Title: Re Building a pc- Motherboard problem
Post by: monster on March 08, 2004, 15:54
Hi guys.

I am rebuilding a pc that i got over the summer.  I have problems when i shut down windowsXP Pro.  When i press the power button the system restarts!! so i bought a new motherboard an ASROCK K7S8X which i am using an Amd duron 800 cpu. installed the motherboard yesterday and i reconnected everything but i had no display. I have never fitted a motherboard before and no doubt i am going to have to play around with some jumpers. can anyone advise??

Hi Monster,

Not an expert by any means, but I have built one or two PCs myself.  I have found that most motherboards work pretty much out of the box, and don't usually require a lot of tweaking.  Can you get anything from the monitor at all?  If you can get into the BIOS (by pressing the Delete key during startup), it might just be a question of enabling either the on board graphics, or a separate graphics card, depending what you have installed.

The shutdown problem?  Is that the reason you started the rebuild, i.e. was it doing it before?  I was just wondering if you might have connected the leads from the On / Off switch and the Reboot button the wrong way round on the motherboard?  Not even sure if that's possible, without opening mine up.

Hopefully more of an expert will bail us out this evening!   ;D

I have always had the problem and have tried connecting the connectors in different ways but still get the same problem.  It is really iritating coz i have to keep pulling the powercord from the back of the machine!!

i am going to try a few things to the motherboard tonight as i have put the old one back in for the mean time.

Assuming XP Pro is the same as the Home Edition, if you go into Control Panel > Performance and Maintenence > Power Options, and get the screen below, it might be that the setting for the power button is set to Restart?  Just a thought.

What FSB setting are the MOBO jumpers set at, check em against the Duron FSB.

I just did a re build, existing Duron 1300Mhz on to a new K7S8EX,like yours, at first the screen was blank. So I dropped the jumper setting on the MOBO to FSB 200Mhz, and WALLA we had Vision on.

By the way WELCOME to the board monster.

Sorry guys was a bit tired when i posted the last memo. I moved the jumpers around to get it working. only to find that my cpu fan has stopped working so it keeps shutting down due to the onboard protection.!!!

If its not one thing its another.

It was a simple problem of having a faulty fan!!! I think that the fan had not worked for a while. as the old motherboard had the overheat cut out facility turned off.  Have all of the problems sorted now and i am a happy camper!!

Cheers for all the help
