Title: ADSL Router
Post by: petski2 on December 18, 2004, 10:00
Hi all great forum.
Heres my problem.
I recently bought a Mentor wireless adsl modem/router.
To say the least the instruction manual is pants.
All I want to do at the moment is to use the router in place of my old adsl modem.
This is how I have gone about it.
Connected router to wall socket adsl line.
Connected it to pc by ethernet cable.
Got into config page of router 10.0.0.2
Does anyone know what all the settings should be set to as I have tried allsorts.
Here is my ipconfig.
As you may see at the moment I am using the old modem as the router wont connect to internet.

Hi Pete, and  (https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.apax34.dsl.pipex.com%2Fsmileys%2Fwelcome.gif&hash=05644ab4fbfa7c9585f756e9a79aab0a53d0e346)

I'm afraid I don't know anything about configuring routers, but we do have people that do, so hopefully someone will be able to help you later.  In the meantime, if you are having problems connecting to the Internet, could this be a firewall problem?  Most routers have an onboard firewall, and this could be conflicting with any software firewalls you also may have running.  I think most people would suggest using the router firewall in preference to the Windows firewall (XP-SP2), or any third party software firewall.

Hope that helps a bit.   :)

Routers are usually the simplest things to set up Pete. I dont know your particular model but if it has a reset to factory settings button, press that and start afresh.
All you should have to do is to access the router through its IP of 10.0.0.2 as you have done, go into the WAN configuration part and put your ISPs username and password in, usually you have to tell it to save the settings and reboot the router. That should be all that is required.
If it doesnt connect after doing that then shut down the pc and turn the router off and then turn the router and pc back on and it should assign the correct IP to your PC.
Hope this sorts it for you but if it doesnt let me know if there are any lights on the router that are flashing or on or off  :)

Ok Sandra first thanks for reply.
Done all ya said and still no joy.
All that happens when I click on internet explorer is it asks me to connect using my speedtouch connection which is the only option.

Do you have any lights on the router ?
Have you looked in the Network Connections folder ?
There should be an icon for the modem and also one for the LAN.
Have a look in the properties for the LAN and see what it says and also untick the internet connection firewall under Advanced for now  :)

Just a thought, is your ethernet adaptor showing as ok in Device Manager ?
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: petski2 on December 18, 2004, 12:55
Power light on.
Wlan light flashing.
Adsl light flashing.
TP1 light flashing.
Network connections shows Speedtouch connection and LAN connection.
Wireless router/modem is Mentor with apparently conexant chip?

Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: petski2 on December 18, 2004, 12:58
Sorry, yes ethernet is showing as working properly and enabled.
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 18, 2004, 13:34
A lot of the routers use conexant chips.
Silly me, of course your ethernet adaptor was ok as you can access the router through its IP addy, just shows I shouldnt post so soon after getting up  :-[

Ok in the LAN properties did it show your IP as being in the range of what the router should be assigning ie 10.0.0.xx ?
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: petski2 on December 18, 2004, 13:37
Lan shows IP address as 10.0.0.8 and default Gateway as 10.0.0.2 and subnet mask as 255.0.0.0

Ok so its assigning the correct IP so there cant be much wrong.
Is it this model of router :

Title: Re:ADSL Router

For some reason connection has gone really slow.
Anyway I got to the link and yes it is that one.
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 18, 2004, 14:09
Strange, it is for me ?

Can you see this picture of it ?

(https://www.pc-pals.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.planetmicro.co.uk%2Fupload%2Fproduct_images%2F100%2FM002580.jpg&hash=5245ffe9a03b031170a60522a7f1c519c2cad921)

Also if you open IE when the router is connected and your modem isnt, go to TOOLS, OPTIONS and tell it to never dial a connection, it will detect that you have a modem and want to dial that instead of using the router to get online.
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 18, 2004, 14:22
Oh in that case we should be in luck as its the same as mine and Adepts but by a different name  :)

All you should have to do is in the WAN configuration part is to set the Encapsulation to PPPoA VC-Mux put your ISPs username and password in the PPP part then Submit and then save settings and reboot  ???
Switch both the router and pc off and then restart them both and you should be online  :)

Edited to add:

In the same section, in the Per VC Settings set Enabled to YES, VPI to 0 and VCI to 38 if its not already set to that, it should fill the rest in itself.

This may be a better manual than the one that came with the router :

http://www.aceex.com.tw/test1/support.htm

Go down to the wirelss series and get the one for the AWR51, thats my model which I assume is yours rebranded  :)
Title: Re:ADSL Router

Tried all that Sandra and still just the same.
I click on ie and the only page I can get on the browser is the config screen for the router.
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: petski2 on December 18, 2004, 15:14
Just a thought but should I have got some software with the router as in drivers or whatever.
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 18, 2004, 15:19
Did you definately set the router to factory settings by pressing the button on the router not just the reset inside the configuration bit of setup ?

If its any comsolation, it took me a couple of days to set mine up and I even had someone on line helping me and another friend came round and we couldnt sort it out.
Just before I went to bed that night I reset it to factory defaults entered the details as I posted earlier, still didnt work so I switched everything off and went to bed.
The following morning I decided to see if it would connect before I went back to the modem and it worked perfectly ever since  ???
It seems that although I had saved the router settings and rebooted it many times it juss needed the pc to be off as well as the router and when they were switched on together it sorted itself out  :)

I suppose theres always the possibilty that you have got a faulty router  ???
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 18, 2004, 15:24
No routers dont usually need drivers or software, unless theres an additional feature on it like a print server.
You can sometimes get software to update the firmware but that shouldnt be necessary at this stage.  :)

Post by: petski2 on December 18, 2004, 15:50
Ok sorry to be a nuisance Sandra but I will just go thru everything I have done form opening the box and see if I missed owt.
Unplug speedtouch modem.
Plug router into power socket.
Plug adsl cable from wall socket to adsl slot.
Run ethernet cable from router to pc.
Opened page 10.0.0.2
Entered user name and password.
Saved and rebooted both router and pc.
All that happens is the pc tries to connect thru speedtouch.
Should I have done anything with windows at all.
I wont bother you again then. Thanks for your time.

This might be a bit basic, but have you set the router as your default connection in Internet Properties > Connections?
Title: Re:ADSL Router

It doesnt show in internet connections Simon.
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 18, 2004, 16:26
In IE set it to never dial a connection in Tools/Internet Options.
make sure that on the speedtouch modem it doesnt have anything like always connect using this device ticked.

Everything else is all you should have to do.
Dont worry about keeping posting as someone else may have the answer but I cant see whats stopping it as long as its set to the PPPoA thing and 0 and 38 and has the correct username and password in.

Have you tried sending and receiving mail or using something like msn messenger in case its connecting ok and its just an IE problem that we need to be sorting out  ???

If you look on the Status page of the router and select LAN then the first figure should show the IP of the router ie 10.0.0.2 and below that there should be another box showing the number of Ethernet Devices connected and the IP addresses of each one, I assume that you only have a single pc connected at the moment so it should just show one device with the IP of 10.0.0.8, the same as in the LAN properties on your pc.

In the Tools/Options/Connections it should say use the same connection as IE and if you had ticked the never dial a connection in the IE Tools/Options/Connections it shouldnt be wanting to use the modem at all.
In the same settings have you gone into the LAN settings and ticked automatically detect settings ?
It shouldnt need to be ticked but it may help  :(

Ok we have found the problem  :)

Now we just need to find the solution  :(

You should have the pc you are using showing as connected to the DHCP server as 1 and below that its IP address.
I will have a read through the manual and see if I can suss out why its not showing it.
It may take me a bit to find the answer but I am confident that we will be able to  :)

Ok under LAN configuration can you check and confirm the following please :

DHCP server box ticked

DHCP address pool selection, System Allocated is ticked.

DHCP gateway selection, set to Automatic

Lease Time 1 day

Then if you click on Ethernet Mode settings :

Ethernet Mode: set to Auto Sense.

Yeah all those ok.I have just changed the user defined start address to 10.0.0.8 in lan and it now shows as ethernet device connected.Alas its made no difference.

LAN
IP Address Subnet Mask MAC Address

Did you reboot both the router and the pc after making the changes ?
Did you set the IE connection to never dial a connection, you never asnwered that part from earlier posts ?

Have you tried running the Diagnostic Test in the router, its almost at the bottom under Admin Privilege ?

That may give some indication as to which part its failing on  :)

Thats not much help then  :(
Theres a miscellaneous section that allows you to put your WAN IP address in, it shouldnt be necessary but as we are struggling it may be worth trying that, have you got a static or at least a sticky dynamic WAN IP that you know of ?
If its a true dynamic one that changes at each connection then it wont be much help but if it is sticky or static at least we should get a connection that way.
Title: Re:ADSL Router

wanadoo says it doesnt offer a static ip address as it is assigned by dhcp apparently
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 18, 2004, 17:48

On home page of router config it shows nothing for wan.

Ok so that would be why it fails the diagnostic test on the ADSL part.

In your PPP configuration and then the PPP Account Configuration have you got an account name set up ?

Mine has 1  Account name :  simple ppp account 0
Then Username : the one from my ISP

Yep mines exactly the same
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 18, 2004, 17:51
According to the IP showing on your posts they have all been the same so its probably like mine and is a "Sticky Dynamic" one  :)

Wanadoo doesnt have some weird restriction on using none supplied equipment or some ban on routers do they  ???
I dont know how theyd know if you were using a router or not though  :(
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 18, 2004, 17:56
Under Status and PPP have you got an * as it says here :

If a * appears under Mode column, you need to check the WAN configuration to make sure the VC has the correct encapsulation.

I am just wondering if Wanadoo use a different form, maybe PPPoA LLC.
Have they got a help line thats not extortionate and available at weekends ?

It has to be something really simple that we are missing but I cant think what  :(
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: petski2 on December 19, 2004, 13:18
May sound silly but when I plug adsl cable into speedtouch modem its fine yet when I plug it into the router the adsl light flashes is this normal.
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 19, 2004, 13:30
What you should get is the power light on steady the WLAN on steady and for a few seconds the ADSL will flash and so should the RXD light.
Then when the connection is established the ADSL light should be steady to show that its connected and the RXD light should flash a couple of times a second as it sends info back and forth but if you are downloading or uploading it will flash faster.
That should happen whether the pc is on or off and ethernet cable connected or not.
When the ethernet cable is connected and the pc is on then you should have another 3 lights, Link/Act steady if not sending/receiving data flashing if its doing so, 100 steady and Full/Col steady  :)
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 19, 2004, 13:35
I just noticed that your IP has changed today from yesterday so you dont have a "Sticky Dynamic" one  :(
I wonder if thats part of the problem, I dont think it should be but it means that we cant try what I suggested yesterday and enter it under the miscellaneous config part  :(
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: petski2 on December 19, 2004, 14:25
The adsl light flashes constantly, could this mean a faulty adsl port on the router as the same cable works in the speedtouch
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: petski2 on December 19, 2004, 14:37
And the wlan light is flashing constantly
Title: Re:ADSL Router
Post by: Sandra on December 19, 2004, 14:54
The reason the ADSL light is constantly flashing is that its trying to make the connection, once its established one it would become steady.
The WLAN shouldnt be flashing unless you are using a wireless connection.
Have you been able to check which encapsulation Wanadoo uses yet, is there the * in the PPP Status under the Mode ?

This is a different model of router but it has the same chipset and HTTP user interface and settings as mine and Petes has :

Pete, when you reset the router to factory defaults did you use the link from inside the webpage or do it manually from the reset button ?
I think the button works better but it does have to be held in for about 30 seconds I think  :)

Tried it both ways Sandra.
This may sound silly but it is my normal username and password that I use for wanadoo that I enter on the wan screen isnt it.

As I can reach the 10.0.0.2 page with or without the router plugged into adsl which is the best option.

Also on the wan page should it have a static ip address as it has one in which is 192.168.241.101
Also again lol on the nat page I have "Number of nat configurations = 0"

Your username and password should be the one supplied by wanadoo and the same as you usually connect with via your modem, I would always choose a manual reset over a software one, when you do reset it go into the 10.0.0.2 page and see if it has actually changed anything to make sure that it has actually reset it.

I have just come across this while looking for solutions to your problem :

You need to find outy how to register with your ISP.  First I would unplug the power to both the modem and the router, leave them sit for a minute or two and then plug them back in one by one starting with the modem.  If the router still obtains a 0.0.0.0 address let us know.

<<<an ping all the pc's and open shared folders etc. and ping the bt server on 194.72.9.34 but cannot get to the internet.>>>
This is normal issue for ISPs who require equipment to be registered to get an IP it is referred to as a walled garden.  It allows registered devices in but blocks internet access to restrictde, unregistered devices.  First find out how to register from BT if you are not automatically taken there.

I have heard of cable ISPs needing to have equipment registered before but not ADSL ones. It may be worth giving wanadoo a call t osee if this is the problem as the IP should be automatically provided to your router as soon as the ADSL link makes the connection.
Has anyone else come across the need to do this on ADSL  ???

My static IP in the WAN page is the same as yours, its just a standard IP assigned for routers I think and bears no relationship to your actual IP.
Also my NAT configurations are set to 0 too.
I am beginning to think that it needs to be registered with wanadoo to be able to have an IP assigned to it  :(

Another silly sounding question.
As its a wireless adsl router will it operate as simply a adsl modem or does it need another computer to communicate with.

No it works fine just with one pc.
Its just handier as theyre usually easier to get connected than a USB modem and have the advantage of always being on regardless of whether the pc is even switched on or not.
If you have more pcs then they make connecting those to the net easier too  :)

When I upgraded from dial-up to ADSL, BTInternet had kindly changed my user ID without informing me.  What they did was to add a letter and number to my username, but obviously I was unable to connect until I phoned BT to find out why I had a problem.  I think it may be worth contacting Wanadoo to see if they have done something similar.

Glad that it was a faulty router after all as I couldnt understand why it wasnt setting itself up  :)

There should be a slot, usually covered by a spring loaded flap at one or both sides of your laptop. I have never seen a laptop newer than a P1 that hasnt got one. Just push it in and it should lock in place and to remove it there will either be a lever or a button to release the lock  :)

Ok, if your main pc and laptop are both on XP just open the network connections folder and run the network connection wizard from the Setup a Home or Small Office network.
This will make a shared folder on both pcs, right click on it or any other folder that you want to share and tick the Make this folder available to other users on my network and also the box Allow other network users to alter my files.
Then you just open network places on the pc that you want to copy files to and provided the folder is set to be shared on the other pc and has the correct permissions set for the files you want to copy, browse for the folder and drag them across.
She will only be able to see your emails if you set your email account up on the laptop. If you did that then whichever pc downloaded the mail first would have it. The best way would be just to have your mail account on your pc and set a different one up on the laptop for her to use  :)
