I found that with my router firewall, Zone Alarm became more of a nuisance than anything else as it prevented me from accessing any Yahoo site.  I now just use the router and XP firewall.  Is the SP2 firewall different to the standard XP?

As far as I know Clive, SP2 firewall is a lot stronger than the normal XP.. hopefully one of the techies will back up what I'm saying  ;)

The Windows Firewall is much better than its Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) predecessor, but still no match for a 3rd-party personal firewall solution such as ZoneAlarm

First of all, the Windows Firewall does not monitor or block outbound traffic.

According to the PCWorld article Overton pointed out that if malicious code gets past the firewall it is the role of antivirus software to handle it.

The Windows Firewall also relies on API's which can be disabled.

Having a firewall is a bit of a belt and braces approach when you have a router with a NAT Hooky.
I still have nortons firewall on but its never shown any attempt of anything to get in during the last 18 months or more that I have had my router.
It wont do any harm to have a firewall on but probably not do any good either  :)

Did you get the Netgear router in the end Hook?

If so, you have a brilliant stateful packet inspection firewall built-in and, if it is configured properly, you will not need a software firewall.

Time to RTFM I think :)

Yes got the Netgear modem/router and apart from the ISP giving me a wrong Address was very easy to set up.

On line wizzard was most helpful  :)

Thanks for giving me more confidence on not having a software firewall  ;)

RTFM???
