I can connect but am disconnected after 2 mins. When I try to reconnect I get message no dialtone.
I have uninstalled modem and re-installed and can connect but same disconnection after 2mins with same message.
I have upgraded the driver but with same results.
If I reboot I can connect again but only for a couple of minutes.
Any suggestions????????

It's news to me that it even looks for a dial tone, Lona, but that doesn't mean to say it doesn't. If I were you, I might, however, just be inclined to check that I haven't inherited a rogue dialler from somewhere. Check your Network Connections folder, to make sure it's just Pipex in there, then check IE Tools > Internet Options > Connections, to make sure it's dialling Pipex. The only other thing I can think of to check is that your e-mail client isn't disconnecting after sending / receiving.

Did all that Simon. Checked out pipex site and it appears there has been a problem with connections. It is only affecting some but they are working on it.
It seems to be alright at the moment. :)

OK. They usually fix things pretty quickly, Lona. Mine is OK, so, as they said, the problem must be local.

Update on my connection problems.............
It has been getting steadily worse over the past week. After reading No6's post about ZA I decided to uninstall it and re-install norton. The problem was still there.
The error message is 645 and 680 when I try to re-connect. If I go into outlook express and click work offline wait a few seconds I can reconnect.
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing modem and also checked all my connections configs. Everything checks out OK and I have no conflicts in device manager.
I phoned Pipex today and after 30 minutes hanging on to speak to someone they said it could be Sky or my burgler alarm. Now I have had sky for years and no conflicts. I phoned my alarm company and they said they get these complaints all the time from BT and that it can't be the alarm as it's not activated while I am online. To prove that it's not the alarm the engineer is coming tomorrow to disconnect the telephone dialler feature to eliminate that from the problem.
The interesting thing the alarm company asked was is it happening more often during the day and I said it was and he said that's when most businesses use the service. In the evening it's not as often which makes me wonder if it is pipex after all and they are passing the buck.
I'm so confused now........
Is it Sky, is it the alarm, is it BT or is it Pipex.
I was up half the night last night trying to solve the problem but got nowhere.

Sorry Lona, I have no ideas. Pipex is fine here, so all I can say is that your problem must be local, either your BT line, or something to do with your PC. I don't quite buy the burglar alarm theory. Just a thought, have you had a lot of rain recently? Maybe some water has got into the BT line somehow? I know this used to affect dial ups, but not sure if it can affect BB in the same way.

You could have a point there Simon but my phone works ok, so you would think I would be having telephone problems.

The error message is 645 and 680 when I try to re-connect.
Had a quick Google, and Error 645 seems to be something to do with the encrypting of username / passwords settings (see here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q199/7/80.asp&NoWebContent=1)), and Error 680 means no dial tone. As you can obviously connect some times, I think I might suspect either the BT line, or a faulty modem, Lona, but I'm only guessing.

Thanks Simon, had already read that url earlier. I've checked and double checked my connections and still can't find out the problem. Perhaps when alarm engineer calls today he might have some answers.

sorry Lona I would love to help, but if I was having probs I'd get in touch with Tech Support, they get in touch with BT, and BT do a line check.
It's a process of elimination really, I assume it is a external ADSL modem, take it and your filters to a mates house and see if it connects their PC OK. You could even take your PC tower to their house, that way, you prove the filters the modem and your PC one way or the other. They all work then its you line, like I say a process of elimination. In an hour you could have tested all you kit, better than going around in circles for hours /days on end. :-*

Tony, I assume the person whose house I was taking modem to would have to be BB connected. None of my friends are on BB, in fact most of my friends are computer illiterates.;D
Pipex refused to contact BT until it was ruled out that it wasn't the alarm speech dialler that was cauing the problem.:(.
So the situation is that Pipex is blaming the alarm company, the alarm company is blaming BT and BT is blaming Pipex, which leaves me not knowing who's to blame.
I really have now come to the conclusion that it's usb related.
I have been cut off 3 times while trying to write this post.It really would try the patience of Joab.

Auto dialer on your alarm, I doubt it. I installed an auto dialer [infact I installed the whole alarm system] Infa Red, vibration and magnetic switching, the lot. For a kick off the auto dialer would only trigger if a alarm triggered. The one I fit was a auto dialer that auto rang up to five numbers with a recorded message, so I do not see the connection between that and your internet connection. I would think all remote monitored alarms would be set up to work on an analoge line connection. To be geared up otherwise would be commercial suicide, as ADSL is new not yet installed technology regards the vast majority on phone installations.
And all joking apart Lona, is times like these that going with a ISP that has first class support pays dividens.
Non of your neigbours got land line broadband Lona? you will have to start a Broadband club up your way.

Do you still have a dial up connection which you could try Lona? At least that would eliminate a faulty phone line as the same line is used for both until it gets to the filter.

Right ;D go onto the BT website you will have to log in.
New Users
Register with BT.com to access additional services including managing your BT account online and an extra 200 online number information searches a month
Then go to customer services/ report a fault / Report On fault on line. put your number in then follow prompts..wait 10 secs fill in the form. enter then wait another 10 secs or so, if there is a fault it will come up with a picture showing the exchange/bt's network your house and it will if there is a fault pinpoint it to within 3mts of the fault :o
Hope this helps or anybody else that wants to check their line 8)

Lona, don't be insulted by my question, I have to ask as I found a similar fault at work today...
Is the alarm thingy plugged into the telephone line directly or via your ADSL splitter?
One of our sattellite offices had been complaining for ages that their Internet connection was slow and their router often crashed. I checked the software and the hardware but couldn't find a fault. But the router continued to crash and the net was very slow. Then I noticed that someone had installed a panic alram and instead of plugging it into the ADSL splitter, ther had installed a normal phone line splitter and plugged the alarm into one side and the ADSL splitter into the other!
Needless to say, the ADSL splitter is now stuck firmly into the BT wall box with duck tape :heehee:

Thanks for that BT.com advice Hook. I've already registered with them but didn't realise you could perform a line test through it. The directory services function is excellent and I've used it several times.

I never knew that either regards line checking via the BT website. I've been a member since I had their MidBand service. Mind you as per usual, the BT website is not working properly....but they know about it, but they don't say when it will be fixed. It was acting up the other week, when I was trying to alter some account details....I had to phone a nice man in India....oh deary me.

I know what your saying about alarms. My alarm is hard wired directly into socket and as the guy said they are not allowed to put them into a splitter incase they get knocked out accidently. I got the alarm company to come and disconnect the speechdialler from the box but I am still getting disconnected at random, although tonight it has been fine. It seems to be worse during the day.
Simon, I did re-install modem to different usb socket but it made no difference. I have written to pipex again to ask them to contact BT so will just have to wait for the outcome.
