Title: Catch 22
Post by: daveeb on April 21, 2004, 21:54
my brother subscribed to bt yahoo recently on his XP machine.  to get the "free" antivirus you had to go online.  surprise surprise within about 10 seconds he'd been got by the msblaster virus.
if/when i get an xp machine in the future how can i prevent this happening as even the most up to date antivirus software pre-installed on the pc before going online may need updating against the very virus that infects it as soon as you go online. er if you know what i mean.  :P

Download everything you need now Dave and stick it on a CD ready to install when you get your new PC.

I think Microsoft are still supplying a Security Patch CD for free too. It might be worth getting hold of one of these to avoid having to download all of the patches.

At least get the Blaster Worm patch from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5FA055AE-A1BA-4D4A-B424-95D32CFC8CBA&displaylang=en), and put it on a floppy.  You can then install it before you go online.   :)
