-Mail client. I prefer Firefox because as I say its faster and you are able to customize it easier. I also use Outlook 2003 for E-Mail. These two make a great combination-not forgetting Mail Washer to preview mail!

Can you set Firefox to use your default e-mail client, for clicking 'mailto:' links? I just wondered how it worked, not having it's own e-mail facility.

I suppose I could try it, and still have Mozilla Mail as my e-mail client. :-\ As I said before, the only thing I don't like about Outlook is the control it takes away from you regarding attachments.

Don't know that one, Simon. You're the expert on plugins etc. :). I don't know how you have problems with attachments in Outlook. It's Outlook Express I use and I never have a problem with attachments. All I can tell you is that if I am on Firefox and use contact it automatically brings up outlook express for me. :D. I have uninstalled Mozilla as I need all the space I can get on Hard Drive. :)

I have tried it a number of times in previous versions. All the new version really is, is a name change. My personal preference is still the Mozilla Suite. I downloaded Firefox a while ago, but never got round to using it fully. I may give it another shot, but I would still have to keep Mozilla for my e-mails, which would somewhat defeat the object of using Firefox.

Why worry? If you are happy with Mozilla stay with it. I think all programmes are looked upon in different ways, and some people like some and others dont. I like Outlook 2003 because it is simple to operate and I can use Mail Washer to preview all mail at the server end, cutting down virus risk.

Mozilla Mail does take a bit of getting used to, especially if you have multiple e-mail addresses, as there isn't a central Inbox, unlike most other mail clients. You have a separate Inbox for each mail account. As mail arrives, it's delivered to the relevent Inbox, and, as Delgado said, you get a nice notification pop up in the corner of your screen.

Hi Guys,

Been reading this thread with some amusement. I tried Firefox (when it was Firebird) a few months ago and just found it so slow to load webpages that I just went back to using Crazy Browser. That way I get the speed of IE with the multi-tabbedness we all know and love.

I still use it on the PC I use exclusively for secure sites, online banking etc.

About Crazy Browser? It's just an add on to IE, really. If you use Crazy Browser, you may get some additional functionality, but it's still IE underneath.

Tabs: You want to untick that top box, where it says 'Hide the tab bar...', then in the broswer window, click View > Show / Hide, and tick Tabs Bar.

The theme I have is 'Modern', but you can get loads by clicking View > Apply Theme > Get More Themes. I have only used the one, so I can't really recommend any others, but you can see screenshots of them on the download sites.

Here's the Home Button (http://3rdhand.info/mozilla/home/).

Smilies? Nobody really knows, but we suspect Adept might have been drinking when he lined them up!

:baad:

Anything else? Have you got the IE View (http://ieview.mozdev.org/) plug in? You can get loads of extra toys from the Extension Room (http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/).

    • How to I get new pages to load as tabs and not a new browser ? (I have changed the option in preferences as shown below - but they still open in a new browser). For example when loading threads on the forum or hitting CTRL + N

    Download Multizilla (http://multizilla.mozdev.org/) DJ.

    What's all the fuss about?
MultiZilla was the first browser extension to introduce the Tabbed UI for mozilla. Current mozilla builds make use of this idea but it is only partly integrated by the mozilla team, so MultiZilla still has lots of extra features that cannot be found in todays mozilla builds (even mozillaFirebird adds even more MultiZilla features like middle-click on bookmarks and some of the tabgroup features). However, we constantly work on new improvements and bug fixes. We're also very keen on keeping our users satisfied and work closely together towards a next release.

Ok Boss - I've downloaded it and it works a treat. Cheers Adept :adept:

I also found a great theme called Pinball thats now installed and also have the Home buttom installed.

I'm starting to like this Mozilla thing ;D

Just one more thing... if people use the glow font on the forum it shows up as the following in mozilla. See HERE (http://pc-pals.com/index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=11347) for an example. Any suggestions?

Moz doesn't support the code for the glowing font (and a good thing too IMHO!)

The link you gave was for a different board DJ, the one that this one was based on. PC-Pals uses YaBBSE software which is PHP-based whereas the link you gave is for YaBB which is Perl-based.

OK I'm having trouble again ;D

Just changed from Mozilla to Mozilla Firefox as Mozilla was crashing everyday.

But I can't get the new windows to open in tabs - the same problem I had previously. Also if I open another link, it sometimes replaces a page that I already had open.

Is there a way around this for Mozilla Firefox?

    Cheers (again!)

Hmmm I think my mozz was causing my puter to crash, I've not been using it for a while now, and I've not had one crash.

I'll leave it now til I "eventually" get round to partitioning the drive.

I miss the tabs though. Although Aol has this thing at the bottom of the screen where you can switch windows easily.

Ok sorted out the tab problem - it was an option in the Tab > Preferences menu.

But new tabs are overwritting old tabs - a new page opens in an existing tab instead of a new tab.

Anyone know how to fix this?

DJ, I haven't got Firefox loaded on mine at the moment, but I can only think it would be something in the options. If you haven't got it sorted later, I'll load it and have a look for you.

Michelle... Which version of Mozilla were you using? Anything below 1.6 is an 'old' version, and ideally should be updated, especially as 1.7 is just round the corner.

I've just had another brief flirtation with Firefox and Thunderbird, and still can't really see any attraction over the Mozilla suite, especially as the Thunderbird mail client isn't attached to the browser, so whenever I hit a mail link, it fired up Outlook, even though Thunderbird was set as the default mail client. Firefox is a great stand alone browser, but until they integrate the mail client, I'll still be sticking with Mozilla.

Friday I noticed in the news that Netscape are releasing a new browser based on the Firefox browser. To me that means that Firefox has reached a stage in its developement where it is poised to overtake its elder relation the Mozilla browser, as the Flagship browser. So I have decided to day to migrate to Firefox from Mozilla, and also install their stand alone mail client Thunderbird [though you can access it via Firefox]

And I like it, especially the extension install option, which at a glance tells you with plugins you have installed, plus it allows easy uninstall of plugins from within the extension window. Also on my first visit to PC Pals it automatically down loaded all the plugins I needed to view the site as intended.

So come on Simon, it's time you made the move over to Firefox as that is where all the developement will be focused in the futue

Edit: Not having the problem you have re mail client Simon, Thunderbird comes up every time via the Firefox link.

There was a reason I didn't like the Thunderbird mail client, Tony, and that is, the preferences don't appear in the about:config list of Firefox, and I couldn't find a way to access the Thunderbird preferences in the same way. The reason being, I wanted to maintain my beige coloured background to my outgoing mail, which I had to apply to the about:config list in Mozilla, as the default options didn't contain the colour I wanted. Also, I couldn't get Thunderbird to fire up from external 'mailto:' links. Outlook kept appearing instead, but I think I might have a solution to that now.

I would also miss the HTML editor (Composer) in Mozilla, which is really handy for putting stuff up on eBay, so although I am aware that Firefox is an excellent step forward, and has some very nice features, on balance, I think I'll be sticking to good old Moz for now.

I sussed the email signature setting, but never the colour setting [I use #ffffee] But it stays on the colour palete as "last used" so two clicks and its there. And I have no probs with external Mailto links either, so its a settings issue your end.

There is the FrontPage HTML editor in MS Office XP Pro, not so readily to hand I admit. Anyway I use Dreamweaver for my HTML editing, so another HTML editer is not needed.

:aarrgh: Last time I downloaded FF, and removed it, it buggered up my Mozilla profile, so I'll have to set aside some time to do it properly, as I will need to transfer all my plugins to FF, and my mail settings, and mail to TB as well. I have to admit, I'd still prefer an 'all-in-one' suite, and it's a bloody long way down from this fence! :P Surely, sooner or later, FF and TB will become integrated. I can't really see why there isn't an option to integrate them now, although I do see the advantage of them being stand alone as well.

    Simon,

Plugins are dead easy with Firefox, you just go "Tools" >Extensions and a littlw window opens. You then hit the "Get More Extensions link" and it takes you to the Firefox extension page (https://update.mozilla.org/extensions/showlist.php?application=firefox&version=1.0&numpg=10&category=All)once
downloaded, all plugins are viewable in that window, with a brief note saying what it does. And you can unpdate or uninstall any by opening that Extension window.

Only one I had to go looking for was the Backup Mozlla/Firefox program. Only down side is you have to back up both Firefox and Thunderbird seperately, but its no big deal, other than that issue they are intergrated in the everyday usage of them.

Ones I had at present [looking at my Extension Window ::) ] IEview, Image Zoom, Image-show-hide, Optimoz[ show/hide sidebar]Optimoz Mouse Gestures, Dictionary, Reload, Context Search.

Simon you will just have to look at the "EasyGestures" plugin, once it is in the Extension window, highlite the program, hit the Options button then the Actions tab, you'll be amazed at the programability of this little gizmo.

The TinyURL thing is neat, but Clive found that last year, and some of us have been using it for ages. It's especially useful for Moz / FF users as long links distort the web pages on here, which is why I go round editing them. ;)

I'm becoming more attracted to it, Tony, but however many plugins you add, it's still not going to be a complete integrated suite, and let's face it, there's nothing in FF you can't do with Mozilla, it's just that the plugins UI is very nice. I may try FF and TB when they bring out more skins for TB, as I really don't like the default Mail Compose window in TB, which looks very amateurish to me. I could just use FF and still keep MozMail as my default e-mail client, but that would seem to be defeating the object somehow.

Yes I noticed Clive was using the TinyURL thingy, but I did not notice it on the Moz plugins page. Like you say the plugins IU is a dreasm to use, no wandering of here and there for every plugin you might want to try.

As for the skin on the Thunderbird mail program, at first I did not like it as muchas the default Moz mail skin. But you know what, I prefer it now to the Moz one. Post a piccy of the skin your using then so peeps can compare.

Although I use Opera as my browser, and Opera's built in mail client for e-mail and I would never change them, I have been thinking of trying Thunderbird as my NewsReader. Does anyone here use Thunderbird for newsgroups and is it anywhere near as good as Outlook Express?

Much as I hate to admit it, I have tried all the well known NewsReaders, but for sheer simplicity none of them have come near to Microshaft's offering. Opera cannot be beaten for simple text only e-mail, and only the eternal optimist should be risking HTML mail - you might as well just download a .exe virus and run it. Opera's mail client is actually part of the browser. It simply runs within the browser in a new window. However, I don't like Opera for newsgroups, simply because I like to keep e-mail and newsgroups totally apart.

Therefore, I would be grateful if anyone could give me their opinion on Thunderbird's usefulness as a NewsReader.

    Thanks.

Firefox has a handy search box on the toolbar, it has by default five or six search engines on a drop down list, all with an identfying icon. But there are under the "Add Engines" link, ballpark 1300 search engine plugins you can download if you want to.http://tinyurl.com/xyjv (http://tinyurl.com/xyjv) For instance there are nineteen on Filesharing alone. In the Shopping section 150 .....even 21 in the Religious section......joudi and GSS are installing like mad this very minute ;D ;)

You just click on the one you want .....and bingo it is installed into the drop down list.....easy to uninstall as well as they are all stored in a "search plugins" folder in the Firefox directory.

i've never heard of that issue with mozilla...and i use it all the time (when I'm not on my windows machine).

As for using activex - no one uses that, surely! We use php - it doesnt call any activex procedures all runs on events generated by php functions. I guess some .asp sites might but 1) there arent many of them 2) they are more likely to use other code and not activex. Plus html, doesn't need to be used. The forum itself generates the html for you using the tags. It is fast and reliable. I would NEVER recommend using FrontPage though, it really doesnt render html to the correct worldwide set standards.

As for Yahoo...they could have the same thing as above. Are you sure they are using activex though, this is antiquated technology. And surely rentacoder are using .asp to do it? I wonder why they would use activex...

are they not?? I'm sure they have when I used yahoo... are you sure it is dependent on what version of fireofx / mozilla you have / what plugins you have.

They will be using MS technology, obviously, as they are both asp sites but this doesnt mean they are using activex for one and two shouldnt stop features working in Firefox, but then again with the later the whole point in Firefox is that it renders html correctly unlike how microsoft go about it.

Mmmm do you have a link so i can download the 1.4 version?? thanks Sarah xx

1.4 is now a very old version. You can click the button in my sig for the latest, which is now called SeaMonkey, for some strange reason, or if you're just looking for a browser on it's own, without the email and stuff, you might be better off with Firefox, also in my sig. :)

But, of course, there will be security issues if you use an older version. Best to go for the latest updates where browsers are concerned.
