My neighbours have suffered a spate of out-building break-ins over Christmas. Fortunately, I haven't been a victim (not because I was wearing my stripey jumper, mask and visiting my neighbours :P ) but I do have a garage and shed which seem vulnerable. I was thinking about fitting an alarm and/or security camera.
What would the members of this esteemed forum suggest?

Den is your man for this. :)

He is indeed. I live in a block of 42 flats which I manage and we have 13 security cameras strategically placed around the building. Every resident has access to the cameras via their TV system and I can retrieve footage from up to two weeks previous. The cameras have solved virtually every crime or perceived crime that has been so far committed.

You mean, you've not been caught yet?

He wears his sheep suit so they don't recognize him :sheep:
I dress like a cowboy myself

42 flats? That's a lot of area to cover with 13 cameras!
-
The cameras are wide angle and are placed to achieve maximum coverage. There is one of each floor that can monitor the front doors of every flat. One in the foyer, one on the ground floor, two outside the building, two in the basement, and three in the garage. There are blind spots for certain but we always get a result. The most recent incident was an alleged assault by a person wearing an Elvis mask last September. The police were able to see that victim was not telling the truth.

Lol. Elvis is in the house!
-
No he is not, he has left the building. 8-)
-
Thought you might be able to offer Gill some advice, Den?

Every September, the town holds the world's biggest Elvis festival and there are hundreds of Elvis lookalikes walking around wearing Elvis suits, wigs and masks. Lots of concerts and Elvis competitions with Elvis wannabes from around the world.

I need more details, Clive. Not that I intend visiting, of course - I'd hate to encounter it accidentally!

Here is the official website: http://www.elvies.co.uk/
And here is information about the 2017 event which includes a short video showing the main venue which is called the Grand Pavilion. The green building to the right is the block of flats in which I live. It's famous for being the most hated building in Wales but it has stunning views over the Bristol Channel.

Security cameras do little unless you monitor them regularly - probably not even admissible in court. Maybe just a fake one would be a visual deterrent. Maplin wouldn't be a bad place to pop to... or just get one of those window locks that makes a stupid loud noise when opened. Bet it would cause an opportunist to bugger off.

Ours is set up so everyone can tune in to the CCTV camera channel on their digital TV sets. If people are expecting visitors they can buzz them in and watch them enter the building and trace their movement in the building. A number of owners consider the channel to be good company and watch it all the time.

Are you talking about yourself...

His block of flats sounds like something out of the League of Gentlemen! Local spying for local people... :o:

Are you talking about yourself...
You know me too well Sam. It means I always know when Mrs Clive enters the building. 8-)
