Title: Windows Shutdown
Post by: GillE on June 25, 2020, 00:57
In the past I would switch off my Windows PC by using the 'power' icon on the start menu and it would shut down completely.  I'd then have to physically press the 'on/off' button on my tower to re-start it.  Nowadays I can re-start my PC by simply pressing one of the 'up/down' arrows on my keyboard.  Should this worry me?

That doesn't happen with my PC Specialist laptop.

It seems it might be going into hibernation mode rather than completely powering down, Gill.  I'm not on mine at the moment so I can't tell you exactly where it is, but in the main Settings, have a look at the Power settings and check the Shutdown settings.

I agree with Simon on this.

What happens if you right click on the windows key in the bottom left of your keyboard and then select shut down. Also does an hibernation option appear there as well as sleep?

I have a PC Specialist computer as well, Clive, although mine is a tower PC.

I've checked the settings and the machine is set to shut down.  There is no hibernation option when I click on hte windows key - just 'sleep', 'shut down' and 'restart'.

Issue resolved!

The 'Fast Startup' option was selected - disabling it allows the machine to switch off completely.
