Title: Leave of absence
Post by: Michelle on July 24, 2005, 00:20
I am writing for permisson for leave, as I am moving home tomorrow and british telecom are that busy they cannot connect my line for 3 weeks! That seems excessive to me? Anyway I've called and called and the last person said - hmmm thats funny your line is ringing, so maybe you won't need an engineer? ..... I've not checked yet as this is my last night in this house. Which reminds me BT should have disconnected this line at 10pm, how am I on line? LOL

Anyway if I'm not around I will be soon, with more tales no doubt of the dreaded mesh!

cheerio

Good luck Michelle.

When I moved here in 1998, I rang BT from the phone in the house and asked them to change it to my name.
They said that there wasnt a line at my address and that it was probably an extension from the house next door.
I said well I am ringing you on it and it didnt appear to be an extension as the houses either side had a different number

I had the same problem with the gas too as no one knew who the supplier was.
I was told to ring Transco as they own the pipe that the gas companies use and they would know who the supplier was.
They said that I wasnt connected to their pipe but they didnt know anyone else who could have gas piped to my house

Eventually it was all sorted out when they realised that they had my house number wrong and had added 10 to it for both the phone and the gas  :?

All moved, BT Line in, But no BB yet, could take 10 days?  Ah well at least by the time Broadband is ready I should have a new computer!

Yes ........ Mesh has agreed the poxy thing has a faulty hard drive, and once they receive the software back (sent yesterday via recorded delivery) they will put the money in my account, they say I will have it by end of week/beginning of next week.  I won't hold my breath but I'm just pleased I didn't have to take them to court.

At work now, so I'd best get off this puter and get back home and unpack some more boxes!

Hope you are all well

You just missed an Aldi special last thursday Michelle  :(

There may be one left somewhere if you ring around, 3.2 ghz P4 with everything you would need for £499, leaves you with plenty of left over cash from the Mesh price to get whichever monitor you fancy  :)

Hey I'm offically back now, That was a quick ten days wasn't it.

You moving too Simon, oh its a nightmare lol - start packing now. I still have a few boxes to unpack but most is done now.

I spoke to Mesh Wednesday/Thursday and friday, just keeping up behind them, they are so crap, first my refund was approved by the guy I sent my CDs too, then the manager had to approve it, then it goes to accounts and then it takes 48hrs, accounts have it now.

I will have to have a ring around on monday then, see if I can find an Aldi spare.

If not I'm down to PC World, at least they are just down the road if there is a problem lol

DONT DO IT!!!! :-) I got my laptop from PC World, I don't know why I did thinking of it! but it was a good year ago and I've had nothing but problems, though I have to say their customer support is getting much better. Heck anything has to be better than the Mesh stuff.

I'd take a look at ebuyer.com aswell, they have some good systems on their from time to time. If I had the time and you were a bit closer I'd build ya one but then you dont have any warranty...thats an idea PC Pals PC Building with technical support from here :-)

...if this has turned into a nonsensical rampage I do apologise - thats what the start of the footy season gets ya!

Mesh nightmare up date.

Guess what...... they have still not put my refund through.  I was told definately friday then, definately yesterday ... called today - not been done. So this is a week late now, if they do it today I won't have it until friday.

Oh and isn't it funny how all the managers are at lunch or in a meeting, the best I've managed to get is a supervisor calling me back, I have spoken to this guy before so we'll start with him.

I've also informed trading standards of this delay, and see if they will do anything about it.

Soooooo annoyed.

They are selling them a lot more frequently now.

I am well pleased with mine and have had no real problems apart from a noisy fan which seems to be the norm with medion.

what do you think of this

Intel Pentium 4 Processor 650

3.4GHz Clock-Speed

800MHz Front Side BUS

1024 Mb DDR RAM Memory

400 Gb Hard Disk Capacity

I wouldn't mind a new printer too, smaller monitor than I'd wanted.
I'm not sure these graphics are up to much? Simon? It does seem alot of money but when I was looking before this machine was 1499.00 without the printer?

The second one certainly had the higher spec graphics, but you could always update that anyway.  My God, the size of those hard drives!  :ooo:  I do have a slight concern over these enormous hard drives, in that it must take a fortnight to format one of them!  Also, should you ever in one lifetime, manage to fill one up, that's a hell of a lot of data to lose if it goes wrong.  I wonder why the second one is half the price of the first?  I know the first one has a Pentium, but that shouldn't make quite that difference in price.
Title: Leave of absence
Post by: Michelle on August 19, 2005, 23:10
I guess cos the first one was in the PC bundle part and the second one in just in base units.

Yeah I guess I need only half of that hard drive really, I'm more concerned about graphics.

I've no idea on the athlon which is the best one - what do there numbers mean.

Everytime I open MSN on this it bleedin crashes, lol

The amd 3500 + runs at 2.2 ghz the intel runs at 3.4ghz.
Not sure if that one is 64 bit or not.

Quote
AMD has since attained both of these goals, and has released their 90nm Winchester in a number of 939-pin iterations. The Athlon 64 3500+ matches its 130nm predecessor and runs at 2.2 GHz, while the Athlon 64 3200+ and 3000+ hit 2.0 and 1.8 GHz clocks speeds, respectively. These last two processors fill a very real market niche for AMD, as Socket 939 supplies dual-channel DDR for the masses and these processors hit the needed sub-$200 price point. The single-channel DDR controller on the Socket 754 processors is certainly powerful, but keep in mind that Intel holds the mindset by allowing even entry-level Celeron CPUs to enjoy dual-channel DDR performance.

In terms of outward physical design, there is no difference between the current 90nm and 130nm Athlon 64 Socket 939 models, and the internal architecture also remains mostly unchanged. The 90nm Athlon 64 3500+, 3200+ and 3000+ feature 128K L2 and 512K L2 cache levels, and include an integrated dual-channel DDR controller. The core voltage has been lowered slightly, with the new 90nm processors running at 1.4V, down from the 1.5-1.55V of their 130nm cousins.

Quote
Intel introduces the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor with HT Technology targeted for desktop PCs and entry-level workstations. This Pentium 4 processor features 800MHz FSB and 2MB cache in the LGA775 package. This new package is pin-less and implements a 4 wire fan control for improved thermal acoustics. This Pentium 4 processor is designed to deliver performance across applications and usages where end-users can truly appreciate and experience the performance. These applications include Internet audio and streaming video, image processing, video content creation, speech, 3D, CAD, games, multimedia, and multitasking user environments.

The AMD only has 512 kb L2 cache, the standard Intel P4 now has 1mb.
This Intel has 2mb L2 cache which is massive and will really allow the CPU to do its stuff   :)

As its using a 32 bit OS there wont be much advantage until you upgraded to a 64 bit OS and they bring programs out that are written for 64 bit cpus.

The graphics on the first are rather outdated now, the second is about the minimum spec now.

As Simon says you could upgrade theGFX but if you can wait for an Aldi Medion then you will find that you have the first ones features with a PCI express GFX card, 2 to 4 x faster than any 8x AGP card although they only come with 512mb ram I think and it may be the Intel P4 cpu with the 1mb L2 cache.

I would rather buy a tower alone that way I could buy the printer and monitor I wanted rather than as a bundle.

Hope this hasnt added to your confusion Michelle

Thanks for that fab reply sandra!

Its a bit clearer now, so the p4 is better - shame that graphic card on the first one is so poor. I think it is quite an old line in machines, thats why they've reduced them so much.

I don't really want to get a machine I have to upgrade right away.

Quote

Did joudi write this bit? lol sorry!

So I need a P4 2mb L2 cache 64 bit - is that right?

I saw a medion in toy'r'us not sure what one it was but it was a reasonable price, but what would the support be like, straight to medion I guess. Although I really want 1024 ram.

The current versions of XP are 32 bit operating systems.
The next version of XP which is still in Beta testing mode I think, is a 64 bit OS.
To get the benefit of a 64 bit CPU then you need the correct 64 bit operating system and the programs that support 64 bit usage  :)

.Just been looking on Ebuyer for cpu prices Michelle.

There must be some reason for the Intel being over twice the price, I suspect its quality and performance  :)

AMD (Venice) Athlon 64 3500+ 939pin 512Kb L2 Cache 90nm Retail Boxed Processor With 3 Year Warranty and Fan Included.
  £133.12
£156.42 inc VAT

Intel Pentium 4 650 3.4Ghz Socket 775 800mhz 2mb Cache Retail Boxed
  £274.78
£322.87 inc VAT

The P4 650 is 64 bit too I have found out  :)

RAM is relatively cheap now Michelle and very easy to get and add yourself.

As far as I know the support is quite good and I believe they have their own forum, Lona will know better than me about that.

Check that its the Intel P4 one and not the AMD one in toys R us, as you have already seen there is a big difference in the price between Intel and AMD based PCs  :(

Dual core seems to be the way that all CPUs are going to go in the future  :)

Its like having 2 CPUs in one. The first core does the normal boring everday stuff more or less like when its idling so runs like a 2.8 ghz with 1mb cache.
When you start using it for cpu intensive stuff like video editing/converting it uses the second core so its like adding another cpu for that bit.
A bit like a turbo charged PC  :)

I think that should do you for a lot of years to come Michelle, the GFX are ok its got the latest type of ram DDR 2 and plenty of it.

The screen alone would be around £250 and if the printer is a good one then as I said before you couldnt build it at that price  :)

Aldi medions come with a 3 year guarantee, not sure if thats Medion or Aldis guarantee, has that got the same ?

Graphics aren't great though .... still better than most I've seen for that price, its a good price isn't it.   Not sure if the printer option is only if you buy on line and its only until the 25th August!

I was looking at the guarentee, it sounds like its only a year, but they come out to you if there is a problem, I might have to check that out.

You wont get better GFX than that with an AGP card Michelle, theyre supposed to be 2 X or 4 X faster than an 8 X AGP card.

This is ebuyers price for the Intel Pentium D 820 2.8ghz :

Intel Pentium D 820 2.8Ghz Skt775 Fsb800 2 x 1Mb Cache Retail
  £181.02
£212.70 inc VAT

I dont know how they can build that spec of pc for that price, and Medion dont appear to use cheap crappy parts.

Proper Intel CPU, ATI gfx and the TV cards are usually Tevion which seem quite good one. Lonas had a Pioneer DVD writer in so its not as if they do a Time and Tiny thing and use the cheapest parts they can get  :)

Doesn't that medion come with speakers? I didn't look.

That is a good one too cam, probably better you think?

I was looking at dell, but I'm nervous about their customer support, I've been reading bad things since they moved it to india.

But I guess you can read bad things about anyone if you look hard enough.

Apart from me obviously

Oi and me  :P  :D

They look almost identical and i'd say the little price difference is on the proccesor which is dearer in the Medion even though it's 2.8 as aposed to 3.0

It just gives you two options rather than one which just adds to the confusion

Oh and you of course :-)

Thats cos its a Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor - Its like Turbo, I know from a good source !

It doesn't take much to confuse me cammy, thanks for looking though!   I'm gonna go with the medion unless I can't get one.

Just spoke to toys r us, they have one left in the store with free printer still.

Have to see if its still there monday if my dosh is in then.

they did say they would keep it for me, but seeing as I've not seen the money yet I thought I'd better not, but they said they wouldn't put a ticket out on the machine, bit odd though, they didn't even take my name!

I hope they've sorted out the noise, I hated the noisey fan in the messsss computer....  not sure its that much newer than lona's though it was in there when I looked a while back.

OMG have a look on ebay at what you can get if you know what components you want

There's a London company with loads on there but not sure if you could see them running or not  :)

This is their terms on the assumption they stay in business

One advantage of the dual core cpu is that it should run cooler when its not being worked too hard so the fan will run slower, I think theyre variable speed dependant on how hot the cpu is.

A bit like the turbo analogy of a car again, when you dont need the power it just trickles along not using much of the available power, then when you put it under load or put your foot down in the car the turbo kicks in to boost the power  :)

The medion has speakers built into the monitor so they would only be stereo and probably not very good.

The 630 CPU is a cheaper one than the 650, its still a 64 bit but its a single core cpu, again ebuyer.com price :

Intel Pentium 4 630 3 Ghz Socket 775 800Mhz 2mb Retail Boxed
  £155.24
£182.41 inc VAT

Slightly faster but not a dual core.
I read a comparison review on dual core v single core but with faster cpu speeds last week.
For a dedicated gamer the single core had a slight advantage over the slower rated dual core, I guess its a bit like turbo lag to use the car analogy again.
For general use, especially if multi tasking then the dual core was the one to go for.

The Dell is good value as well but hasnt got a few things that the medion  has such as the digital tv tuner card, dont know if thats something youd use or want but it would swing it for me along with the dual core cpu as I am not a gamer but do lots of multitasking  :)

I suppose its handy for a standby one in case your cash doesnt come in time for the medion Michelle and you dont fanct waiting for another medion special offer from either toys r us or aldi or lydl  :)

Yes thats true Sandra, thanks for all the info.   I watched the little film they had on the Dual Core - very clever stuff.

I'm not a dedicated gamer but I do like to play games and I want them to be able to run fast enough. I am more an all rounder I like to do a bit of everything!

if u were a dedicated gamer then you would have to go amd, they stand out as better chips in the game tests (just look at a copy of pczone).
