Does it make the same noise as its booting up ?
If so it could be a sign that your hard drive is on its way out  :(

They spin at 5400 rpm for the older drives, 7200 rpm for the newer drives, Serial ATA are now around 10500 rpm.
Wear and tear on the bearings causes the platters to wobble putting more strain on the bearings which eventually leads to a noisy drive failure.
There are also the arms which read and write to the drives, they are constantly moving across the drive and they like any mechanical device can wear out.
The electronics that control the drives operation and the drives motor itself can burn out or develop faults too.
These are just some of the ways that a drive can suddenly fail  :(

All things come to an end, usually a week or two after the warranty has run out.
Thats why you should always back needed stuff up regularly  :)

I'm sure Jam will appreciate your more constructive comments, Sandra.   ;)

Jam, it would be advisable to start backing up anything you need to keep safe, in case your hard drive suddenly fails.

Optimistically, there's a chance it could just be one of your fans on it's last legs, because they can make funny noises, but from what you've described, it sounds more likely to be the hard drive, so yes, I would start backing up.   :-\

Hi Jaminxz

I had a similar problem recently and it turned out it was the PSU unit that was on it's way out. Have you checked inside your case to see if it is clogged up with dust?. When I checked mine it was solid with dirt and the fan was not able to work properly. :)

most ide hardrives last about 6 years, if they're running constantly, you can set the power management to turn off your hds after you being away from your comp for 10mins or more. Doing this will go along way to keeping your hd healthy.

If your hd just started to grind, and you decide to do nothing. Chances are the hd could last another 6 months or so, but you will notice it to start to slow down. Try going on ebay and finding a hd of around the same size and model. This way your reduce the chances of having to flash your mainboard because it won't except the bigger and newer model hd.

Ever have an old oscillating fan that started to slow down and make noises? Did your folks throw it out or just take some machine oil and lube it up? People do fix hds that are going it but it requires a clean room and specialized machinery. You can get your hd fixed probably for a 300-1200 bucks depending on how you want your information back. On cd or in a completely rebuilt hd.
