Hi People,
I'm having tremendous trouble trying to install my new Lexmark X1100 multifunction printer. This is quite a long story so I'll try to keep it as brief as possible :-\ I use windows XP Professional & I have Broadband
I followed Lexmark instructions on installing printer......as soon as printer was connected via USB port my 'puter froze :'(
I uninstalled and re-installed...same prob!
I went to Lexmark site and followed instructions for installation on XP.....same prob.
I uninstalled and re-installed using wizard.....same prob ???
I phoned the Lexmark helpline.....they were stumped! The guy says "It's not meant to be this hard, that's the beauty of these USB devices, just plug them in and that's it" :o Then they said that they thought I had a faulty printer and to have it replaced.....I did this.......same prob with 2nd printer
I spoke to a friend who suggested that it may be Norton Antivirus causing the problem......I uninstalled Norton & installed PCcillan......same prob occured :-X
I went to Lexmark site and downloaded driver update for XP.....same prob :'(
If I disconnect my broadband the printer works fine......as soon as broadband and printer are connected together my 'puter freezes........can anyone help me? :'(

Hi Butterfly, and (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.apax34.dsl.pipex.com%2Fsmileys%2Fwelcome.gif&hash=05644ab4fbfa7c9585f756e9a79aab0a53d0e346)
I'm no expert, but this sounds like a possible USB power issue. Is the printer powered from the USB, or is it mains powered? Hopefully one of our techies will be able to help you properly soon.
-
Could be several things but I'd hazzard a guess that you've got a USB modem :)
This applies only if you have a USB modem
It might simply be that the printer and modem are trying to drag too much current from the USB port and as a result the computer s freezing.
One thing worth trying would be seeing if the printer powers up when you don't have the modem attached.
This would apply if you have it connected via network card
You may need to update your USB drivers - I take it you have installed service pack 1 for XP which installs the USB 2.0 support.
Oh and :welcome:
-
Hi & Thanks for replies & Welcomes :)
Yes printer is connected via USB port & modem is connected via USB port (I only have 2 USB ports)
The printer works fine when modem cable is disconnected.
I have no idea what a network card is
The XP issue is top secret :naughty: so I'm not able to download Sevice pack 1 but this issue may be resolved by the end of the month ;)

Simplest solution would seem to be buying a powered external hub (or an internal USB card). Just make sure the hub is a powered one and not passive i.e. it's got a separate power supply. Cost is about £15.
You should then be able to get both modem and printer running at the same time - you would also probably get an extra 2 USB ports thrown in (as most USB hubs come with 4 ports). Connect the hub to the computer and the modem and printer to the hub.
WRT service pack1 - you may want to search on google for "changing xp product key" (fouth entry). It just tells you how to change the number when you get a new copy so you don't have to go through the nause of reformatting the disc.
-
Thank you.. :thanks:.I will surely try that. I was just having a look at PC World and found one or two that I think have their own power supply....would you mind confirming for me....they are:-
Connect up to 7 USB devices
Add new peripherals -no power down on PC
Functions by itself or Belkin BusStation
Prevents damage to your PC at every port
7 port hub description
Connect 7 devices
Inc power supply
Customizable

Hi,
Thanks for the link.....I just went and had a look and I have to say that some of the reviews are a bit worrying :horror: :soz: I much prefer to buy stuff from real life stores....if they don't work I can take them back, but thanks anyway :thanks:
 Butterfly
-
I much prefer to buy stuff from real life stores...
That's an expensive habit! :horror: ;D ;D You do have a point though. Much as I enjoy Internet shopping, it is quite a hassle if you need to return something.
-
Well only the best for my 'puter :tony:........lol
:wave:Butterfly
-
No worries - hadn't read the reviews, just saw the average score :)
It's worth checking out local (non-PCWorld) stores as they tend to have much more competative prices. PCWorld do have some bargains but they make up for thase by being extortionate on others e.g. DVD-R. Usual price from online and fairs about £1 each for a good quality disc, £1.40 for a 4x Maxell in Staples - PCWorld 'packard bell' (not very good quality at all) = £3.90.
Recently been buying stuff from Comet, Staples, Argos and local stores. You also have the option of computer fairs (got one here on Sunday in fact).
Buying online is usually cheaper and you are covered by the distance selling act which means you have upto about 7 days to send the item back (at your expense) if you decide not to have it.
-
Well Butterfly, I am known as the forum Luddite (maybe it's because I still use a Sinclair Spectrum instead of a PC) but I have never found any problems ordering goods online. I have never been let down, the goods have always worked, delivery has been fast and the price has always been cheap. I usually go on forum members recomendations so why not give it a shot?
-
Hiya,
Well the way things have been going for me with this 'puter prob.......I'll be very lucky to get it to work within 7 days :brick: You're quite right though I should shop around.........I blame the big companies, the ones that make it easy for us to buy online! :peep:
:wave:Butterfly

Hi Luddite ;)
You sneaked that message in when I wasn't lookin'. I'll surely give it a try :thanks:

You've started something now, Clive.

Well Butterfly, I am known as the forum Luddite.
They extended the death penalty to include "frame breakers". Watch it Clive ;)

:kid2:I aspire one day to be a senior member and have 4 shiney stars :mg:......wonder if that will mean I'll have more problems :slightlymad: but then they do say you live and learn, I've certainly learned a lot in the short time I've had this problem with my 'puter and I've driven a few other people :slightlymad: with it......including the guy on the helpline :slug:......lol
Thanks everyone for all your help....I'll keep you updated (no it has nothing to do with the cool icons) :damn:

:chill: your self. the luddites were also known as "frame breakers" & did get the death penalty.
I was having a swipe at Clive for being the forum luddite, not at you ;D. just a joke that's all ;)

Hi Nutter......gawd I'm glad I'm not a Luddite then (no offence to Luddites) Luddites, I think! mmmm.....I feel a reasearch mode coming on :wtf:or is that another USB serial murderer hub nightmare creeping up on me? :gss:
I'm off now to contemplate :snooze:
:wave:Butterfly

Contemplate well :snooze: :dream:
-
Hiya,
After much contemplation :snooze: and a little research I have come to the conclusion that I would also have been a Ludditess :mg: those poor people :'( I found this on my research trip and thought I could share it with you
The Tintwistle Weavers Daughter
There was a weavers daughter born
When loaves were big and cheap
Work was forbid on a Monday
Tho work enough for keep
His daughter grew pretty and fine
On meat and bread he'd bring
And bloomed the human face divine
Her light sweet voice would sing
But your debts and taxes want pay'd
Coined of the poor and dead
Your Orders and council kill trade
And weavers cry for bread
So bent the daughter to her fate
From work she did not cower
She beam'd the yarn from Manchester
And dress'd the warp with flour
She beams the yarn from Manchester
And dresses warp with flour
The shuttle flies from morn til night
And rests at a late hour
From morn til night she cannot cease
Her life is nowt but toil
She has not time for love or sport
Her blooming flowers spoil
Still your debts and taxes want pay'd
Coined of the poor and dead
Your Orders and French wars hurt trade
And weavers cry out for bread
She bends no more to her poor lot
A life of nowt but toil
Enriching the mighty and great
While her own flowers spoil
She cries aloud her hero's name
Her Sherwood hero Ludd
Will set a stop to wars and steam
And wages as they stood
:'(
 Luddites (but don't kill anyone please)

Hiya,
Okay 'puter prob......the following is part an e-mail to me from a friend of a friend :sanity:
"Internal USB ports are powered by the computers own internal power supply. This means that USB ports have a total output of 500mA (milliAmps in case you're wondering lol) Sadly, most broadband external modems which plug into the USB port take near enough (if not more) the full 500mA, which leaves no room to power anything else. Broadband modems are not usually self powered. That is, they are not powered from it's own power supply via a transformer"
Okay.......I checked my modem....it has 3 power cables leading from it....one from the wall to modem (big white cable that screws into back of modem from Cable company)......one from modem to USB port....and one from modem to power supply :wtf:.....i take it this means that the modem has it's own power supply? If so.........what the hell do I do now? Do I still buy the self powered serial USB hub? :wahh:
:wave:Butterfly
-
Yes Butterfly, a powered hub is usually more reliable for heavier power usage devices.
As you said the modem is self powered but there may be a power supply problem at your USB ports so a powered hub would eliminate that.
I think that your friend is incorrect when he states "This means that USB ports have a total output of 500mA", as each port should be able to supply 500 mA.
Some of the newer motherboards have 6 usb ports as standard plus pins to add another 2 or 4 at the front of the case, so unless you were using low current devices such as a mouse or webcam then you would soon run out of available power if it was as your friend thinks :)
-
Hi Sandra,
:thanks: I was so confused about this....nothing new there then 8)
Okay....I'm off to get one and I'll let you know what happens. I see some light at the end of the tunnel :hatoff:
Thanks again

That poem must be seriously old Butterfly. ;D ChorleyDave will have to remind me when we were last at war with France.
-
Hiya Clive,
Yip if I remember correctly around 1812-17......not entirely sure of the year but it's yonks ago. I seem to remember something about the Luddites being taught in History class at school but that was yonks ago too and you know what kids are like in History Class :naughty:

Hi Guys,
:tony:I just can't take any more! :'( I bought a powered USB hub (Belkin Hi Speed USB 2.0 4-port Hub £25 from Argos) I uninstalled the printer software and rebooted........ I connected the hub....fine....I plugged in printer, windows detected it..put CD in and installed the printer software....a little window came up from printer software asking me what type of cartridge the printer was using......I didn't get a chance to click anything, my 'puter froze again :brick:
What am I doing wrong???
:curse:Butterfly
-
p.s...should I plug cable modem into serial hub? ??? :'(
-
The modem should be ok left in the pc port Butterfly.
Usually with USB devices they like the software installing before the hardware.
I would disconnect the all in one thing and unistall the software then reinstall the software from the cd and it will probably ask you to connect the device once its installed the software :)
-
Hi Sandra,
It didn't work like that I tried it...but...   ....I now have cable modem plugged into serial USB hub & I have printer plugged into it too......everything working fine so far.....well it didn't freeze after the log in screen and I'm here writing this post.....I'm so excited :wahh:
You think this is going to be okay the way I've done it? or am I gonna blow myself and 'puter up? :o
Lots of Love

Should be no problems at all.
Though if you do smell smoke.......... :)
(Actually had that happen once when someone put the USB headers onto the motherboard the wrong way....this caused the 5V to connect directly to ground and strange blue smoke started coming from the computer)
-
:mg:
-
If it aint broke dont fix it ;)
It does sound as if you are seriously underpowered on your pc though.
Have you got some details/specifications of your pc ?
If you are unsure there is a free program, Belarc Advisor, that you can download from here :
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
You could install that and post some screenshots to let us know what you are running :doggie:
-
Ummm....just checked Argos webite and it wouldn't be this hub would it?
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=1751&productId=89895 (http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=1751&productId=89895)
Can you just confirm it's got a separate power supply and doesn't get it's power from the USB bus (as thats the problem you've got with the printer and modem).
-
Hiya Sandra,
Okay I've downloaded that and have the profile summary here......what is it you would like to see?.......do I just copy paste it to here? It's gobbledegook to me :-\
Butterfly
-
Can do that or if you know how to do a screen shot of the various bits of info then you could attach them here.
Can never have too much information Butterfly, number and type of IDE drives etc, type of cpu and make and model of motherboard.
Any external devices attached, amount and type of RAM (memory) etc :)
-
Hiya,
Yes that's the one but it doesn't look like that at all....it's oval shaped and black......it has a seperate power supply.
:)Butterfly
-
Just a thought Butterfly, please dont think that I assume that you are a blonde ;)
You have got the power switched on to the usb hub have you ?
As they will still work on some devices with the power off, as we are suspecting that power is the problem then it would need to be plugged in and switched on to get the benefits :)

Yes thats fine thanks, I assume that its a Time Computer as I had a 450 with a PAG 2130 board and similar specs.
I had a problem with a USB modem on mine, some kind of conflict with the Fujitsu adsl modem and the Via chipsets.
I had to fit a seperate PCI usb card to get it to work.
If its working ok now though thats not likely to be your problem.
It may be a good idea to download and install the latest Via 4 in 1 drivers from here though :

Hi Sandra,

I have a spare USB port on 'puter now so should I plug it into that?

Run everything you can from the powered hub Butterfly.
It supplies 500mA to each port, the same as your PC does but with having its own power supply will be better regulated and reliable :)
