Well done, Leiston, and good luck!

Chorley's 100% start to the season came to an end today.  They drew 0-0 with AFC Fylde.  Not a bad result, as Fylde stated the season as 6/4 second favourites for the title, behind AFC Chester (formerly Chester City) who started at evens.

FA Cup Third Round Qualifying Replay: Saturday 9th October 2010

Three goal Heath’s hot run continues

Leiston 5 North Greenford United 0

A first half hatrick from leading scorer Gareth Heath set Leiston on their way to a comprehensive victory at the expense of Step Four Zamaretto Central Division North Greenford United. On a fine, dry afternoon Leiston welcomed back Heath and Ottley-Gooch while Calver was injured, Hammond cup tied and Smy suspended. Leiston began attacking the Fairground End and soon made their intentions clear. However it was the visitors who had the first shot at goal but Pither’s strike was straight at Stannard. Two minutes later Leiston got their first corner and from Harrop’s delivery Jallow turned over S Head’s header. Greenford looked eager to get the ball forward at speed but were restricted to shooting from distance, Stannard holding another shot from distance this time from Delisser. Leiston looked the more threatening and from a fine run and cross from Cunningham, Jallow fumbled but the ball fell just behind Heath and Turner was able to clear. Leiston’s pressure finally told on 20 minutes. Heath released the over lapping Saker inside the box who was then brought down by Fenton resulting in a penalty. Greenford contested the decision for a few minutes and after Fenton received his yellow card, Heath stroked home the penalty. A minute later Cunningham’s cross eluded Jallow and struck the top of the bar. Cunningham then became the second name to go into Referee Crysell’s book for a late challenge on Hillier as he crossed before a great run from Brothers, starting in his own half and ending with a shot from 20 yards was saved low to his right by Jallow. The tall Greenford custodian looked uncomfortable all half and on 34 minutes he was powerless to deny Leiston a second goal. Boardley’s left win throw was flicked on by D Head and the visiting defence dallied allowing Heath the time to thrash a shot home from ten yards. Leiston were completely in charge although Pither warned them of their danger with a great strike from the edge of the box that was only inches wide. But Leiston were too strong for Greenford and with four minutes of the half remaining added a third goal and again from the penalty spot. Harrop and Heath raced clear from halfway with Harrop releasing Heath inside the box. Jallow raced from his goal and crudely brought down the Leiston midfielder in full flight giving the Referee an easy decision in pointing to the spot. Jallow then received a straight red card for his troubles while Hibbs was substituted for Reserve keeper Sills to take over in goal. His first job was to get the ball out of the net as Heath confidently dispatched the penalty for his hatrick and 16th goal of the season. It was also his 9th goal in the FA Cup this season. The half closed with Stannard making a smart save low at his right hand post to deny Tilbury. After such an irresistible first half, the tempo was always going to drop. But Leiston were then dealt a blow on 55 minutes as Wardley fell awkwardly blocking Lawrence’s cross. After treatment the Leiston left back was stretched from the field with what looked like a nasty leg injury. Three minutes later Harrop added a fourth after a clever exchange with Simon Head, racing clear to stroke past Sills. The game now had a testimonial feel to it with Leiston dominating and a fine stop from Sills denied Heath another goal on 65 minutes after a great five man move. Greenford’s cause got worse on 71 minutes when after a midfield melee, Delisser received a second yellow thus reducing the visitors to nine men. Leiston continued to probe for further goals and were rewarded deep into stoppage time as the unmarked S Head nodded home Saker’s right wing cross to complete the emphatic victory.

Leiston’s scintillating first half display set them on their way to victory with the lethal Heath instrumental yet again. A fine display from all involved but sadly marred by the nasty injury to Shane Wardley who looks like being sidelined for several weeks.

Leiston: Stannard, Saker, Wardley (Ottley-Gooch 55 mins), D Head, Goldfinch, Cunningham, Harrop, Heath (Kerslake 78 mins), S Head, Boardley, Brothers (Norfolk 78 mins). Subs not used: Block and Payne.

North Greenford United: Jallow, Hillier, Fenton (Patterson 69 mins), Turner, Diston, Tilbury, Delisser, Hibbs (Sills 41 mins), Pither (Derry 69 mins), Lawrence, Kenny. Subs not used: Senior and O’Connell.

FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying: Saturday 23rd October 2010

Battling Blues are still in the hat

Leiston 0 Dartford 0

Suffolk's remaining Non League side in this years FA Cup will be in tomorrow's televised First Round draw after holding Blue Square South Dartford to a stalemate at Victory Road. There was little to seperate the two sides and they must now do it all again on Tuesday at Princes Park. Leiston were without the injured Shane Wardley, suspended Angelo Harrop and cup tied Luke Hammond but had Matt Stace on the bench following his return from Brantham Athletic.

The visitors started strongly with the stiff breeze on their backs with the home side a little tentative in their play. Dartford, three Leagues higher up the pyramid, bossed the opening quarter and Charlie Sheringham appealed for a twelfth minute penalty following David Head's challenge but Referee Porter was unimpressed. Three minutes later home custodian Jamie Stannard made a fine stop to deny Charlie Sheringham (under the watchful eye of his Dad Teddy in the stand) after Ollie Berquez had flicked on John Whitehouses goal kick with Charlie Sheringham getting goal side of the home defence but Jamie Stannard was equal to his effort. Leiston were defending stoutly and Mark Goldfinch did well to deny Lee Burns a shot at goal while Gareth Heath blocked Charlie Sheringham's goalbound strike inside the box. Leiston finally gained a foothold into the game and Michael Brothers tormented Tom Bonner before forcing John Whitehouse into a low save to his right. Danny Cunningham's attempted lob was held by John Whitehouse under his bar and on the stroke of half time the home side created their best chance. Leon Ottley-Gooch's left wing cross was not dealt with by Paul Goodacre but Danny Cunningham's well controlled volley was straight at John Whitehouse.

With the wind on their backs Leiston gained the upper hand in the second half. Michael Brothers fine diagonal pass released Leon Ottley-Gooch but his first touch was heavy inside the box and John Whitehouse was grateful to gather. Leiston's approach play belittled their League status offering more creativity against Dartford's direct style. With the game entering the final twenty minutes, Dartford made a trio of substitutions in an attempt to win the tie. On 70 minutes Lee Burns cut in from the right and forced Jamie Stannard into conceding a corner while moments later the home side missed their best chance of the game. Gareth Heath went marauding from his own half and with the visiting defenders retreating, supplied Danny Smy with the perfect pass. The Leiston striker managed to beat the onrushing John Whitehouse but then watched agonisingly as his shot rolled the wrong side of the visitors right hand post. As the game closed Substitute Carl Rook tested Jamie Stannard while Michael Brothers blazed over further good work by Gareth Heath. In the end a draw was the right result.

Leiston deservedly take their place in tomorrow's televised First Round draw and will give Dartford a stiff challenge in Tuesday's replay. As the game progressed it became clear that a single goal would be enough but neither side could muster it. You couldn't see three League's between the sides which was to Leiston's credit.

Leiston: Stannard, Saker, Boardley, D Head, Goldfinch, S Head, Cunningham (Calver 82 mins), Heath, Smy, Ottley-Gooch, Brothers. Subs not used: Norfolk, Stace, Kerslake and Block.

Dartford: Whitehouse, Burgess, Bonner, Champion, Goodacre, White (Harris 65 mins), Noble, Berquez (Haynes 69 mins), Sheringham (Rook 67 mins), Burns, Bradbrook. Subs not used: Shinn, Bruce, Burchell and Young.

Allglass Man of the Match: Mark Goldfinch

Winning the league is more important at our level.  I know the prize money is useful, but getting up the leagues has got to come first.  Let's face it, Leiston were never going to win the FA Cup,  but they progressed through the stages and picked up a nice packet.

Well done for getting so far, Leiston.  :)

Post by: chorleydave on October 27, 2010, 23:18
The same thing happens at Chorley.  There are so many cup competitions that (if you progress) you can go weeks without a league match.  For example, there is the "President's Cup".  If you lose in the first round you are then put into the "Chairman's Cup".  Not sure what happens after that as I don't watch mickey mouse matches, but it's probably the Physio's Cup or the Kit Man's Cup.  Then there is the Lancashire Trophy and the Northern Premier League Cup, not to mention the FA Cup and FA Trophy.
