I have been having problems for 5 days now with slow loading of web pages. I have checked my download and upload speed and everything checks out. I can download with no problems, but ordinary surfing pages take ages to load and I lose control of mouse. It doesn't matter whether I use IE6 or Mozilla, I have the same problems with both. My email downloads at normal speed so I can't think of what could be causing this problem. Offline, mouse and applications load ok. Even as I am typing this it is slow and jerky.
-
Sounds like spyware, Lona. Try running Ad Aware and Spybot, then, if that doesn't help, try it in Safe Mode with System Restore disabled (don't forget to reactivate it after). If all that fails, post a Hijack This log on here. :) By the way, have you got Spyware Blaster installed and updated?
Ad Aware (http://www.lavasoft.de/)
Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/)
Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/)
Hijack This (http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/)
-
Have you done a scan for viruses / spyware / trojans Lona?
-
I'm using Spy Chaser and also Ad-aware. I haven't ran them in safe mode so will try that and report back. Thanks. :)
-
Ran ad-ware and spy chaser and the only thing that was found was backweb which I have put in quarantine. I can't get Hijack this to download. Every time I click on the download button nothing happens. :-\
-
The download link seems to be down. :( Check your Hotmail, Lona.

Dack's the expert on Hijack This logs, but in the meantime, you could try Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/), Lona, as it often finds things Ad Aware doesn't.
-
I'm thinking, maybe there are some pages waiting to be printed.
or, did you try to disconnect some peripherics the one after the other?
Don't know if this can cause a matter like that:
O3 - Toolbar: &Radio - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSDXM.OCX
also, do you remember when that started to happen, after what action of your part?
But, at last, personally (I'm not a good example I think), I don't like the firewalls because they slow the system. Did you try to desactivate it for a while?
As a last suggestion, have a check on your HP installation and perepheric.
-
The only one that looks dodgy (and a half) is:
O16 - DPF: {10000001-1001-1001-1000-000000000000} - file://C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\kbQdhr.exe
Firstly extract HJT to a directory (otherwise it can't store the backups it makes).
Then boot in safe mode, run again and fix the entry above. Then reboot and see if it's any better.
If you internet search on the 10000001 etc. you'll find it has different names for each occurance. The one that Jourdi highlighted is the Microsoft Media player extension for Internet explorer and should be left in.
-
Would Lona have got that using Mozilla, Dack?
-
:pmsl: :believe: Simon, you never miss an opportunity

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
What does this bit mean, I've never seen that before. I thought it looked odd though?
-
And that needed fixing too :)
-
Did that and It's just the same. I've ran every conceivable check for spyware and don't know what else to do. I'm also getting this sokets trois V1 trojan trying to invade every 2 seconds but firewall is blocking it. :'(
-
Lona, it's quite conceivable that it may be your ISP on a temporary go-slow. This has happened to me on several occasions, sometimes for as long as 2 weeks. Take a look at your server status or ISPr forums to see if any faults are being reported. But if your ISP is as bad as mine, they won't ever admit to having a problem. Things just suddenly return to normal with no word of apology.

Do you know Clive, I'm beginning to think you're right. They did report an outage on 19th to 20th May but when I go in now it has disappeared and there is nothing to say it has been fixed. I have emailed them twice and they haven't answered. What made me think it might be spyware is that my email is downloading fast and so are other downloads, it's only browsing that's affected. I have been at this all day and evening trying all kinds of spyware programmes but to no avail. :(
-
I know I keep on about it, but all joking aside, it might be an idea to try a different browser, just to establish whether IE might be the problem, Lona. :)
-
Well Simon, I'm at the stage I will try anything. I have run spychaser, spybot, ad-aware, hijackthis and another one I found called the ultimate troubleshooter. What version of Mozilla do you advise.? :)
-
For ultimate stability, I would go for Mozilla 1.6 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/), Lona. Once you've downloaded it, if you only want the browser, you can choose 'Browser Only' during the installation process.
I was toying with recommending Firefox, but really, it's still in development. Mozilla 1.6 is fully finished and stable.
-
Mozilla 1.6 installed Simon. I am using it just now and just the same symptoms. Jerky mouse and pages loading slowly. :(. It can't be browser problems that's causing this. I don't know what else to try and pipex aren't answering my emails. I would hate to reformat just to find out it's a pipex fault. I will give it another day or two. :'(
-
It could also be a problem with your local exchange Lona. My ISP has a free status line which provides information like that. I should imagine that Pipex must have something similar.
-
Well, at least you have eliminated IE as being the culprit. It definitely sounds like it could be spyware, but you've done everything, and Dack would have spotted anything iffy in your Hijack This log. It sounds like your system is struggling to keep up for some reason.
Have you recently loaded any software, or anything? How are your resources generally? How much disc space do you have left? Not that you download much, of course. Is there anything in Task Manager which shows as using rersources heavily?
-
When I first boot up my resources are sitting at 80%. I checked just now and they are at 65%. I have 22gbts free on my hard drive so I wouldn't say I am overloaded. The only software I have downloaded recently has been all these spyware programmes. I also added memory not long ago and my ram is at 384mb. I have deleted as much as I can from my startup folder so don't know what else I can do.
-
You need to see what processor usage is being made by each application. I'd actually hazard a guess that your anti virus software is playing silly beggers (though I NEVER was a fan of Norton).
Edit:
Just been internet searching and you are not the only one having web slowdowns who has got Norton running - you didn't update it a few days ago did you? Might be worth a system restore.
-
As a matter of fact I did update Norton, Dack. Now there's a thought. ???
-
So did I on 3 pcs, all connected to pipex ADSL, and nothing like you are experiencing has happened to any of them Lona ???
-
Perhaps it just affects ME, Sandra? Mine has been updated too, with no side effects.
-
Have you tried connecting the modem to another USB Lona?
-
well I could help, but I know it would not be appreciated by the recipent, so I'll keep stum ;D
-
Good point Joudi, it could possibly be a problem with that particular USB port as USB ADSL modems draw close to the maximum power available at a port.
Tony, I dont think that Lona will ever trust you again after you reccommended a no smoking hotel for her in your area :o
-
Anyway that said, because I have a helpful disposition and I cannot help myself ::) Look at this link, it is the end page of a five page thread on the issue.
http://www.ndousers.com/cgi-bin/cutecast.pl?session=NjN66XLDA5itmqXpAJrXGbyBJn&forum=1&thread=496&page=5 (http://www.ndousers.com/cgi-bin/cutecast.pl?session=NjN66XLDA5itmqXpAJrXGbyBJn&forum=1&thread=496&page=5)
PS. OF course I did recommend to Lona an ISP with a helpfull support team :-X
-
Tony "You've got mail" :-*
Ok read that thread and how do I check to see if it's a USB problem?
-
You could start by plugging your modem into a different USB port, Lona. It might need to re-install, in which case you may need your modem installation CD.
-
You got mail Lona :-*
Just plugging it into another port, and your PC will auto recognise it, no need to reinstall the drivers. If that does not cure it, and considering every option had been tried in that 5 page support forum exersize I linked too, I personally would get BT out to it.
-
Problem solved folks. It was Norton Firewall that was the culprit. I uninstalled it and re-installed it and everything worked again. Don't ask me why cause I am not techie minded. It was just trial and error but got there in the end. Thanks for all everybodys help. :D
-
Glad it sorted at last Lona.
I've told you earlier that I don't like the firewalls. :)
-
I've told you earlier that I don't like the firewalls. :)
But it's still better to have one than not. ;)
-
Hi
Read your problem which solved mine, except that Norton live update has downloaded the same file which caused the problem in the first place. This time around it was no internet access at at all, just blank pages as if you are offline. I think the file
name is something to do with a redirection. Does anyone know the
correct mail address for Symantec to send a complaint to.
Also I have noted that my Norton anti virus programme shows
no virus defintions. I still have a few months of the update subscription to go, should I go elseware for my anti virus and firewall software, is the Panda product any good? Norton have
a major problem with an update that screws up windows ME users.
-
Hi JK
I found that it was mainly the firewall that caused the problem. I have uninstalled the firewall and installed zonealarm and things are back to normal. Norton antivirus is still installed with updates and working fine for now. If I find it acting up again I will let you know.
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zadb_zadown
-
You have a couple of PMs, JK, but as Lona suggested, one solution might be to use a different firewall. A lot of people like Zone Alarm, but personally, I prefer Sygate, which you can get from the link below.
Let me know if you can't get your subscriptions back for the anti-virus, and I'll try to help.
(https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.apax34.dsl.pipex.com%2Fsygate.jpg&hash=d316d3fde976972e6f2af10f1faf8079e7d27218) (http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm)

Hi Lona and Simon
Thank you both for your very kind comments.
I think this problem is a very major one as I looked at other IT
help sites inculding one for so called PC and IT experts.
Exactly the same problem, except they have not found the answer yet. Could not answer them as I would have to log on as a PC professional, which I am not. Simon the anti virus problem
occured after my last removal and reload of Norton firewall.
The part on the Norton program showing the date of the last
update instead now shows no virus definitions.
It looks likes Lona no longer uses Norton firewall is that correct? That may be why she has not had the problem come back again. Can you use another firewall with Norton anti virus?
Did try another one once Tiny, if think, did not work had to be removed. Then again why should we all change as Norton has a problem with an upgade file?
-
JK.....I'm still using Norton Antivirus and it is quite compatible with Zonealarm. I have been using it now all week without any problems. I even think PC is working a lot faster. I'm still however, getting that Sockets de Trois trojan coming in every now and again but ZA is blocking it.

Looks like Symantec messed up the live update for ME and 98 users in the 12th of May updates.
Lots of info on the link but worth a read.
Slowdown seems to come down to their redirector service which scans web pages as they download for viruses. Someone tried the verizon home page and it took 3 seconds to download without the update, 3 Minutes with the update.
-
I can't get that link to work, but there could be your answer, JK, thanks to Dack. :)
As this problem only seems to affect the Firewall, the best idea might be to change Firewalls, at least until the problem is sorted out. I'm very surprised that this has been ongoing since 12th May, without Symantec issuing a further update to repair things. Lona suggested Zone Alarm, and I suggested Sygate. Take your pick.
Once you have uninstalled Norton Firewall, check your definitions in Anti-Virus again, and if they have not re-appeared, try re-installing NAV. Make sure you do as much of this as possible, offline, so as not to put your system to uneccessary risk. You will have to uninstall Norton Firewall before installing an alternative.
Edit: Link working now. :o
-
It might be me being paranoid, but having read this thread, and some of Dack's link, even though the Norton problem is not supposed to affect XP, I thought I would try a different Firewall myself (having been using Norton for the last year), and I have to say that now using Sygate, my browsing speed seems to have dramatically improved.

I know your right Simon as my speeds have increased dramatically since removing Norton Firewall. I tried Sygate but whenever the sockets de Trois trojan attacked Sygate shut down and left me with no firewall. Zonealarm is blocking it OK but I just wish I could find a cure to stop it coming in every 2 mins. ???
-
I think you'll just have to wait until it gets bored, Lona. ::) I had a Phinneas Phucker trojan about 100 times yesterday!! :o

Hi All
I tried to mail Symantec without any success, but I have faxed
the UK wing of their company and am waiting for a reply.
When I receive the reply I will post the comments here.
Lona has changed her firewall programe, why does she have to.
I am paying Symantec a subscription for updates, I do not want
to download an update that will screw up my PC. At the moment
I have basic firewall protection and doubtfull virus protection.
My lastest PC magazine has free Panda virus and firewall software, do you have any views on this product?

I've heard Panda is ok, JK. My subscription is due in September so I'd rather just uninstall it and enjoy happy surfing with no aggrevations. :D

The sockets trojan is a false positive from Norton apparently -can't think why I don't like Norton/Symantec products
It uses the same sockets as the PnP service for 98,Me,XP.
More info here:

That's a very valid point, JK, and although I am a fan of Norton / Symentec generally, I think they should respond to this as a matter of urgency.
Did you re-install NAV to see if you got your subscriptions back?
The sockets trojan is a false positive from Norton apparently -can't think why I don't like Norton/Symantec products
Nobody's perfect. I'm sure the other brands have had their share of screw ups. ;)
However, I have to admit, having used the Firewall for some considerable time, I was reluctant to change, but the significant improvement in browsing speed since switching back to Sygate (my original favorite), has proved that NPF definitely slowed down browsing on my PC.
-
Problem I find with Norton is people never believe it can be faulty and so even when you've shown them the problem they still insist on using it :( It is also in such widespread use that it's one of the first targets for any trojan/virus.
I fixed a computer about 3 weeks ago where Norton was the culprit (a 100% processor loading problem). Installed Avast, did all the updates - got the system running very smoothly.
A week later I got a call saying it had all gone faulty again - he'd uninstalled Avast and put Norton back on "because it was better" :brick:
Others have their problems but I've not seen as many problems from them as I have from Norton infested machines. (Have a google search for "norton problem" and see how many you find).
The other thing that I believe causes problems is the fact that Norton was a well known target for the crack files (the fact that if you put your clock forward when you installed it meant your subscription lasted longer was also a widely known 'feature'). There are a lot of people out there with 'cracked' or 'tweaked' versions - which can lead to all sorts of other problems.
-

Point taken. (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.apax34.dsl.pipex.com%2Fsmileys%2Fblush.gif&hash=3dbc21ec73ac0f8617efe43e4e3ecfddcfc90f80) Top of the Google search is the problem Lona and JK have had. http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=11131

Are there? :not2:
-
As of this time I have received no reply from Symantec.
I will give them a chance but do not expect a reply.
They seam not to care a less that the software upgrade has caused
so many problems. Perhaps Norton should rename there companies updates as sockets de toris v1 central. Download the updates and lose your internet access.
-
Still no reply from Norton and do not expect one.
I have spoken to friends who use other products and they have
never heard, see or come across the Sokets de Trois v1 Trojan.
It appears to be just a Norton thing. With attacks at 40 to 50
an hour it now makes sence that they were not real attacks but
Norton software problems. problems which the company will not
admit to.
-
I'm surprised they haven't come back to you, JK. Maybe they are overwhelmed with complaints? Nevertheless, what I would suggest is to try another firewall for now, at least until Norton have sorted the problem out, which would hopefully be at the next Live Update. :-\
-
Hi All
No reply from Norton at all.
It,s not just the firewall that causes me problems. I have my
Norton automatic updates turned off. This is because if it's
left on it will again download the problem file. So I have no
virus updates for a couple of weeks now. This makes both my Norton products, firewall and anti virus out of date.
It's a file about redirection that causes the firewall problem.
I still have 6 months of my Norton update subscription left.
Been on the net looking out on forums for this problem. Seen a
so called experts and network adminstrators board with the same
internet accesss and Norton problem on it. Norton must know by now?
-
Hi JK,
Can you remind us which version of Norton you are using? If it's 2002, I believe they have now withdrawn support for that version, but they don't think to tell people that when they renew their subscriptions. :(
The problem, as you rightly say, is that without those vital Live Updates, you could be leaving yourself vulnerable. On the other side of the coin, if you are not doing the Live Updates, how would you know if there is now a fix to your problem? :-\
As I have suggested before, the subscriptions are for the Anti Virus definitions, yes? So, as the problem seems to be with the Firewall why not keep NAV, and just change the Firewall for something else, such as Sygate?
