Title: New Build House - Network Help
Post by: Moreno on May 13, 2013, 13:11
Hi Guys,

It has been a little while since my last post, good to see the forum is doing well.

As the title suggests, I purchased a new build property (townhouse) on the weekend and am now thinking about how I am going to run my network through it. Unfortunately, the walls have been plastered, so I cannot run network cable through them going to the next floors

I have noticed that in most of the rooms they have a wall plate which consists of some power sockets, TV socket and then a BT socket, which I assume is telephone cable to be able to connect a phone or modem. My question is this, if I was to connect a modem/router to one of these points, this should give me internet and then a wifi signal in that area and then allow me to have a wired connection to my media player, but can I then have another modem/router upstairs plugged into another phone point doing exactly the same thing on that floor?

Ok, if this is a yes, will the NAS downstairs plugged into the modem directly, be seen and recognised by a media player upstairs?

Thanks

I don't think you can use more than one modem / router on one line, but there are devices such as this:

http://www.netgear.co.uk/home/products/wireless-range-extenders/WN3500RP.aspx

Or you can get a system called Homeplugs, which will extend your wireless network via the power points throughout the house.

Thanks, but I don't think I will be able to stream HD movies from my NAS to the media player with either of these options. I think I will have to just lay flat Cat6 cable under the carpet.

There may be a better solution, but we're a bit thin on network techies at the moment.  You might get some more ideas from here:
