Hi all,
Sometimes I feel lost when seeing the computer abreviations in the forum or somewhere else. Is there any interesting site which gives us the full meaning of those abreviations and if possible to explain to us what is that exactly and what is the function of that thing?
Thanks.
-
Can you give us some idea of the kind of abbreviations that are troubling you Joudi ???
-
Hi Sandra,
Well, there are many. But especially the pieces inside the PC. Some of them I know but some others not. My memoy is not good, but if I search in the forum I can tell many examples.
But anyway, it'll be good not to know the abreviations of the names of hardware, it'll be even better if there is a site which explains every abreviation and it's function.
Thank you.
-
Just a fast look on the forum I found some, although I know some of them.
Take some examples:
ATA
EIDE
CPU
ISP
ETC...
-
One site that gives the abbreviations is as follows;
http://www.articulates.net/abbrev.html (http://www.articulates.net/abbrev.html)
Hope it is of some use ;)

Thanks DJ1UK,
That's not bad at all. It's even good.
But it seems to me that it misses many abreviations.
If we can find more than that, and (if possoble) the role of everyone of them (for those which have certain function), that will be ideal.
Thanks a lot again.

Some more links....

Thanks again DJ1UK,
I think that the link in your first post is much better than those of second post.
If you can find better, it's great.
Thank you.

Just a fast look on the forum I found some, although I know some of them.
Take some examples:
ATA
EIDE
CPU
ISP
Sometimes its not necessary to know the full names as they are often just as meaningless to me Joudi, usually as long as you know for example that the EIDE is the type of drive that connects to the IDE channel on the motherboard (E,I think is just enhanced IDE although I stand to be corrected).
ATA is the soon to be standard replacement for IDE.
I know that CPU is Central Processing Unit and that ISP is Internet Service Provider but the rest often just become a name in itself to me,such as DMA and UDMA.
I would have thought that the abbreviations are fairly universal as english seems to be the main PC language similar to the way that it is now accepted as the "norm" for nautical and aeronautical communications.
This will probably make the abbreviations and acronyms easier for a non native english speaker to learn what that thing is rather than its full name :-*
-
I know what you mean Joudi :)
Its when they start to get technical and say connect the IPJ to the CFP and get a new RTO for the TPW (for example) - its like a different language to me.
I just ask what does that mean? If I don't know, which is most of the time
-
That's exactly so Michelle.
And of course, we don't wan't those professionals to continue using that language for themselves alone. We can join them and tell: Hey....We too can understand that! So don't continue feeling upon us!
Right Michelle?
And if we can learn more, why not? ;)
Sandra,
That's what I need. Like the way you are explaining these things. So, if there is a dictionary or site on internet who can do that it's very good.
-
Thats true Joudi!
And one of these days we will be joining in with them.
Especially if we keep coming in here ;)
-
I agree it is better to know than not to know but in the same way that some people dont know what R.S.V.P and Q.E.D. etc. are in full they know what they mean,I think that PC terminology is much the same :)
-
And one of these days we will be joining in with them.
Yes Michelle, one day we must become "Techies" like them.
You see....You've started today to be on the correct way. You had a correct suggestion. Go on, and soon you'll be beyond Adept ;)
Me, poor man, it'll take me a little while more. But anyway, I'll join that group (I hope). :D
Go on Michelle :gofor:
-
 You have good faith in me Joudi but I think that it would take me many years to get where they are. :)
-
Or, I have another idea:
What if those Techies make for us a list or a page in the forum in which they put the most common abreviations used, to let us understand what they are talking about when they solve certain problem.
If possible, the abreviations and little explanation about each (as Sandra did a little before in her post).
Michelle, if they don't do that for us, that means they don't want us to catch up with them. Also that means they are afraid of us. Right?
-
You make the list Joudi and I will try my best to answer them as I would probably leave lots out that you wanted to know :(
-
That's not an easy mission for me. It means that I must search in the forum posts every where to pick them up.
If there is no other way, perhaps some others in the forum can help me. Everyone can get some and send them to Sandra. And by the time, perhaps you Sandra can add from time to time to that list.
If there is any other better suggestion, may be someone can tell it to us.
Thanks Sandra
But Sandra, Since when you are so kind?
I didn't know that before.
-
One which confused me when I first started posting on forums was "Mobo" as I had no idea what it referred to. But mobo = motherboard. ;D
-
Me too clive. It took certain time with me to discover it by myself.
-
Salut Joudi,je pense que je trouve que tu desire :)

-
I must say joudi it does sound a good idea but I can see how it would be difficult to put together.
:D
My goodness, there are alot on that link ! :o ;)
-
Well it tells you what the full names are Michelle but may not be of much use as knowing what RAM is doesnt necessarily help you to know what it does or how it does what it does but at least its a start I hope :)
I have put a link to that site in the Useful Sites section and made it a "sticky" so it should be easier to find.
If anyone can find any better ones they can be added to it later,I will add the others that have been found to it now :)
-
Thanks Sandra,
Sorry for being late. I had my internet connection cut during more than 2 hours. I just got it back.
Thanks for the link. I got another one:
http://www.lemarsu.net/abrev/a-b.html
and I thik what DJ1UK mentioned is very good, but unfortunately is too short. In fact, I'm searching like it:
http://www.sgi.ethz.ch/abbrev_and_explan_en.html
So, I'll continue searching on my side, and if someone finds like it or better that will be great.
Thanks
-
Thanks Sandra and Joudi :)
That SGI site is good as it does have the explainations, not many on it though as you say.
Still its a start :)
-
Like yourself Joudi, I have bother understanding all these intitials. I never knew that a PSU was power supply unit. Why all these abbreviations need to be used I know not why. ???
This is quite a good site for newbies. :)

That's great Lona. It seems to me that this is what I am in need. I tried some abreviations and it worked nicely. I hope it works later for all what I need.
Thanks a lot. :thanks:
-
I will add it to the main list in the useful sites thread then on your recommendation Joudi :)
-
Thanks Sandra. I knew you were going to do it and I was waiting, thinking that after a certain time if you missit I was going to mention that to you.
Could be the best to put it as first link in that section.
Thanks Sandra.
-
Ok I have added it to the first one for you Joudi :doggie:
-
How lovely it was to read such a polite thread  8)

Again to abreviations Simon. What did I do to you to torture me?
What does it mean "SOD OFF"?
-
Ah! "Sod off" is not an abbreviation. It means "go away" but is almost always said as a jest.
